Just discovered these guys. I am close to 70 and spend my RUclips time reminiscing with the bands of the 60’s and 70’s. All I can say is that new music is alive and well as long as this kind of talent emerges once in a while. What a relief to find a band with something to say and a unique way of saying it.
Hey gchapman310 I'm nearly 67 and I discovered these guys about 4 years ago. They are wonderful! and I agree with you entirely. It's like going back 40 or 50 years ago.. all the inovative musicians then. I love it.
He sounded this way when I caught them in San Diego last September, and it was truly awe-inspiring to hear live. It seems his vocals have been impeccable for all of the touring behind Crack-Up :)
Wish they added the ending of grown ocean instead of the beggining of I Am All That I Need so we could've had this transition on the record. Apparently the transition was planned all along.
I made Robin laugh at the beginning of Blue Ridge Mountains and this is one of the things I'm most proud of. This is the band of my life and finally my dream came true when I saw them live. Their music has been with me on my highest and lowest moments and I think listening their music is one of my top 5 things I love most to do on my life. Thanks for existing Fleet Foxes.
Nice!!! They played in my hometown and I was able to get him to laugh as well! I shouted some dumb shit and he laughed. I don’t remember what I said though.
I agree 1000%. This band dont just influence people.....they go far deeper than that......they take us that far inside ourselves that they rouse the inner cave man in us all
Since Pitchfork was too lazy to stamp the rest of this incredible set.. 0:15 Grown Ocean 5:04 I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar 10:22 Cassius, - 15:16 - Naiads, Cassadies 17:53 Drops in the River 22:37 Winter White Hymnal 25:00 Ragged Wood 29:56 Your Protector 34:22 Fool's Errand 37:29 He Doesn't Know Why 41:28 On Another Ocean (January / June) 44:56 Blue Ridge Mountains 48:35 Mykonos 53:33 Mearcstapa 58:52 If You Need to, Keep Time on Me 1:02:42 Third of May / Ōdaigahara (with false start lol) 1:08:14 Helplessness Blues 1:13:57 I'm A Fool For You (Curtis Mayfield/The Impressions Cover) 1:18:40 Oliver James (Encore)
Not only is this amazing music and an excellent performance, but I couldn't help noticing how the audience sat quietly and took it all in. No fighting, no yelling and screaming. A beautiful, peaceful event.
I really have to mention just how incredible the harmony vocals of Christian Wargo is and how well his humble personality fits the band. I'd wish his voice was more noticeable in the studio mixes, because everytime i see them live or listen to a live recording he's just absolutely spot on.
Christian is amazing and all of them look so humble. I think Josh Tillman left because his ego is too big for this band, but it's better that way because now we get 2 amazing bands.
An exceptional band of brothers... as an old guy (61) it warms my heart to see passion and musicality on this scale. Easily as good as any classic band you could mention. The acid test for any act is how they translate albums in a live setting. FF make a monster crowd like this Pitchfork audience seem somehow intimate. Amazing musicianship. Their cover of Curtis Mayfield and the Impression's "Fool For You" was just sublime. Hopefully there are more teenage kids out there starting to want to take the whole thing forward like the Foxes obviously did when they first formed. Not at all hyperbolic to call them North America's finest!!!
The elder speaks, then sits down, heard from his presence, silently watching his every move.... then he winks at me.... In some way it was going to be okay...1990's childhood 'was sorely missed'
I didn't think I could love this song even more... but heck, what a performance! Robin's voice has a clarity now that does the song right, and the intro is enough to make me hope they re-record the song in this style as (yet another) alternative version.
This makes me so happy and also can we say how much more robins stage presence increased like he was so young and awkward beforehand. He’s like a shining star on stage now.
Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you for-Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you. T H A N K Y O U S O M U C H
That and his posture is totally different then the years before. He can probably get a lot more air while standing up straight. And he used to smoke, maybe he stopped doing that? ;)
I’ve been listening to this band for a little over a decade-currently 28. I cannot stress enough how incredible it is to learn that there is such an unknown connection between all of us.
I wholeheartedly agree with all the comments regarding the sound quality of the recording, Robin's voice and stage presence, and the musicianship of the whole band. However, massive shout out must go to Christian Wargo and his understated, but huge influence, on the band's sound. His high harmonies are so integral to the Fleet Foxes sound. Without them, the band would sound a lot different. Apparently he was solely responsible for the amazing vocal arrangements for the Mykonos coda, one of the loveliest passages of music and harmonies in their back catalogue.
Totally agree. I think Josh Tillman is crazy talented but having Christian on main harmony and the new drummer (sorry, forgot his name) are so much better IMHO.
This band is great. Helped me through some tough times. Ragged Wood, Protector, Blue Ridge Mountains, Helplessness Blues and Oliver James are just so damn good.
After wanting to see them live for a good 10 years, I couldn't have asked for a better show. So grateful to have seen this live and be able to relive it here, too!
Quite possibly the best performance of Drops In the River I have heard.....The vocals....Wow.....I saw them live in Novemeber and was blown away. There are not enough superlatives to descibe these boys.....they really are something very very special
I saw them live in a dark bar with a very small crowd in 2008 and they were fantastic. The first LP wasn’t even out yet. I walked away with the Sun Giant EP. They sound even better now. His voice is fantastic. I didn’t recognize him at first without the long hair and beard. What a great band.
Just when I thought I loved Grown Ocean to a point I couldn't possibly top, that live performance of that song just made me love it even more. An absolutely amazing set from an incredible band.
Wow!!! I've watched a hundred live FF vids/shows and this is as great as I've seen them, it might even be the best I've ever seen them. Simply flawless and so in the pocket..These guys are the most important band going today, and IMO belong on the same level as my heros from the 60s and 70s, all the big bands and singers, they're that good...
This is a band that just keeps getting better and better all the time. Been a fan of them since 2008. First watched this video in 2019, at the time I was blown away, thought this was a band absolutely at it's peak, couldn't imagine them getting any better. Just saw them live a few nights ago, at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was easily the best live performance I've ever witnessed
I love watching this performance. The live versions of these songs just makes it all come to life. I love coming back to this in times of turmoil and when I'm searching for a guiding light.
These guys are too good. Honestly, how have i spent 13 years of my life without them. My school did helplessness blues a few years ago and now they are doing it again so i investigated them a bit and now they are definitely one of my top bands.
Your Protector has always been a particular favourite of mine but that performance was other-worldly. Absolutely blown away by the vocals and huge props to the production team on this- the mix is phenomenal.
Simply the best. I believe when it's all said and done, these guys will be remembered as one of the forefathers of modern folk-indie rock. My feeling was the same when Radiohead dropped Pablo Honey and then The Bends soon after, you just knew a legend was born. I feel the same way about The Fleet Foxes. There's just nobody other than, I'd say, Bon Iver, who comes close.
Benjamin Coady I think Bon Ivers For Emma album was their peak, and my favorite, but Fleet Foxes overall is a whole lot better, almost everything they release is amazing
Give her a raise! ... or at the very least some lobster bisque flavored vape juice. Hope to see you in the great state of Vermont again one day. Easily the top show I've ever seen. Cheers.
Robin Pecknold, you are one of the biggest inspirations of my entire life and this performance seems to me like a victory lap to all the demons you've defeated over the years. Been with you guys for over a decade now and I'll never be able to express in words how much your music, passion, and your life story and tenacity behind it all has helped and motivated me. This is what people mean when they say a band changed their life. You guys did. Thank you all, forever
Just discovered this band by accident a couple of months ago. When I first heard the song can I believe i just fell into it. It is one of the most beautiful romantic songs I have heard and I am 69. Great music!!
I'm obsessed with the new arrangement they do for 'Helplessness Blues'. It sounds so good lower like that and the whole ending is perfect. I just saw them in concert a few months ago and have been listening to it on loop.
So heavenly. It's crazy how balanced this band his. A touch of bleakness amongst an ocean of light. It's a blissful just representation of how I see my life. Feels so good to have songs like that. Honest and true.
I can only imagine that I'd cry in this situation; if I were in that crowd. Thank you Pitchfork for this amazing quality video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm touched.
One of the only modern bands I listen to along with the likes of Tame Impala and Mac DeMarco. Foxes are by far my favourite, they're so important to modern music and they're so important to me. Shame all my friends think they're boring
as my fav fleet foxes song, it came as a bummer that they chose to open with it both here at pitchfork and at the newport in columbus in May, but what better way to set my heart alight for an evening of some beautiful sounds?
I've had the good fortune of seeing them three times since Crack Up came out and I think this is the best I've heard it sound live! Always great but this was clearly a very well-performed set.
Just discovered these guys. I am close to 70 and spend my RUclips time reminiscing with the bands of the 60’s and 70’s. All I can say is that new music is alive and well as long as this kind of talent emerges once in a while. What a relief to find a band with something to say and a unique way of saying it.
There will always be good music around its just that because of the internet lots of trash gets to make its way to us
Hey gchapman310 I'm nearly 67 and I discovered these guys about 4 years ago. They are wonderful! and I agree with you entirely. It's like going back 40 or 50 years ago.. all the inovative musicians then. I love it.
There's a lot more out there. Listen to "Dayzed Inn Daydreams" by Ariel Pink
Check out Shakey Graves!!
If I may, I feel quiet the same, but you should look up bands as Audio adam, as they have quite the same mentallity, at least I think so.
Robin's voice was in top shape here. His vocals are simply sublime.
He's never sounded better. Almost like he's using a slightly different technical method or something. Whatever he's doing, it's working!!
He sounded this way when I caught them in San Diego last September, and it was truly awe-inspiring to hear live. It seems his vocals have been impeccable for all of the touring behind Crack-Up :)
He has been working on it.
I think there's a really nerdy quality to his vocals, and I love that!
It definitely helps that he kicked smoking
This should be made into a live album STAT
The White Winter Hymnal to Ragged Wood transition is still one of my most favorite things
Isn't it?

If there was ever an 11/10 mix, it's this
I know man perfection. Also, check out Bon Iver's NPR concert. That thing's mixing is out of this solar system.
Sounds way to sterile and toppy to me...
Elias 333 does sterile mean too good ?
that transition from White Winter Hymnal to Ragged Wood... oh my....
My thoughts exactly, they pulled the same trick when I saw them in Holland back in 2017. GOOSEBUMPS.
I didn't realize it was happening . Wowow
They've done that since the start remember first hearing it at Glastonbury 2009 straight in to ragged wood unreal 🙌
Amazing
Heavens, I love this band.
That flawless transition from "Grown Ocean" into "I Am All That I Need" was done so effortlessly
Wish they added the ending of grown ocean instead of the beggining of I Am All That I Need so we could've had this transition on the record. Apparently the transition was planned all along.

cool!!!
Robins reaction to the false start for third of may was the purest thing I've ever seen
this is one of the best performances of Mykonos I've heard. I know robin said it's hard to sing. so freaking good
I felt he was struggling with "He doesn't know why"
my favourite one with blue ridge mountain, what a beautiful voice
dude on the bass is killing it with the harmonizing and backing vocals, jesus man, he might be the best backing vocalist of all time
Still misses Jesus Christ on the drums
He's so fundamental to the sound they bring, even moreso on their albums. They are definitely a team, even if the Robin takes the lead in live sets.
agree 100%. His choice of notes is outstanding...
Mike Mills too!
Totally agree!
one of the most important bands ever
that's an important comment
not really

You can tell a band is unconditionally adored when a false start gets the biggest ovation of the set so far.
(1:02:44)
I would false start any song if somebody from the crowd would shout that they liked my smile haha

The horn section is amazing.
I was honestly most impressed by the bass player/backup vocalist. Great show.
such a fantastic set. Crack Up was next level and sounds incredible live
I truly adore this band, lucky to have seen them twice. Nobody else comes close. Pure joy.
I've had the good fortune of seeing them three times since Crack Up came out and I think this is the best I've heard it sound live! Always great but this was clearly a very well-performed set.
This Mykonos performance juices me up, it's insane. I want to go to a FF concert so bad
Man the horns during Ōdaigahara were incredible. I am dying to see these guys in concert.
I love the guy who keeps shouting "Robin, i love you", lovely.
hey pitchfork, who was the mixing engineer on this? it's ridiculously good
agreed! so glad all their vocals could be heard really well in addition to the instrumentals
Best Fleet Foxes recording I've ever heard
Wow, yes.
I discovered pitchfork listening this new band Khrungbin, and the recording quality of their set was just soooooo clean. Sooooooo impressive.
Yupp.. just perfect.. it go deep inside
