The drama-filled final play of the messy 1994 Knicks-Bulls Game 3 needs a deep rewind

- "Teamwork makes the dream work." I’ve always thought that was a dumb phrase. I understand the message and the benefits gained from children hearing such a concept, but the idea of using that string of words to motivate adults just feels buck wild. I have a hunch that Scottie Pippen would agree with me.
This isn’t to say he was a bad teammate. You could make the argument that he understood better than anyone else in the ‘90s what teamwork meant as he sacrificed some of himself for the sake of the team. Pippen was rewarded with championships from those Bulls squads, but in 1993 was finally out of Michael Jordan’s shadow. Ready for it to be the Scottie show, he wasn’t totally prepared for who stepped in front of him: Tony Kukoc.
Now, it wasn’t an every night occurrence, but the one that mattered most was in game 3 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals against the New York Knicks. Pippen benched himself. Seriously. That and so much more make this moment beyond worthy of a deep rewind. So, enjoy!

Welcome, Clara! This is a really good episode. It’s the same rewinder, but it definitely has a few new creative styles that I really like.
Welcome Clara! Great video, I'd love to see more episodes with you as a narrator in future :)
Please rewind the 1994 World Cup final penalty missed by Baggio
I remember sitting with friends in a Chicago bar and just screaming at the TV "WHAT ARE YOU DOING PHIL?" and then Kukoc's shot went in and we went "Oh, I guess that's what you're doing." Because apparently after three championships we hadn't learned that Phil Jackson was better at basketball than we were.
hey Mike!
@@SecretBaseSBN Hey SB Nation! Lovely seeing Ryan last week. Let's play some games soon.
Mike Selinker Phil Jackson wasn’t even the best basketball coach in the arena that night.
Ron Davis Pat Riley could do more with less. He was the superior coach.
TheGodYouWishYouKnew Bold, but yeah it’s a reasonable opinion. Riley is a basketball genius and I loved the Knicks when he led them. I only wish he’d kept X-Man around.
I like how Phil Jackson walked off, looking like, "Exactly how I planned it."
So... Did Seth bench himself because SB Nation wanted Clara to take the final video?
She's basically a female version with her VO style.
I liked her, her voice makes sarcasm better 🙌
Probably too painful for him. Especially since the team has been dead for a couple years now.

...And that's why Kukoc had a 10 clutch score in "NBA Jam T.E"

So not one camera was focused in on Scotty to get his reaction ? Very disappointing to say the least, Phil walking off like a genius is iconic lol
Imagine being in the shadow of jordan and being threatened with the shadow of kukoc.
My highschool team was exactly like the bulls only at the time i didnt know it, i only see it now.
We had an mj who was far better than all of us, his cousin played pro ball and even coached us, but our mj left too, he was more interested in bar fights at 16 and drugs, i dont even know if he is still alive 25 years later. When our mj left, our pippen took over, he was good but not mj good, not even pippen good, and hardly ever played D, he was cocky and a ball hog and a bit of a bully (to us saying we were the reason we lost), going 2v1 rather than trust our harper or kukoc to shoot, it was frustrating cos we lost many games i believe at his fault (and we probably won more, or atleast lost closer games without him). Our kukoc and our pippen never really teamed up either, and to be honest our kukoc was a better scorer with teamwork, actual playbook moves instead of isolation. I was a white rodman scoring more charges blocks and steals than points and played 40+ minutes and our steve kerr was an amazing pointguard.

As someone who doesn't stay in the US, this series makes me get the passion behind some of the sports that a lot of people in my part of the world find boring.
I remembered my father and my brother talked about that shot, and Pip throwing a tantrum. Damn, that last shot. That must have hurt Scottie's feelings a lot.
The funny thing is, if the Bulls lost, it would have made Pippen look even worse, so even though it had to hurt, he's probably lucky....lol
Pippen wrote 4-PEAT on the soles of his shoes during that playoff series. And yeah, Kukoc was legendary man.

I think Scottie has always had this resentment towards Michael, Phil, & his teammates
Crazy how anyone these days can call another person a racist without hard proof. I don't think a racist white coach would last a month in a league filled with 95% black players.
@@lamarsmith657 I agree. He has always felt under appreciated, was always in Jordan’s shadow, and it was clear at the time he took this call by Phil Jackson as a deep insult (it was the right call though if you’re trying to win the game rather than stroke his ego. Pippen is an all time great and the best perimeter defender in history imo. However, he was only a decent outside shooter when he could catch and shoot when set. He was terrible at the one dribble pull up from outside. He was amazing at driving and either finishing or hitting a team mate for a wide open shot, and if there were 5+ seconds I feel certain he would have been the guy with the ball, but with 1.8 seconds you need a turn and shoot off balance or a one dribble pull up, and Kukoc was far better at this, not to mention a superior shooter. Pippen incredible skill set just didn’t match this situation, that’s all). However, I think it’s pretty clear that something is off with Pippen. His son recently died (I can’t imagine the agony), he’s going through a divorce and with all of his wife’s cheating allegations he is getting a bad wrap for looking like a push over etc. Add in the way they did him wrong imo in the Last Dance, and you’ve got the perfect storm. I’m not saying he has a substance abuse problem, but the interview with Dan Patrick he seemed under the influence of something and his behavior was erratic, not just angry but off and didn’t make good arguments the way he usually does.

Probably the same as Phil Jackson’s reaction.
Bill Cartwright was yelling at him on the bench. And after the game he yelled at him all way too the locker room and made him apologize to the team.
@@dariog36th he made pippen apologize?
@@Chopan8809 yes. Scottie apologized to entire team in the locker room. Bill Cartwright was a respected veteran of the league and you can see him yelling at Scottie on the bench and according to teammates he kept yelling at him in the locker room.
Phil's face says every single thing that happened in this video. However, Toni hitting this shot probably kept Scottie in Chicago and definitely enabled the most disrespectful dunk of all time: Scottie over Patrick in Game 6.
You can't watch a Pippen video without a mention of Krause refusing to renegotiate his contract. When Pippen was offered that contract, everyone in his circle - Jordan included - told him not to sign it, but he blew off all the advice and signed it anyway. Live with your mistakes.
Amazing how no one mentions this Fact about Scottie's bad decision. 😂🤣😂🤣 And apparently Scottie has forgotten it too.
The time where Krause was the contract issue was when Pippen was trying to get a new extension from his rookie deal. And Krause wouldn’t discuss it with Scottie and told him to recruit Kukoc because he’d drafted him and wanted him to make the move to the Bulls when he didn’t want to yet. And he wouldn’t even talk to Scottie about a new deal for him because he wanted to leave the cap space to pay Kukoc and convince him to make the jump. So Scottie had a valid gripe that he wouldn’t even talk to a guy who’d been out performing what he was earning because he wanted to use the money to give a good deal to the new guy.
And the season they finally got Kukoc to make his jump they didn’t have much cap space so they signed Kukoc to a long term deal for a lower amount of money that only paid him around $1M for his rookie season but they gave him the ability to void the remaining years and opt out after the first year so they could give him a better contract when they had more cap space the next year. And then they tripled his salary after his rookie year, which the NBA voided since it clearly was done to get around salary cap rules, and the bulls took it to court and won to give Kukoc his deal. They bent over backwards to make sure that they paid Toni, including skirting the rules, and fought for it in court. Meanwhile they’d delayed Scottie’s first extension to be able to pay Toni and then did all the moves when Toni came to make sure he was paid well.
That’s easy to see why that would be disrespect. Scottie is now your teams leader and you have refused to work through his deal multiple times despite how well he’s performed for you and over delivered both the deals he’s had. But then a new guy who has no equity or done anything for your team you do everything you possibly can to make sure you pay him. What reaction would anybody expect him to have to that? That goes way past making a choice to sign contract that would’ve been better to have not signed. That’s blatant disrespect of a cornerstone of your franchise who has delivered over and over for you while going above and beyond in every way to make sure a new guy who wouldn’t even report to your team for years gets paid well. That’s not only idiotic in managing the relationship with a top player but just idiotic in general to treat people on your team. Say what you will on Scottie but I think most people would feel like he did in the same shoes.
@@Matt-cr4vvAll that to defend a quitter? You’re beyond useless and should join Pippen’s son

The biggest flaw in how people view Scottie is the relationship to MJ. Scottie Pippen is NEVER the Scottie Pippen we know without Michael literally forcing Scottie to put in the work and toughen up. People say Jordan never won anything without Scottie but Michael was just entering His prime. The real statement is that Scottie Pippen never develops into the player he was without Michael kicking his ass day in and day out
There's no way of proving that. Michael never won even a playoff experience without Scottie.
@@MrOctober44 Playoffs experience? Jordan won 1 game vs a 60 win Bucks in his rookie season, then went on to face the greatest Celtics team in history with 5 hall of famers for the next 2 seasons, and has the still playoffs record high for points in single game at 63 points. Then in Pippen's rookie season, Jordan won against the Cavaliers team being the underdog, by averaging 45/5/5/3/1 for the series, and Scottie Pippen wasn't even a starter and wasn't even the Bulls 2nd, or 3rd best player.

NBA rookie (though Kukoc was in his 20's & already played pro in Europe) and 3 game winners prior to this game, that's amazing! Though this was the Knicks & Pippen was having an MVP season, Phil Jackson made the right choice (prior to the result) to ask Kukoc to take the last shot bec he already proved himself 3x during that season. And also bec Pippen's last shot before that final play, he missed it in the worst possible way. So Phil's decision was not only logical, it was also fair and reasonable.

thanks for the amazing content this year guys, keep it up👍🏼 merry christmas 🎁🎄
Great episode... good old days when Knicks Bulls rivalry was something to look forward to.
Also great job Clara Morris! Hope to hear more episodes from you.
Whos here after pippen remarks on phil as a racist
I think Pippen and Kukocs relationship improved. I remember a clip where scottie passes the ball to toni for a dunk and afterwards pippen hugs kukoc.
They were always freinds, pippen hated Krause for a bad contract and Krause refused to renegotiate.. which then made Toni a better paid player then Scottie. Wasn’t tonis fault at all but because he was “Krause boy” he had a target on his back.

Ngl, she's perfect for those sarcastic moments, I stan
Phil’s nonchalant “I told you so” face after the shot makes it even worse😂
Imagine the tweets if Twitter existed during this!
Imagine scottie's tweet too LOL
Scottie went on to remind everyone about this moment in 2021
Great job Clara. Liked the fresh emphasis on the classic sarcastic tone of these episodes
Really excited to see a new writer and host of the rewinder series. Clara killed it with her wit and sarcasm. Cant wait to see more from her and SB
Hi Clara! For rewinder, I have a few baseball recommendations
-Pete Rose just barreling over Ray Fosse in the 1970 MLB all star game
-Bill Mazeroski’s game 7 walk off series winning home run in 1960
- Pedro striking out 5 in 2 innings in the 1999 all star game
- Joey Bautista’s bat flip and the whole inning/game
- Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS
I Love me some baseball and the channel!
One of the wackiest playoff series in NBA history. From this Kukoc game-winner and Scottie sitting out, to Hue Hollins' awful foul call on Pippen at the end of Game 5, to Pippen's dunk on Ewing in Game 6, all the fights and inner conflicts, this series was insanely entertaining. The whole series deserves a deep dive and rewind, lol. Well done, Clara and SB Nation.
Yep, even games 1 and 2 with the bulls blowing leads. And game 7 was entertaining for 3 quarters.
Clara has a good grasp on commentary and doesn’t shove crappy forced comedy or her gender in her style. SB isn’t going “Woke”.
This is what people want. Great job by Clara.
Im a person, and I dont want this.
Idk if it’s the writing on this episode or the presenter but this was definitely one of my favorite episodes of rewinder. Felt like the context surrounding everything was better explained.
Mike was in on the Kukoc Olympic shutdown it wasn't all Scottie.
That was how he supported Scottie. It wasn't his fight ,per se.
She is really good would love to see more of her. Love her knowledge and the way she presents everything. Either way I hope you guys have an amazing holiday and looking forward to more videos.
Great video Clara! And SB nation
4:05 David Stern with the "I will not tolerate this behaviour from Happy Gilmore on the Pro Tour" look.
Great video Clara!!
Please make the next rewinder about “The Play” in Cal vs Stanford with the band on the field!!!
