Nice video. In agree that the AF is sending. LOT of info fast and sending tons of input changes to the motors of the lens and the 3rd party just doesn't know what to do with it.
I've been amazed in testing the ability of the R6MKII tagging super small birds in flight. Wish it had more MP :(

I have used the Sigma 150 - 600 since it came out and LOVE IT!! The reason I have not and probably will not switch to Canon Mirrorless are the issues with the combination. I have gone to buy the R7, R6 & R5 but non have worked right with the Sigma. Just heard that Sigma states that "The 150 - 600 will not work reliably with the Canon mirrorless system and at this time we do not have a replacement 150 - 600 for the mirrorless in the works" I hope this changes but the 5D mkIV's will not be going anyplace for a while.

My photo buddy and I use that lens. Sigma 150-600. It is a great value. I have a Nikon Z 7 ll . My photo buddy has the Canon R 6. Like you we got some fine pictures. But sometimes the phocusing is a really bad. The cameras hunt sometimes. But my main complaint. Is it weight. It is a beast. I love that lens. A great video. Thanks a lot.

I find that the bigger the lens, the More battery juice is required... I've shot with my D70 using the single battery it came with and the 150-600mm....found it wasn't powerful enough to "snap" the focus using the same lens as you're using.
I then purchased a battery pack that fits on the bottom of the camera like that on old film winder. By doing this, I found the camera was able to drive the 150-600 just like it was a kit lens.

I'm not a pro so I am probably going to go the R7. I already have the Sigma lens which I use on my 7D and 5D but I'm purchasing the Tamron 18 - 400mm for the 7D as my Tamron 18-200mm has died and I miss the focal range. So it will be interesting to see how that goes on the R7 when I purchase it. It'll give me over 600mm focal length. Good exercise I think. Thank you once again for a interesting video. I loved the cocky shot with the orange clouds.

I guess any sigma 150-600C owner has problems with autofocus on canon mirrorless. I would even guess canon is doing this on purpose on the R6 Mk2 so the users finally get overpriced Canon RF glass.
I tested before i got a usable Sigma 150-600C 4 different ones (most were not sharp at all, especially in some corners), every 150-600 i tested had AF issues on canon mirrorless, tested on RP, R6 and R7. I am pretty fine with it, i use AF-S and refocus/reframe every few shots, only on the canon lenses im really working 99% with AF-C.
Great place to live right now in australia, all the (few) interesting birds we have in middle europe are more or less in australia and the south now and its climate is much more acceptable. Here with -5°C to +5°C, its just annoying to go out at all with the camera, instead just chilling at the fireplace.

I do not really understand, why you blame the lens. It looks to me like the camera would analyze the picture and command the lens to adjust to a certain object. I understand that this may be less of a problem with other lenses but in general it looks like a camera problem or like a camera manufacturer trying to impact the competition.

Flogging a dead horse here. Did anyone think R6II would make the problems go away? Alas Canon a closed shop, buy the ludicrously expensive 100-500L or very slow 100-400 f/8. Canon could stop all these problems and release a 150-600 f/5-6.3 of their own if they won't allow third party AF lenses.

I have been using the R6II with this lens for a week or so now. Overall I feel it does slightly better than the R7 but still not ideal. My pulsing was not as bad as you what you experienced. I was using all standard af setting and the factory firmware on the lens. When it does hit, the images are great like you mentioned. Hi Duade. Another great video, thank you very much. The sooner Canon open up the RF lens mount to the Sigma and Tamrons of this world the better. Sony and now Nikon have opened up their lens mounts and if Canon don't do the same before too long they are going to start losing customers. If they did open up the RF mount it may even be possible for Sigma etc to do some sort of firmware update to their EF mount lenses to overcome the autofocus problems. We can only hope. Some brilliant images in the video even with the frustrating autofocus. Thanks again. John

In the meantime, I have found that the 90D works much better with the Sigma 150-600 than the R7, since the AF pumps less and the images are almost always sharp. Also, the IS seems to work better with the 90D because the image shakes less. So I guess I'll have to keep the 90D.

Duade - what if Canon is using the AF AI in the camera to detect that there's a 3rd party EF lens attached to the EF to RF adaptor and then sending false signals to the Sigma lens to ensure that it doesn't work properly, thus tempting consumers to ONLY use Canon glass (more $$$ for Canon). Yes, this is a serious allegation on my part. Hopefully people start reverse engineering the AI inside the camera to find out.
On a positive, took my new 500mm out for the first in the field usage and boy am I blown away by how sharp it is. Night and day difference to my previous lens setup.

Canons incentive to fix it is that people are going to move entirely away from canon systems to another brand which doesn't restrict third party lenses, I've used canon my entire life but am seriously considering switching to Sony because of this very issue. None of my third party EF lenses work as they should on my R6 Mk1 and I simply can't afford the RF lenses.

Same here mate! Canon 50D>5Dmki>mkiii>mkiv>r6… several canon L lenses, but I had one sigma (35mm) that I loved. To not give the option for third party lens on the rf mount means I’ll be switching systems in the future and I won’t look back.

Hi John, two very different cameras, one is a FF professional body. The 1DX is far superior in almost every way. The advantage of the T8i is video, a 24mp crop sensor will make the subject bigger than the 18mp FF body and it is much lighter. But the 1DX is a pro level body with incredible build quality, 10fps, good buffer, great AF and is a joy to use. The shutter is very loud and it is very heavy so be aware of that. I personally would go with the 1dx. Cheers, Duade

I would like to give a feedback about the in-and-out-of-focus issue you detected in your video with the R6M2. I'm actually evaluating wether should I buy a R5 or a R6M2? This is actually the "only real problem" I have to solve im my life ;-). Anyways I allready own a RP together with a Sigma 150-600 C and with this camera I have no issues with this lense in regard of keeping the focus. Except that the Eye tracking is not designed for animals. But with "any kind" of human's, per example, Sport like rowers I have NO issue with this combo.
During the last few weeks I had 2 times the chance to lend a EOS R5 from a friend to use my Sigma with it. And again I can say there whas, comparing to yours detected in your video, no issue about finding or keeping the focus. It whas not Birding, I whas out with our Team joining some Rowing races in Switzerland and North Italy and beside these I caught a few birds too.

I’m curious why so many think Canon should allow 3rd party lenses to be developed for their mirror less cameras. If I owned canon I wouldn’t either. What’s in it for them? I would imagine most people buy one camera and then multiple lenses, so it would seem most of the profit would be in the lenses. Photography isn’t a poor man’s hobby. Good glass cost money. I have owned both 3rd party and factory lenses when I was shooting Nikon, there was no comparison. I would rather wait a little longer and save for a lens I know will give me the results I want then buy something that will frustrate me when I really need it to perform. I presently shoot both the Canon r6 & r7 cameras with the 100-500 rf lens.
I use them primarily for wildlife and b.i.f. Photography, I couldn’t be happier with the results!

Thanks, yes, you make good points and I can see why Canon are holding out on the the third party licence. I guess the frustration is the Sigma 150-600C works perfectly on EF bodies and for its price delivers unbeatable value, people just want the same for the RF system which I also can understand. Here in Australia the RF100-500 retails for $4,800 AUD whilst the Sigma is $1499 AUD, a very big difference. Cheers, Duade

@@noabassrodriguez8170 not sure what a "eos 77d" is. I have two Canon 7D Mk 2s, one of which has the Sigma Contemporary 150-600mm on it permanently. It's a very, very fine combination. The issue with Duade's situation may be an incompatibility betw. the Canon's new mirrorless "R" cameras and the Sigma lens, which was developed for dSLR cameras.
This issue is very important to me. Since I own the Sigma lens I'd, of course, like to use it with the R6 Mk 2 . But this autofocus problem is a serious issue! Plan B for me, if I just had to have the R6 would be to come up with the cash to buy the Canon RF 100-500mm lens. The compatibility betw. the R6 Mk2 and that lens would be non-existent, naturally. In fact the auto-focus eye thing is fantastic with that camera and that lens.
Noah, another idea here is: if I was *forced* to get the RF 100-500mm lens, I'd be 'short" 100mm on the far end. To compensate, I could get a 1.4x teleconverter. My understanding is that these new Canon R cameras are so good that the usual problem with teleconverters and zoom lenses would not arise. Teleconverter down-sides may be limited to dSLRs. A 1.4x teleconverter would increase my maximum focal length to 700mm! Woo-hoo! ❤❤❤

Brent hall said hes not in crop mode but he seemed to think I was being rude for asking this. If the focus box is bigger it makes the rf 800 and 600 alot more useable . If this is the case could this not be rolled out to the R6 and R5 via firmware ???

Yes, the R62 gets 80x80% AF coverage with the F11 lenses compared to the 40x60% of the R6/R5. I show this in my R62 review video. The R3 is the same so I suspect it has something to do with the faster sensor readout speed and updated AF of the cameras. I would love for them to do the same on the R5/R6 but I believe that is unlikely, it would be good to hear from Canon about that. I suspect they will say there are hardware differences between the cameras that allow it. Cheers, Duade

If you could afford a 4000$ body, you better also invest in good glass. The RF 100-400 is close to a shame on a R5.
If the 100-400 is really too short, why not getting a RF 800 F11 in addition or just go for the expensive 100-500, thats the best fit for the R5 as much it hurts financially? I enjoyed the RF 800 a lot on full frame, not so much anymore on APS-C (R7, too much reach with 1280mm...)
But the RF 800 is also another "low quality/budget" lens, i dont see much sense in getting a high end body and then use the lower end lenses on it. And even im doing this mistake, R7 is a higher end APS-C camera and i use more or less glass worth between 50 and 900$ (more towards the lower end^^)
In your situation i would rather hope for a R7 Mk2 or so as 2nd/wildlife/video body, i began wildlife also with full frame and wildlife was the reason to switch back/downgrade from entry level FF to higher end APS-C again. At first i kept the FF camera, then i realized a backup is nice but i dont really need it, as well i didnt had much practical use for the entry level FF camera anymore but much more for the more modern APS-C.

I was hoping that this focus pulsing would be fixed or atleast made better, but here we are 1 year later and its still horrible. I have been using the 150-600C with my R50, which is a decent enough camera for good images when the lens focuses correctly

Have major issue just like yours. Borrowed friend's camera and I seem to have same experience. ANY feedback from Sigma? Using Sony A7R3, Sony A1 and 6400, I have no issue with the native Sony FE 4/24-105 G OSS lens but have blooming with the Sigma. Wanted to thank you once again for your honest video's. Wasn't sure if it was my camera I should toss or the glass. Based on your videos and others, I truly think there is a sync lag between the lens and the camera. I truly hope Sigma listens to consumers like me who don't trade often and stay pretty loyal to brands. :(
Thank you so much also for adding your equipment information!

This video are a year old, but both Tamron and Sigma had problems with AF in Canon cameras. I have a Tamron SP 150-600 G2, and it sometimes fly out and in of focus. But they are a long way from being as bad as the old series of Sigma lenses used on Canons DSLR. They always were out of focus, and I own 5 different lenses. Even one of the newer lenses with the docking station was a mess. So, no more Sigma lenses for me.

You are using back button focus, aren't you? The whole idea of back button focus is that you only engage the AF when necessary. You're on a tripod and the bird isn't moving about, so once you've acquired sharp focus, can't you just get your finger off the back button and be happy?

    • @Duade
      @Duade  Год назад +1

G'day Lau, they beauty of eye tracking is you simply hold down the AF On and it sticks to the birds and tracks even minor movements. I am also not confident that critical focus has been achieved when first acquiring focus so I would hate to let go of the AF and take a burst only to find out initial focus was off. If you have a stationary bird for long periods it is much easier but with fast moving subjects we often just don't have time. The fact the camera works so well with RF lenses just makes me wish it did the same with the Sigma. Cheers, Duade 👍

I guess Canon doesn't want their R6 or R5 to cooperate with Sigma or Tamron lenses as they released their RF 600 and 800 mm lenses. I still don't know if I'd buy the Sigma 150-600 or the Canon RF800. Price is nearly the same

Hey, I know about the pulsing but I also have it that in servo it micro focuses continuously. I’m shooting on the r and have the same with with the sigma 70-200 sport. It makes a clicking noise wich also happened on my r10 and I’ve heard others to have the same thing. It’s not the extreme pulsing mentioned here. The canon 24-105 f4 mark one has it too, original canon adapter. Any thoughts? Thanks and awesome video!

Greetings Duade, I want to change my Canon RP body but stay with my Sigma 150-600C for the moment because I want something more intelligent with bird tracking in the AF. From what I see, the sigma 150 -600mm has flickering problems in AF. I have seen all your videos of the R7 and I am afraid to invest my money there. Today I said I'm going for something more Professional and I see that it also has a problem with the Canon R6. I think it's easier to ask you with which body that 150-600 lens you had less problem buying it so that later I can change the lens to a native Canon one. I have even considered switching to a Sony look A6700 with a 200-600 lens. I will take notes of your comments and thank you for your videos.

Tom, great to hear, I only really had it badly on the R5 when up close to the subject using AI Servo Eye tracking. It is noticeably worse on the R62 for some reason. Great to hear you are enjoying the lens on your R5. If you read the comments you will see many people experience the same issue so it appears to impact some lenses more than others. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade I wonder if it could be related to calibration inconsistencies in the 150-600mm Sigma lenses or perhaps lag in the lens response to rapid instruction changes issued by the Canon R5/6 cameras. It would be interesting for you to interview a lens manufacturer to understand how the focusing communication systems work.

Hi Cássio with moving wildlife we really need continuous focus tracking and not single shot. You are correct if we shoot in single shot and acquire focus we can release focus and take the shot. This only really works with stationary subjects but is an option, just not for my style. Cheers, Duade

Thanks for pointing this issue out to us all. I am new to bird photography and have had little use with this lens as yet. However I went out today in the garden to practice it just would not lock on and constantly searched the branches and not the bird. Most frustrating and I thought it was me. I then realised that it was my first time out with this combo, as when I first used it I was still using an EOS R and it worked OK. I don' think I will be trying to learn this type of photography with this lens...most disappointing.
