Just finishing your past handful of Tolkien videos, thanks for all of your input. Even though the quality is sub-par on a handful, I feel that a matching set of Tolkien’s works will at least last 20-30 years on a shelf. Hopefully there will be a full run of incredible quality books from a publisher at some point in the next decade or two that we can all call the definitive Tolkien preservation collection.
Thanks for pointing out the differences in the quality of the three great tales books (Children of Hurin, Beren & Luthien, Fall of Gondolin) compared to the other books (LOTR, Hobbit, Silmarillion etc.) that all have the same dust jackets. You helped my avoid wasted money. It is odd these are so much poorer quality. Paperbound not cloth, glued not sewn, one colour text and no ribbon! I imagine Harper-Collins ' decided they would not sell as many copies and so to make 'economy of scale' work in their favour manufactured them cheaper, so the could make the same profit margin on a lower printrun.

Is the paper quality or binding any different on the first edition children of hurin hardback, compared to the edition that came in the great tales box set with Beren and Luthien and the Fall of Gondolin?
@@ckvanniekerk1527 If I am not mistaken and from what I can recall that box set is a Houghton Mifflin Harcourt imprint and is of the same quality and binding as the first edition Harper Collins books. The Great Tales box set also has a different design from the The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Boxed Set.
@@gunatilake Thanks! From further research it looks like the same glue binding and paper quality on both Editions of Children of Hurin. Which is a bit disappointing as the matching hardcover illustrated editions of the hobbit, silmarillion and unfinished tales are a bit better in terms of binding and having the ribbon etc. At least they will match and look good as a set on a bookshelf.

It's baffling that the box set had great paper and sewn binding and then the rest of the books got this sub-par treatment.
While unfortunate, note that this is just....a plain hardcover. If it were the higher-tiered slipcased edition, THEN I'd be more in agreement.
