I'm a 75-year-old alto player and went to sleep last night with my phone on my chest playing a Desmond album. To me, he'll always be The Man....

Always loved Desmond’s playing but my favourite alto player of all time was Jimmy Dorsey. I’m in my late 70s and back in the 60s I played both alto and tenor in a stage band. (Still have my Selmer *80 alto mouthpiece) Being from Toronto and having seen Bickert live I was amazed at his casual gum chewing effortless style.

I have many albums with Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck plus others, and had really wanted to see him live, but alas..... One of the most musical players, regardless of instrument.

Back in the 70s a high school buddy of mine was an aspiring jazz pianist ( later signed by A&M ) who joined the musician’s union as soon as he could. Ed Bickert’s number was in the union directory, so he called him up to ask him if he’d accompany him on a gig for $50. Ed said sure. True story.

Ed Bickert had put a Gibson PAF humbucker at neck position of his unique and only, legendary '65 Telecaster. It happened in 1967 at The Twelfth Fret shop in Toronto.
So this take, showing the previous single coil neck pickup, must be before 1967.
