I have fond memories as a kid of sleeping over my grandparents every few weeks. Sometimes we'd walk down to the local McDonald's, which had huge stained glass murals of various scenes in McDonaldland. I think but I might be mistaken that it had the older old man design for Hamburglar. My family explained that Captain Hook was named after a famous explorer named Captain Cook, so the Captain Crook creation made sense. But knowing about Captain Cook, I was really getting confused between the names “Hook” vs. “Crook.” Anyway, I had forgotten in more recent years where Captain Crook came from. Glad to get that put back together. Children’s commercials were so fun, I used to ask people which they liked better the “long” tv shows or the “short” ones. We also had Schoolhouse Rock, so it was easy to confuse advertising with pure entertainment/educational shows back then. 😊
I once wrote a paper for creative writing class in Hamburgler. It was 500 words, compete with punctuation, and every one of those words was "robble". You can only get away with shit like that once, but I got an A on the paper.
It used to be fun. I remember the play yards were great. The hamburger jail was my favorite. Now its stupid bland playyards. Not creative like it used to be. The happy meals were actually fun and we would sit the whole time filling out the games and stuff from the box. Todays boxes are bags sometimes but regardless, they suck. The food sucks (they took msg out since that fat lady sued them because she couldnt control herself and her habits) and youre lucky if your fries are cooked correctly and are hot; theyre usually undercooked or overcooked and always nast warm or cold and taste like cardboard. It has seriously gone downhill since the 80's and 90's man. the fry kids were my favorite tho!!!
Thank you for telling us the whole story behind the characters. In Germany we had never those commercials and most of the characters were only toys in the Kids Menu. Never had in mind that Grimace could be a bad guy in his former career.
For the ones who reads this just know this is only the beginning keep pushing, grinding, and fighting. Whatever it is in life you want to do to go after it life is to short. Life is a marathon not a sprint so go out there and live it up I hope all is well and goes well for you peace and one love.
After a while I just started tuning these commercials out on Saturday mornings and other cartoon times! Haha! I'm surprised nobody ever got upset about Grimace being an imitation of Barbapoppa with all of the similar characters!!
I grew up in the 70’s, I believe Hamburglar was always called that, the lone jogger was just for that commercial,I checked one of the first commercials for Mcdonaldland and he was called Hamburglar, but still good video and the magical Burger King would be a good one to do on mascots.
I think you're right. I grew up in the 80s and I remember the friendlier-looking redesigned Hamburglar still stealing burgers and only saying "Robble Robble" and not speaking in full sentences like they say he does in this video. I don't remember that original Hamburglar design at all, so he was definitely still stealing burgers in the 80s. These changes were more gradual than this video makes them out to be.
That was great, but you forgot to explain about the Professor (who was in several of the commercials you played). Also, Mac Tonight and Cosmo, the weird alien guy.
And why did Mayor McCheese sound like Ed Wynn? Did the ad execs watch Mary Poppins and Babes in Toyland too many times? (And was that John Goodman in a McDonald’s breakfast ad??)
Ronald McDonald is also a character McDonald's doesn't use anymore he got replaced by those sentient Happy Meal characters. I know many people hate them I personally don't care I don't like McDonald's food and Ronald McDonald was a mascot I always found creepy.
Watching these make me hungry! Could go for a cheeseburger now! Thanks Weird History Food for another interesting video! Much ♥️& all the best! Have a great day/night all!

I remember seeing those McDonald's ads while watching Saturday morning cartoons. Every so often my parents took me to McDonald's for their Happy Meals.
I used to have terrible nightmares about Ronald McDonald after seeing a very, very cheap impersonator at a fair. He'd chase me around, trying to kick me with those bigass boots... with the Fry Guys cheering him on all the while. To this day, if there's a giant Ronald sitting on the bench outside, I can't go in.
6:54 I fell head first inside of one of those things, cracked my head open. Same McDonalds, years before, I was sitting in my moms lap (ahh the 80s) in the front passenger seat and a drunk driver never hit the brakes before plowing into us after a bus stopped mid turn and had us waiting.
growing up in 90s/00s europe, McD ads never explained the lore that came w the characters they were just...there??? so yah thank you for this vid it was terrifying

Glad you guys created this channel. I'm much more interested in food history and pop culture food stuff than actual history.
🤣
I love your videos! Your narrator is the best! I am with you the hamburglar was my favorite character as a child.
Grimace the purple tongue always creeped me tf out.
Can’t remember if they were actually good or not but I used to love those McDonald’s VHSes growing up
At 8:13 - "that's when things went fry-ways". Priceless
I love how the narrator called the Lone Jogger a 70s serial killer. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
they arent wrong though
I would love to see a video on the history of mcnuggets, the history of the happy meal, or history of the Mcdonalds breakfast. love these videos!
Thank you for telling us the whole story behind the characters. In Germany we had never those commercials and most of the characters were only toys in the Kids Menu. Never had in mind that Grimace could be a bad guy in his former career.
This was great. As a GenXer, this brought back so many memories. 👍
I love this channel!
Here's a unsolicited tidbit of information. The Big Mac was invented here in Pittsburgh, PA. 😊😁
For the ones who reads this just know this is only the beginning keep pushing, grinding, and fighting. Whatever it is in life you want to do to go after it life is to short. Life is a marathon not a sprint so go out there and live it up I hope all is well and goes well for you peace and one love.
Great videos!! 😀
After a while I just started tuning these commercials out on Saturday mornings and other cartoon times! Haha! I'm surprised nobody ever got upset about Grimace being an imitation of Barbapoppa with all of the similar characters!!
I like McDonaldland i am born 1989 and i Love it
I grew up in the 70’s, I believe Hamburglar was always called that, the lone jogger was just for that commercial,I checked one of the first commercials for Mcdonaldland and he was called Hamburglar, but still good video and the magical Burger King would be a good one to do on mascots.
Those fry guys used to freak me out as a little kid! I still don't like looking at them...
Captain Crook gives me evil Patchy the pirate vibes
That was great, but you forgot to explain about the Professor (who was in several of the commercials you played). Also, Mac Tonight and Cosmo, the weird alien guy.
Lord I remember been scared of grimace and playing in the hamburger cage at McDonald's
Big Boy Burgers maybe!
Remember seeing McDonald's and other characters years ago. What happened to them now? Ronald McDonald is easily recognizable. Liking the content from the channel.
Lawsuits pretty much did in cartoony mascots.
Yesterworld has an in-depth video on the origins and retirement of many old McDonald's characters
Moon Mac was the coolest! I used to have this little toy car with him in it. I think I destroyed it trying to pry him out though.
what about the professor? to me, he was the least popular character, there for i was always sorta fascinated with him. i'd like to know more about him.
I used to have the displayed fry kids as toys, and had the VHS tapes of McDonald's adventures. Nostalgic video, WH.
Back when McDonalds was cool
I forgot about the oven mitt that was for Arby's. Now I wondering if that and hamburger helper hand are related 🤔

I fell head first inside of one of those things, cracked my head open.
“Future hamburger criminals can role play. By entering a crow’s nest style prison in officer Big Macs head. That’s some weird symbolism.”
That had me dying.
Love your channel
