I was lucky enough to catch Sam in Columbia MO a couple weeks ago. He said the greatest thing I have ever heard, "Prepare to have your face peeled off, from the intense mellowness." One of a kind.
Had the pleasure of meeting Sam Beam in Chicago. I worked at a design firm that was below a studio where he has recorded many songs. I went outside for my usual cigarette and he was sitting on the bench and I sat next to him. It blew my mind because I was (and still am) such a huge fan of his music. I did not however want to embarrass him or myself by coming off as star struck, so we said our hellos and a bit of small talk. I saw him a few days later and he shook my hand and asked how I was doing. As an aspiring musician writing in a similar genre, I was thoroughly delighted in our paths crossing. Part of me wishes I would have told him how much he inspires me, so until we meet again: Sam, Thank you for making such beautiful music. And thank you for being so kind. Phil
lucky encounter for you. I am warmed to hear that he was kind unlike many in the spotlight. I had no doubt that would be the case, but good to hear your anecdote. thanks
Something I appreciate most about iron and wines songs, particularly the old ones, is how beautiful they age with time. I usually don’t like watching artists perform old songs especially if they are performed differently but when Sam performs his songs they may change but they become more beautiful. The songs are sung by someone who has been changed by life and years. The beauty of the song makes me cry to think of how I’ve changed since I listened to these songs and how appropriate Sams performance is at conveying how things change over time. It’s so rare that music moves me in this way.
Call Your Boys - I can't stop listening to it. It makes me think of my father and it makes me cry. He's still alive and I'm a grown man, but the mere thought that my brother and I might have been disappointments to him brings me to tears every time. If your parents are still around, just remember that they won't be forever. We're all on limited time. Let them know that their efforts and sacrifices in raising you weren't in vain, but don't just do it in words, show them by making something of yourself. Show them by taking care of your family, being a loving father or mother. Show them that when they are gone, their lives as parents will have meant something. That's my goal in life, as important as any other career or other goal. :)
@@inspectorjavert5563 I promise you they are not. The story and the message of his songs may be indirect or a little cryptic but as you connect the dots it’s meaning sinks deep. Keep listening!
2 years ago I was working at Blue Bottle, and Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop came in and after their coffee I asked if I was doing a good job playing it cool about the fact they were there. Sam laughed and we small talked for a minute and he asked my coworker and I if we wanted to be on the list for their show at the Great American in SF. So, so rad, and Sam is such a great guy!
"This next song is a longer one" I actually held my breath, but didn't really think it would be The Trapeze Swinger. Got a bit teary eyed. Whole performance was stunning ✨
I don't know if I'm crying because I'm incredibly happy or incredibly sad. I don't know how something can be so depressing and uplifting at the same time
Through out the time and space, folk is so classic. Everyone wearing black and the background is white and the music is so grey to my feeling. Thats so good.

all the critics.... This is music, real music, which is lost in this day and age. Sam makes music for the love, for the expression. Appreciate that and his unbelievable talent to write and play so wonderfully. who cares about acoustics when all of the above exists! P.S. - Summer clouds is my new favourite Iron & Wines tune
Just walked by him on Ridgeway Ave in Chicago. Saw an instrument case with IRON And WINE stenciled on. Searched online and here we are. Nice stuff. I like the instrumentation on these videos. The musical possibilities are endless. When you have time, Goggle THE HOUSEWIFE LOVED A BANDIT. We have somethings in common.
Long time fan, but new to this concert video. Excellent as usual. Also - bucket list item: to one day play in a band with the amazing Beth Goodfellow on drums. Seriously awesome musician!

OH MY GOD THE CHILLS.
Trapeze swinger live is a weakness that I cannot vanquish.

the lyrics are nonsensical though. literal gibberish
Great comments Josh

Trapeze swinger is one of the best songs I've ever heard. so great!
Gotta listen to The Trapeze Swinger a second time immediately! So damn good!
You gotta hear The Trapeze Swinger cover by Gregory Alan Isakov
Sams music always makes me cry, but like a good, refreshing, much needed cry.
Wish I could hit a "love" button. Especially for "The Trapeze Swinger". Indescribable.

Adriana Somma that song always makes me teary eyed. ALWAYS,
Richard Tines
Never the same twice!
That was the song my wife walked up to me on our wedding day
Another Somma that like I&W nice
Adriana Somma when he says "its the first band i've played it with", the version on 'around the well' sounds like a band...
I don't know if I'm crying because I'm incredibly happy or incredibly sad. I don't know how something can be so depressing and uplifting at the same time
i feel ya brother, its a mind fuck for me as well
It's pure melancholic feeling ❤
The magic of Sam
Happens to the best of us.. it's just powerful
It’s called hearing truth
This version of Call Your Boys is so freaking good!
The original version of Cinder & Smoke gets me every time, but this one is equally as good. A truly rare occurrence, and I could not be more pleased.

Sam doesn't usually need more than his voice and a guitar but the band really enhances everything. Damn amazing performance.
really depends on the band he's playing with to be honest with you :D but i agree this band really enhances his songs
This is pure heaven. One of best musicians alive today.. Sam you're voice of emotions.
I recently began to listen to Iron & Wine, and I haven't stopped since that moment.
Marco Noguez try #BonIver
The harmonies are delicious. Shepard's Dog - so haunting and wonderful. There has never been a better poet/musician.
I know others have already said this but it bears repeating. The performance of "Call Your Boys" is outstanding.

Always coming back to Sam Beam’s music at a changing point in life. Dearly listened, and always new.

great to see there is still music out there.
Just amazing. Thanks for sharing guys! Your music transcends me to another place. All is well in the world. Peace.
I'm kinda loving you guys! Cheers from Chile.
I never heard Iron & Wine live. This is a whole different level!
I saw Sam with another band some 6 years ago in Copenhaguen and that was crazy good. This band is brilliant but that was something else.
Watch his performance on the artists den.
Not Right Music enjoy yourself, my friend; you've got some research to do, lol
Agreed! I've been listening to Iron & Wine on and off for years and never quite got there, but this is indeed a whole different level :)
Search the KEXP live sessions, It's him solo only with his guitar and his beard, thank me later! :)
Great to see him evolve. Remember hearing him live at radio city hall in nyc. Still love his acoustic solos
I love that he has a cellist in his band! Sam was so funny at his concert in Honolulu a few years ago. I hope he will return.
How the hell can 73 people "dislike" this? Sort your heads out folks.
Meu sonho assistir um show do Sam aqui no Brasil. Artista incrível!
He played in São Paulo 2 years ago. I was there.
First time I heard and see Sam and his band, wow excellent, different, wonderful arrangements and better performace, I really like it. Thanks a lot
After years my comeback set for the perfect vibes of Iron and Wine. Very encapsulating, but everything must evolve and mutate.
Please, remember me happily
By the rosebush laughing
With bruises on my chin, the time when
We counted every black car passing
Your house beneath the hill
And up until someone caught us in the kitchen
With maps, a mountain range, a piggy bank
A vision too removed to mention
[Verse 2]
But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry
[Verse 3]
And please, remember me that Halloween
Making fools of all the neighbors
Our faces painted white
By midnight, we'd forgotten one another
And when the morning came I was ashamed
Only now it seems so silly
That season left the world and then returned
And now you're lit up by the city
[Verse 4]
So please, remember me mistakenly In the window of the tallest tower
Calling passers-by but much too high
To see the empty road at happy hour
Gleam and resonate, just like the gates
Around the holy kingdom
With words like "Lost and found" and "Don't look down"
And "Someone save temptation"
[Verse 5]
And please, remember me as in the dream
We had as rug-burned babies
Among the fallen trees and fast asleep
Beside the lions and the ladies
That called you what you like and even might
Give a gift for your behavior
A fleeting chance to see a trapeze
Swinger high as any savior
[Verse 6]
But please, remember me, my misery
And how it lost me all I wanted
Those dogs that love the rain and chasing trains
The colored birds above their running
In circles around the well and where it spells
On the wall behind St. Peter
So bright, on cinder gray, in spray paint
"Who the hell can see forever?"
[Verse 7]
And please, remember me seldomly In the car behind the carnival
My hand between your knees, you turned from me
And said, "The trapeze act was wonderful
But never meant to last", the clown that passed
Saw me just come up with anger
When it filled with circus dogs, the parking lot
Had an element of danger
[Verse 8]
So please, remember me finally
And all my uphill clawing
My dear, but if I make the pearly gates
I'll do my best to make a drawing
Of God and Lucifer, a boy and girl
An angel kissing on a sinner
A monkey and a man, a marching band
All around a frightened trapeze swinger

Thank you.
That is wonderful music! You all should keep that band together, forever! 8 )
Just saw him play in DC-- totally worth it! Not many artists you can say are better live.
Iron & Wine nunca decepciona, que excelente performance e que banda ótima..
So much love for this set. The nylon strings are a change, and what an ensemble, too.
Call Your Boys is really good
Hell yes it is brother

I saw him live in Clearwater, FL as part of his Back to Basics tour-Phenomenal. I'm loving what he did with Cinder & Smoke in this video.
A singer as humble as his voice.
"Where the dreams in the backwater drown us far from home.."... Bless you Samuel Ervin Beam!!
He’s named after Sam Ervin the Senator? !!
His new songs are really good like new sounds but still iron and wine, well recorded too, want more live performances like this
Beautiful and sensitive song.... i really liked !! congratulations!!!

Jesus, this is great music!

THIS. Is. Amazing.
I'm a Deadhead.
I love Benny Goodman.
I love Stravinsky! Bartok! Ravel!
But music that speaks to the soul.....
Is RARE
This is it.
Love it.
There's no better lyricist alive.
Damien Rice could give him a run. Love them both, this is awesome!
Listen to Hozier

C'mon, Lil Pump...
