    When the party's over, was my first experience of Billie's music. I had no idea of the rabbit hole I'd stumbled into. Try not to get bogged down in the interpretation of her deeper meanings. Everyone takes away their own piece of understanding. listen to her a few times and your understanding will change, listen a few more and change again. Don't look for comfortable and relaxed with Billie, expect uncertainty. Keep up the good work my friend and keep delving into the rabbit hole. You'll be glad that you did.

      @@ThomasJ_Music Billie herself has said she writes from the perspective of being someone else, outside herself. She writes from the perspective of things she's read or heard about & she herself has said she wants her music to have it's own meaning for each individual person. She writes in general on purpose for a reason & it's brilliant. She also writes almost all her music with her older brother Phineas. So take that into consideration as well.

    She’s also mentioned in an interview once that this can be considered a part two to her song party favor, that’s part of her EP don’t smile at me. party favor is a break up song. As many have said, this can be considered her being in a toxic relationship that just consumes her to the point she can’t keep it all in.

    If it makes you feel any better, I cried when I first watched this video. I could only catch about half of the lyrics, but her acting, her vocals, the setting all affected me deeply anyway. She has a grasp on emotional communication that very few people have ever possessed. I love her mind. Billie and Finneas recorded nearly all of her hit songs in a 9" by 9' bedroom in their parent's house. She is such a perfectionist that she has been known to record the first word of a song over 1000 times until she feels that it is exactly right.

    My 13 yr old daughter introduced me to Billie Eilish. She is in middle school which is a very awkward phase of life. Choosing to walk your own path instead of just fitting into a stereotype for fake acceptance is especially tough at that age. Let's be honest, kids in middle school are huge a**holes. What my daughter said is that she can actually identify with Billie and feel understood. Realistically, I think a lot of girls identify with Billie more than say Ariana Grande. She told me that watching and listening to Billie has helped her tremendously in accepting herself for herself and stop feeling bad for not being a completely unrealistic version of beauty. This is an amazing gift for an artist so young to really be touching lives in a positive way.
    Billie performed When the Party's Over at the Grammy's this year, you should check it out. I was blown away by the live version and how much emotion she puts into everything. Great reaction, love how you are speechless when it's over, that was exactly how I felt as well.

      Watching her sing live (and always with no auto-tune) makes me really appreciate her ability to connect with you emotionally. You can tell she is really feeling her songs because she sings with her eyes closed most of the time in a lot of her songs.

    She has said she likes to keep her song meanings open to individual interpretation because it’s art and art is subjective. I took some of the same from it, personally; that the black liquid represents the toxicity of a relationship that you know isn’t good for you but you can’t help but continue to consume it. Ultimately you have to release the toxic emotions.

    • @ThomasJ_Music
      @ThomasJ_Music  4 года назад +9

      NorthernEar Her videos tend to always have some sort of shock factor (her lyrics too). I’ve only heard her share her own meanings of her songs a couple times. Sometimes the visuals really take a different look to the actual meaning (that she has stated) and people take things out of context. A prime example is her song and video called “All The Good Girls Go To Hell”. She said all the Christians came after her for a song that’s actually about climate change. She also added that she’s not knocking Christianity, that just happens to be the group that loudly protested the song.

    I like your videos and look forward to more Billie Eilish. Her greatest gift as an artist is to evoke emotion. Watch it again with an open heart and try not to think too much. I watched this on my lunch break at work and was disturbed by this 3 minute video sung and acted by a teen aged girl all afternoon. Imagery in Billie's videos are taken from her life. The black tears come from a fan who drew a picture of Billie with black tears streaming down. Billie is a true artist.

    To me, the lyrics are about being in a toxic/abusive relationship, that you cling to because you "emotionally " can't afford to lose the person, but the party (meaning the nice period/love) is over and it is toxic, hence the black water. Now she is tearing herself up (her clothing) to patch up and she will lie about liking it like that (abusive) but is lying to herself. So her tears are litterally made from that toxicity, but since she drank it herself she is allowing it, which is what an abusive relationship can do to you. There is also the meaning that the relationship is with her own depression. She lies about liking it and thriving on it, but she is actually losing the battle of trying to keep herself together.

      NorthernEar I don’t doubt it. Have you listened to any of Finneas’ stuff? This is a sibling pair that is reshaping pop music. She also doesn’t use overt sexuality to “sell” herself to the audience. It’s refreshing and I’m so happy my 10 year old daughter listens to her.

    • @anne-marie8018
      @anne-marie8018 4 года назад

      Wow, my mind is blown too. I've only heard it the second way. Do you think the person who can't afford to lose is her, with a generic "you" or the other person? She starts with I, "I've learned to lose," then says you "you can't afford to." You can't afford to [lose]. Does she mean that in general no one can afford to lose? Or that this other person, who keeps her close and also at a distance, can't afford to lose? Both/anyone can't? All of the above? Or if it's the second way it would be "I've learned to lose you" then "[I] can't afford to." That they lived together and now don't is obvious from the context of "quiet coming home, I'm on my own," and doing separate things (somebody went to a party, and is asked to call when it's over, and it doesn't look like it was her). So I see both as possible. I'm not confused, or arguing; I'm so interested in this line having two meanings, or that I interpreted it incorrectly, or that it's just interesting. Thanks for the head cannon!

  • @vp4744

    Lyrical symbolsms are pretty straightforward if you know local idioms. The dark liquid symbolizes poisonous relationships. We don't give them up even if it consumes us -- a tragedy of the human condition.
    Admire your honesty. Billie evokes that same complex reaction in most serious listeners. Finneas wrote it. She heard it first from her room whie he was composing it. She wished he'd ask her to sing it, which he eventually did. The visuals were inspired by a drawing of black tears a fan made of her and passed it to her through security at a concert in Montreal. Billie posted the artwork on her Instagram. Billie asked her mother to sit in that chair while she worked out the camera angles for the music video.

    This song was written by Finneas her brother, after a breakup. The chord structure borrows from medieval church music. The vocals are all Billie and Finneas, recorded in his bedroom at their childhood home. Produced by Finneas.

    To me the song is more about a unrequited/one sided love where one person is in love with the other, who is friends, maybe a bit more, but is not romantically interested. So as the in love person you tell yourself you are satisfied with the crumbs you get from being friends, you take all that pain in, but you at some point have to let go of the friendship because it’s hurting too much

  • @samt6465
    @samt6465 4 года назад

    I'm not sure exactly what the intended message of the song is, but my interpretation of it is quite literal: getting out of a breakup with someone and being in the mindset of wanting to talk to that person, especially when you're emotionally vulnerable "call you when the party's over". How many could say they haven't wanted to drunk call their ex? "Quiet when I'm coming home, and I'm on my own, and I could lie say I like it that", she is telling herself that she is okay with being alone, but really she wants to be with this person. There might be a deeper meaning to these lyrics (and I'm sure there are plenty of Billie fans out there who would correct me) but I take these lyrics very simply for what they are.

    I think this song is about loss, be it relationships or death. The liquid she drinks is the darkness we all have to take in, due to what we all have to deal with...whether we like it or not. The tears are the same, just easier to see. I've dealt with my own share of loss and this song has helped me to deal with it. Watch more of her music, she's incredible! I go along with the other comments don't try to figure it all out. Billie has mention she no longer gives her interpretation of a song because everyone takes in there own meaning. She has said thats more importing to her. I guess with the exception of "Everything I Wanted" which has been all over the internet for it's meaning!
    There is something about Billie she sucks you in, you literally can not get enough of her. Part of it is her age she started so young just to see how she has changed and grown.

    At the end of the day it's just words. You can't know what the artist is thinking and the words can mean something totally different to you. Billie once talked about wanting to let people make her songs their own, meaning if you find any message in it that means something to you, it's just as valid as the original meaning she intended.

    Sorry that I'm late to your party (pun unintended?). I've been a Billie fan since her EP came out in 2017, completely blown away that a 15-year-old could put out music so deep and nuanced. (And that her brother was co-writing and producing all of it!) As for my interpretation of this song, I agree with you that she's singing about a toxic relationship. But part of me thinks she's singing from the POV of someone with depression singing to a friend-to-love interest who is just in a very different place than her right now. I think she's saying that he does care on some level, but he also still wants to go out and be social, be a teenager. And she just isn't in a place where she can do that. So it hurts her when he leaves her to go to parties (or doesn't want to leave when she's ready to go home?), but it also hurts her when she feels like she's holding him back from living his life. She knows she's the dark part of the relationship, so she tells him that he needs to let her let him go. She doesn't want to - she really doesn't **like** to be alone - but it's for the best...for both of them.
