It's sad but accurate. When a child accepts someone as mother even if they are abusive or dangrouse it's unlikely they abandon them on their own choice.

The ending scene, especially when Lily's laughing and touching Mama's face while they embrace during the fall, always broke me everytime. It goes to show how much Lily loves Mama, no matter what she is.
Lily didnt understand what was going on, other than the fact that she's happy because she is with Mama. But to us, the audience, we know what will happen, and for me that is heart-breaking...
Still, I agree with the director that that is the only ending they could think of that fit their vision of the story. Who am I to say otherwise...
Now, I just need to ease this emotional roller coaster from watching the movie...

      Fair enough
I do believe in the beginning of the movie, the father had ordered his daughter to take off Her glasses so she couldn’t see him kill her clearly.

It's actually pretty easy to understand why horror movies revolving around children scare us so much; when most of us humans encounter children, our first instinct is to protect and nurture them; if we encounter something that threatens a child's safety, our instinct is to protect them at all costs; if said threat is something that we do not understand, we begin to feel helpless and desperate to protect the child; and when we find ourselves in a situation where the child IS the threat, we become torn between our own survival and the child's.

And the juxtaposition of Lily vs. Victoria as a result of their bonding experiences as young children made this film a real winner for me. And even though Jessica Chastain wasn't well known when she did this film, I had seen her in many things before this so I really loved seeing her play this type of character in contrast to the roles I've seen her in before...she really shows promise as she has a great range. Remember her in "The Help"? Now that's two very different characters that were both equally convincing. Thanks...I enjoyed this video and subscribed as a result!

My entomologist father would scorn me for not pointing out that the black butterflies you mention as the sign of Mama are actually moths. I just don’t understand why mama wasn’t satisfied with her own baby when she was finally reunited? Why kill Lily too? That ending still has me messed up. I cry every single time. But I am a mother of three girls. And of course one of their names is Lilly.

I was looking for new Horror Movies to watch and found this (and other Movies i have to watch now thanks to this channel, which got a Sub now). I stopped the Video after the first 20 Seconds and started checking out the Movie. After seeing that Guillermo Del Toro worked on it, i knew this is gonna be a good one.
    I was not dissapointed.

Hey Niyat, Don't know if you'll see this or not but here goes nothing. Your channel has always astonished me, the way that you go in depth, and don't skip even small details is amazing. You sparked my curiosity not only about films and comics, but life in general. You're one of my biggest inspirations, and you made me take the jump to choose my career, Audio designing and composing. I am happy to say that me and my wife have agreed to name our son "Niyat" after you. I wish you the best my friend. :)

When I watched Doctor Strange 2, weirdly enough it was kind of like Mama. A mother that was separated from “her” children and wanted them back, so she did whatever horrifying things it took to get them.

MAMA was an outstanding movie. Superb acting by the leads and the children. Mama was terrifying but you also begin to sympathize with her and by the end you can completely understand her attachment to the children. But being robbed and harmed as she was when she was alive has caused her to be filled with anger, jealousy and hate. Its a totally underrated horror movie.

At the time I saw this film, I was pretty immature in the way I perceived movies. I often forget this movie exists, but I recall thinking Mama herself was creepy in all my favorite ways (body horror and fast crawling scares me more than anything in horror movies) but underutilized, and that the plot wasn't all that interesting. Chances are I went into this one expecting a bombardment of visual scares, which I've come to learn, with much help from the Babadook, (another one which initially left me cold for the same reasons) is a bad way to go into a horror movie.
I imagine if I saw Mama now I would feel very differently, and would better appreciate the effort put into it. I certainly feel differently about the Babadook now than I did upon first viewing. (Your video on that one was wonderful, btw.)
Anyway, great the video, man. Made me reflect on how I've matured. Feels good.

Guillermo Del Toro should've been chosen to direct that H.P lovecraft movie in the works. I think he has a particular vision that compliments the material lovecraft wrote. What's your opinion on the lack of decent lovecraftian based media. Except for certain video games like call of cthulu or the sinking city

    • @reggieraccoon6447

I think most companies decide not to because H. P. Lovecraft became a raving racist and no one wants to deal with that drama bullshit about how their "sympathetic for a racist" .

Lovecraft doesn't work that well in popular media, in my opinion. Lovecraft is slow and subtle. Not that suitable for the big screen. Better for more artsy type films, I would say.
