I got this laptop just like a lot of others at Best Buy for Black Friday but I got an open box model that was only $380 + tax. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, got an IPS display and put in a 1TB sata ssd. I'm in about $600 total and I honestly love it. The screen is definitely the first thing that needs replacing but being able to have a gaming laptop for just over $400 with tax and then slowly upgrade was really awesome. I've worked on a lot of laptops and this is super easy to work on and upgrade.
I bought this for $450 during the bestbuy sale, came out to just below $500 after tax. 10 days later I returned it. The monitor was just so bad. Very dim, and the TN panel was as you said, terrible to look at unless you're dead set in front of it. Gaming performance was pretty good, and thermals were good. If someone ends up getting this, I highly recommend adding that second stick of RAM, and hooking up to an external monitor.
Totally agree 👍 I would have to use an external monitor. I would not dream of doing my videos on that panel. That ghosting was bad too, worse than most 60 hz displays i have seen. I bet Best Buy is now selling yours as an open box at $600 and coming out ahead !

I bought a newer one of these with a 144 Hz display and a Ryzen 5 5600H in it for 700 bucks. I already had a 1 TB 2.5" SSD and a 16 GB stick of RAM laying around, so this purchase was well worth it to me. It's not as cheap feeling as some people make this one out to be. Try buying all the components that make this laptop good separately, and you'll probably end up spending more than the unit itself.

I had an ASUS that had a screen that was so bad that it got sent back. I dont understand why one manufacturer can do so well for the same price the next one just tanks on. Great review!!

I also got this on Black Friday for $450 at Best Buy. The difference in the model from the review is that it came with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 256 NVME drive instead of what it appears to be regular SATA in your OwnorDisown review. I'm in the process of changing out the NVME to a better 500GB or 1TB more premium Sk Hynix Gold P31 or Samsung 970 Evo Plus for faster reads/writes 3,500mb/s & 3,200mb/s. The existing Samsung NVME is slow as every laptop/desktop manufacture gives you a stock NVME drive. Reads 2,800mb/s and Writes 1,100. I'm going to change out the RAM and Max it out at 32 GB (16GB x2) so it should fair better than what it was in stock. I know the display isn't great. I use it for work so it's fine for me. I usually use it for building and maintaining my website as well as normal business applications and it actually fairs well. Especially when I upgrade the NVME and Max out the Memory. I agree with you that laptops like this are priced too high. I really think most gaming laptops are priced too high. I've seen these deals on 2060 & 2070 laptops and to me it just looks like the prices they should have been all along. Sometimes when you actually have the extra $$$ for something like a laptop or desktop parts it's not when things are even in stock or at a good price.

I just bought the g14 and now I'm worried as they are refreshing it with the latest technology only next month. I got mine on black Friday for £1100 it came with the r7 1660ti with 16gb and a 1tb of storage. So at the time I thought that was cheap. I had my eye on the g14 from the second it got announced last year but wasn't willing to pay £1599. I couldn't believe how good this laptop was. I only like 14" laptops as they have to be portable I like to gaming in bed work etc. I can't do that with a 17" they just don't fit in my work bag and my motorbike lol.

But hook up the 1650 to a external display to avoid bottlenecks i think a gtx 1650 gddr6 can reach 2ghz considering my laptop's 1050 can reach 2ghz and it was on a less mature 14nm samsung node. When i OC'd my 1050 laptop to 2ghz i got around a 8-10fps boost in most games. Was pretty good.

Ryzen 5 4600h laptops are way higher here starting at $880 with gtx 1650...

I've experienced a freezing issue while using YT on chrome(I checked task manager and saw that chrome uses like 60-70% CPU during that time, and I don't get why).

This is the cheapest Ryzen 5 4600H laptop in India(alongside the TUF A15), it comes with no ssd and single channel ram. It costs 810 usd. Performance is on par with Nitro 5 when equipped with dual channel ram (I'm testing with 2666mhz dual channel). And Nitro 5 is 945USD (with single channel ram), so according to the price, it's worse in some countries and best in others' 😅 Edit: We get a different panel (60hz and 144hz, both 250nits and about 800:1 contrast and obviously 45% NTSC).
The US version in it's most popular configuration has the same screen as his but with a 256gb nvme, with the SATA bay being filled with a placeholder dummy drive, There is also a single stick of 8GB at 3200 mhz.
I got this laptop a week ago and noticed 2 problems. The hinge makes an awful sound when moving, sounds like there is dust in it. And the speakers distort extremely, playing a sample piano music track makes the speaker make terrible noises, it is almost unusable for music or movie watching. My panel is great though, got the 144hz version, which is bright (over 300nits) and has great contrast and viewing angles. Also it is equiped with 2*8 sticks of ram. I'm thinking of returning it because the speakers sound defective, and I'm even more convinced to do so now that I see you mentioned them as average.

@@Dani-yt8nk I actually had to return the laptop because the battery died two months after I bought it, but that should be a random thing that just happened. The reseller swapped in a new battery and shipped it back to me. I told them about the speakers and the hinge and they said they would look into it but they did nothing about it. Since then it's been 5 months and all seems mostly fine. It should be noted that the screen has a lot of flex, so I really don't feel comfortable putting it in a stuffed backpack. The keyboard and trackpad seem fine. Also, when running 100% cpu usage workloads the laptop hits 100c, the temps are fine when gaming though. I'm going to open it up soon for cleaning and apply some thermal grizzly kryonaut.
You have different types, one with 2x4, one with 1x8, 2x8 and 1x16, also in the storage there are differents, there are also types with a gtx1050, and different CPUs
I bought this for $450 from BestBuy, and it came with the terrible display and one stick of 8gb 3200 RAM. I added another 8gb stick and I ordered a replacement screen, but the screen hasn't arrived yet. Do you recommend any tuning software for these other than a voltage curve in afterburner?

@@4pretender well without the panel model number, it's hard to say, but I can at least see it's supposed to be an IPS panel, so with how bad the stock is, its pretty much a guaranteed upgrade. The only potential problem is the dimensions might be wrong. I'll try looking up the laptop that it's supposed to be a replacement for and figure out

There are so many HP Pavilion Gaming 15 variations. One must choose carefully to not end up with a shitty one like the one you reviewed. I got one with dual-channel 16GB RAM, 144hz bright screen, a fast 1TB SSD Samsung, and GTX 1660 ti max q. I got it on a reduced price by 30% which made it quite a decent purchase. The cooling system is pretty good; It is also very easy to open and replace parts. I only complain that it has just 1 USB 3.0 port and one USB C which does not support video...
Yes indeed, that's why its very important to read the spec sheet fully. If it doesn't mention a refresh rate its 60 hz. Glad you like yours! Its a shame the USB C is data only I agree 👍
Bro, please review and compare Asus Tuf A15 model with this (similar hardware model) and tell your opinion. PS. I am commenting this from my A15 with R5-4500H; GTX 1650.
This laptop is cost around 900usd in Indonesia. But the screen is not that terrible. The viewing angle is good, but the screen ghosting is highly noticeable. It comes with 144hz panel. It also has the dual channel variant. It comes with SSD only. Which is a high speed samsung's ssd (3500++mBps read on cdismark). It's quite high demand here because of the "cheap" price tag.
Singĺe-channel memory is ok for office notebooks - simply because gaming isn't important but it allows to install a 2nd memory stick that would double the RAM capacity later on if needed. But it's definitely a no-go for gaming notebooks and really, WHAT was HP THINKING?? Concerning Ryzen notebooks it's so hard to find one with a well performing AX built-in wifi adapter, 15.6" display and 100% sRGB range, a separate numeric block, non-glare display with a good and even luminosity, great battery-life and a decent overall build quality. The only brand that at least on paper offers that in my region is Tuxedo in Germany (I believe it's the Chinese Tongfang OEM manufacturing these notebooks). There's really a lack of choice if Ryzen is a criteria when choosing a notebook.
That's unfortunate display, In my region however, this model is the cheapest gaming laptop that comes with 4800H + 1660Ti, with IPS panel 72% NTSC, & 300 NITS.

I think Ebay is your only choice... The only place I know that does spare parts is rjtech but that is for Clevo systems.

Yeah, the speakers were not great. Shame because they are Bang and Olufsen.

@@Dani-yt8nk I actually had to return the laptop because the battery died two months after I bought it, but that should be a random thing that just happened. The reseller swapped in a new battery and shipped it back to me. I told them about the speakers and the hinge and they said they would look into it but they did nothing about it. Since then it's been 5 months and all seems mostly fine. It should be noted that the screen has a lot of flex, so I really don't feel comfortable putting it in a stuffed backpack. The keyboard and trackpad seem fine. Also, when running 100% cpu usage workloads the laptop hits 100c, the temps are fine when gaming though. I'm going to open it up soon for cleaning and apply some thermal grizzly kryonaut.
this laptop is screaming gamer specific with that design and color but lacks finer things and optimisation... as usual!

You have different types, one with 2x4, one with 1x8, 2x8 and 1x16, also in the storage there are differents, there are also types with a gtx1050, and different CPUs
I bought this for $450 from BestBuy, and it came with the terrible display and one stick of 8gb 3200 RAM. I added another 8gb stick and I ordered a replacement screen, but the screen hasn't arrived yet. Do you recommend any tuning software for these other than a voltage curve in afterburner?

@@4pretender well without the panel model number, it's hard to say, but I can at least see it's supposed to be an IPS panel, so with how bad the stock is, its pretty much a guaranteed upgrade. The only potential problem is the dimensions might be wrong. I'll try looking up the laptop that it's supposed to be a replacement for and figure out

As for tuning, the CPU runs well so that just leaves overclocking the 1650 with afterburner..

There are so many HP Pavilion Gaming 15 variations. One must choose carefully to not end up with a shitty one like the one you reviewed. I got one with dual-channel 16GB RAM, 144hz bright screen, a fast 1TB SSD Samsung, and GTX 1660 ti max q. I got it on a reduced price by 30% which made it quite a decent purchase. The cooling system is pretty good; It is also very easy to open and replace parts. I only complain that it has just 1 USB 3.0 port and one USB C which does not support video...
Yes indeed, that's why its very important to read the spec sheet fully. If it doesn't mention a refresh rate its 60 hz.

This laptop is cost around 900usd in Indonesia. But the screen is not that terrible. The viewing angle is good, but the screen ghosting is highly noticeable. It comes with 144hz panel. It also has the dual channel variant. It comes with SSD only. Which is a high speed samsung's ssd (3500++mBps read on cdismark).
It's quite high demand here because of the "cheap" price tag.
Also hp pavilion gaming 15 is one of the best entry level gaming laptop alongside lenovo ideapad gaming

Singĺe-channel memory is ok for office notebooks - simply because gaming isn't important but it allows to install a 2nd memory stick that would double the RAM capacity later on if needed. But it's definitely a no-go for gaming notebooks and really, WHAT was HP THINKING??
Concerning Ryzen notebooks it's so hard to find one with a well performing AX built-in wifi adapter, 15.6" display and 100% sRGB range, a separate numeric block, non-glare display with a good and even luminosity, great battery-life and a decent overall build quality. The only brand that at least on paper offers that in my region is Tuxedo in Germany (I believe it's the Chinese Tongfang OEM manufacturing these notebooks). There's really a lack of choice if Ryzen is a criteria when choosing a notebook.
The only thing I like about it is the design to be honest.
It cools well at least.

That's unfortunate display, In my region however, this model is the cheapest gaming laptop that comes with 4800H + 1660Ti, with IPS panel 72% NTSC, & 300 NITS.
