  • Today, we bring justice to the poorly done review of mine in 2014 for Dragon Age: Inquisition by BioWare. I haven't played the game in 6 years, it is my first time with the DLC, and people insisted Trespasser would make it all worth it leaving us with one final question. Was this playthrough any different then what I had been preaching for years? Well, get cozy because we have a chonker of a video to answer all that and more.

    I personally still count Dragon Age: Origins as the best example of what an RPG should be. That game is timeless and I will play it over and over again... so so good. I want to get back to DA2 and DAI as I finished neither of those games... DA2 because it was repetitive and DAI because of the grind between story. I'm an addicted completionist and I just got lost in all the side content and repeated areas and it made me lose sight of the main story in the two sequels. DA:O just had the right ratio of side missions to main missions where I am hooked the whole time.

    • @rebellyanmagic6409
      @rebellyanmagic6409 3 года назад +12

      Yeah, and Origins' sidequest actually relate to the main quests and you get the epilogue cards depending on how you did (eg the quest to find that girl's brother in Redcliffe and get their family sword, and if you give her the max amount of gold she makes a better life for herself and eventually marries Bann Teagan). The side quests in DA:I exist to give you EXP/gold, they don't further the story.

      Nah man there's a lot of better RPGs out there, a lot of DAO is just simplifying stuff from older games or systems. There's a real pacing issue in the middle too, where it starts to feel like a slog, particularly if you don't disable the fade.

    • @humdrumfeast
      @humdrumfeast 3 года назад +5

      Real Name I disagree that there are lots of better rpgs out there, as I don’t know many games that actually allow you to roleplay such vastly different characters in each subsequent playthrough. I think the animations are a little clunky and the combat isn’t revolutionary, and I agree that the fade is a little irritating, but the lore and the ability to shape the story your way are almost unrivaled in games today.

    Dragon Age inquisition was actually my first game into the series. Before then, the only rpg I played was Skyrim, and was super elitist about it. But then, one day, my cousin introduces me to a game called Dragon Age Inquisition. I was a bit arrogant at first, constantly giving the game crap for not being like skyrim. But as I got further into the game, I discovered something absolutely beautiful. Unlike in Skyrim, I began to genuinely be interested and even care for all of the characters and story. Even the gameplay grew on me. Never before had a game instilled this within me. I was memorized by just how extensive the lore was, touched by the romance with Cassandra, invested with my bromance with Cullen, Dorian, and Iron Bull, and determined to save the world from Corypheus. Just when I thought I couldn't possibly be more invested, the Follower dlc came out, and I was left with an ending that had me absolutely hyped. Because of this, Dragon Age Inquisition easily became my favorite game after Skyrim.
    I had hoped that we would continue the adventure with the Inquisitor in DA4, though it doesn't look like that from the lastest trailer. Still, I'm hopeful that Bioware will once again make me fall in love with the world of Dragon Age.

      @jaythekid4809 3 года назад +2

      Oh, I'm sure we'll play as a new character in DA4. I just feel like the stories from DA4 and DA:I intertwine too much. Just imagine the build up to the Inquisitor and Solas facing off one last time. I also understand that it'd be difficult for the Inquisitor to come back, seeing how they lost their arm at the end of Follower. However, and this may be a bit far fetched, but what if Dagna could build a robotic arm that has unique functions depending on the class we choose. I'm not talking about anything too advanced of course. Just an unique invention of Dwarven engineering and the arcane arts, something Dagna seems very proficient with. Again, all of this is way too far fetched. I'm just thinking of a way to bring back the Inquisitor.

      Vivienne absolutely suffered from the production hell the game went through, but there's still hints that her original story was supposed to be much more interesting. One of Cole's lines about her is something about how "she would never go hungry again".
      I think that's really revealing. Being a Circle mage and getting into the court saved her from poverty, and she's terrified that if nobody needs the Circle system any more, she'll lose everything and be helpless and starving again. Hence her greatest fear is irrelevance.

      @trashtv6138 3 года назад +6

      Viviennes views were alot more logical than people give her credit for. It was extreme but not completely evil like people make out. She was very self serving, but she also had a great amount of care for mages and how the world viewed them, she didn't want them to just be looked at as monsters. At its core her idea of the circles is to allow mages to be trained correctly and not suffer the dangers of themselves or the people outside that fear them and would rather see them dead. Her delivery is what I think people didn't like, but I think the point of her ideas coming across so cold and brutal is her playing up to her iron lady persona.

    I'm playing through again now. Got to say the game has held up super well since it was released. I really enjoy the combat a lot more after the first play through as well. I think they struck a good balance between offering item customiztion through random drops and keeping resources in the game limited. I'm not bothered by the repetitiveness of the quest types - coming from an MMO there's been multiple times where I've appreciated that it's not really all that repetitive and that content completed is actually completed and I can't go back for another run. Also, it has to be noted that normal > hard > nightmare difficulties consitute three entirely different game experiences. On easy or normal that side content seems real peripheral and unnecessary but if you up the difficulty it becomes more important as you need the items and/or skill points and/or upgrades in order to move forward through more difficult encounters. After a few playthroughs over the past few years I think that if you don't try a nightmare playthrough you're cheating yourself - it's the only difficulty level that forces you to methodically and carefully make your way through the game instead of running over enemies like they're a joke - you might even find yourself using the 'tactical camera'.

    When it comes to your opinions on companions, I think a lot of it comes from having previously been invested in these preexisting characters (i.e Cassandra and Varric as you mentioned), and already having an emotional connection to them from previous games. Whereas, for me, Inquisition was and remains my only Dragon Age game so far (since I'm currently trying to 100% everything) and to me all the characters are new, and all of them to me are equally interesting

  • @gamingdevil800

    Inquisition gets a lot of love but I see it as a departure away from loads of heavy story focused content to tonnes of filler to fill out a game that was clearly rushed out the door. What's there story wise is great but I just wish all the mmo bloat wasn't there, it also feels like Bioware yet again stepping away from Dark Fantasy to High Fantasy. Origins and even 2 were grim worlds I never really got the same "Dark Fantasy" feel from this game like I did in Origins. One example of this is for instance Duncan (your gandalf if you will) straight up murdering a recruit during the grey warden trials which he never told you could kill you. There is plenty more examples I could list off and it's even the straight up evil stuff you could do as a player like letting a demon possess Connor in redcliffe for sex, exp etc. I'm worried about the future though as the narrative director for DA4 seems to be yet again moving away from the dark fantasy roots.

Several of the areas were gorgeous to look at, but had very little to actually do (looking at you, HIssing Wastes). I would have much rather had them remove several areas and beef up what they did have, especially Val Royeaux. I'm still mad about how little of that city we got to see! They were too influenced by Skyrim, and by trying to improve upon DA2. Now, all of us longtime DA fans are just hoping that those that remain at Bioware have enough leverage to push back on EA execs insisting upon multiplayer and a "long revenue tail" (i.e., microtransactions). Hopefully, Jedi Fallen Order opened EA's eyes a bit.

    The overall story was enjoyable to me, truly. The problem is that it got obscured by unbelievable shallow side quests and horrible combat. I know some people enjoyed the combat in this game, many in the successor Bio forums loved it, and many of us hated it, I've always been very vocal about it being a MMO style combat in a single player game, and had no place there. We know the game was meant to be an MMO initially after all, according to reports. Also design decisions and technical limitations. Graphics might have aged well, but combat did not.
    What made me like the game more was Trespasser. A truly well done plot heavy DLC, that had its issues for being "paid content setting up for the upcoming game" which is kinda scummy, but taking that out, it was probably the best DLC they've done so far.
    I know that if Bioware truly want it, they have it in them, they can still deliver. They just need to set aside the money schemes, the bullshit, put their shit together with the higher ups and the leadership and do a good game. It's not only EA to blame, they gotta be accountable for what they do too. I wish them the best as always, but I also got burned far too many times, not holding my breath for many companies these days, the potential however is there imo.

      The combat for me was easily the worst error DAI makes. I can even take the grindy stuff, if they'd had just made combat more like combat. everyone wailing on on enemy that mostly just stands there and takes it, or auto targets you with a projectile is as dull as you can possibly make the floaty hack n slash, combat with the worst AI enemies I've ever encountered. Yes, you must be right. It's exact;y the kind of combat in MMOs and a big reason I can't play them. And how can you screw up archery? Buy just holding a button down and auto aim assist arrows pew pew from your bow. Downright awful, fucking lame af really. I honestly can't see how anyone could stand that combat for any length of time. And I know everyone is different, I'm not saying it should be made for just little ol me. But MMO style combat is not the reason why people get into MMOs. So why give us that in a SP game? E\R

I played an hour or two of this game, chose an archer and spent that first hour holding right trigger, popping arrows at enemies, occasionally throwing in an aimed shot and if someone got too close, do the backflip shot. That's I think half of the archery active abilities in that tree. You can't switch weapons mid combat so I couldn't do some long range damage then shred them with daggers when they got close. I looked around at the mage abilities to see if there was a healing spell I could grab and didn't see one as I kept running out of options. Perhaps a bug was causing mobs to respawn on top of me which led to constant combat and obeeeuae of potions? Thanks so much.

And, honestly, if you have The Inquisitor recruit the horsemaster and clear out the Rebel Mages, Rogue Templars, and Mercenary Fort in The Hinterlands, you have enough Power to get you through two or three story missions before everything you do in the Western Approach tops you off for the rest of the game.

    I'm glad you mentioned the dragon battles, absolutely the best part of the game imo. Everything from the creature design to the music is just so perfect. And don't even get me started on the sound design, I still get chills when those guttural roars echo through my speakers. And I absolutely love that you even gain some fame from being a dragon hunter and will get special dialouge/cutscenes with certain characters from killing them.

    It's really interesting to watch in-depth reviews like this one. Inquisition was the first DA game I played and I utterly loved it. It inspired me to go back and play through DAO and DA2, both of which I also loved. However, they also both felt more simple, linear and much less fleshed out than DAI, even despite the range of great choices you could make as a good/evil character in DAO. For me, Inquisition created a beautiful, detailed world with interesting companions and wonderful quests and I had no reference to compare it to. I think coming from a perspective of someone who doesn't have a long background in video games and RPGs, playing through it was truly magical.

    Wicked Eyes Wicked Hearts really, really impressed me. It's almost entirely dialogue driven and all the ways it can play out and how it impacts the story as far down the road as Trespasser just on the decisions you make, or don't make, is really cool. I always look out for similar missions in other character-driven RPGs but to date I haven't found one that executes on the idea as well as DAI. Even TW3, which is twice the game DAI is and one of the best ever made, doesn't have an isolated standalone quest that can compete with it in terms of running the gauntlet of dialogue and intrigue.

    When I first played this game, I rushed through with barely any side content at all, I mean, not even most of the companion quests. I was 14 at the time and expected more since I feel like I fondly remembered my dad and brothers beating the first two games and then finally beating them myself, and then beating the first one like 6 times and the second game 4 times, at around that time leading up to the release of Inquisition. Around four years later, 2018ish, I loaded the game back up and decided to do everything in the game on Nightmare difficulty. And Honestly, I loved so much of the game, the side content even, the DLC (Playing as an Eleven Mage, Jaws of Hakon is amazing. And I love the Dwarves so The Descent was great too). The ending of the base game is weak overall but Traspressor gives the game a great ending. If Dragon Age Origins is 10/10, Dragon Age 2 is like 6 - 7 out of 10, then Inquisition is a solid 7 - 8 and peaks at a 9 at points, Jaws of Harkon / Companion quests and the right Role played Character makes a big difference.

      You didnt have to do all the content. But that content was core to the gameplay. Matty considered the content a chore as well because he didnt want to do -any- of it. He just wanted to see the main story online. (even skipping companion quests) Yeah at that point the game does have a lot of ''bloat'', but that 'bloat' is what most rpg-gamers would consider ''gameplay content''.
      If you dont enjoy the content thats not automatically the same as the content being a chore in and out of itself, rather then -a chore to you- specifically.

      It is worse. Origins had a realistic, very slow combat, but every hit connects with enemies, they have a lot of realistic animations too. For DA2 and DAI they went for the super flashy in your face fantasy style, to attract "the wider audience". I absolutely hated it. Mage is the best because it works well, archery is super crap too.

I definitely enjoyed the 20 or so hours I spent with the game when it first came out, but it was one of those things where I just got disinterested in the moment and moved on. There is a lot to love about the game, but I think it's definitely true that it is a bit too long for its own good. I did just pick up the GOTY edition on sale though, so maybe I'll finally manage to give the game its due. It is nice to have such a big Bioware game in my library that is mostly new for me. Maybe I'll squeeze it in before Cyberpunk comes out.

    Most people are giving a lot of love to Origins, but honestly, I like Inquisition's story much more. I like how Inner Circle missions are integrated into the main plot; I like the progression of Inquisition as a fraction from the beginning of the game to Trespasser. It might be due to age, but in Origins - you mostly find out about characters backstories by talking to them for HOURS, instead of it being smoothly integrated into the plot. Even the story itself is very segmented and feels unrelated mission-to-mission. Like, most locations have this immediacy like "if we don't do anything, the Tower would face the Right of Annulment!" but even if you go there last, it would still be the same. I know that Inquisition has a big problem with its MMO-esk side quests, but if you don't 100% the game - you could get the Power by just doing the better ones. In comparison, the DA:O has better side quests but some actual story missions are lacking. For example - the Orzammar quests in Origins are one of the most boring ones in my opinion, right on the lines with the Dalish Clan mission. Yeah, there are a few good twists, but the missions themselves are just SO tedious. And, unlike in the Inquisition, the dialogues are mostly static - even if you are supposedly in a hurry. In Orzammar, the entire mission consists of these dialogues and Dwarven politics that I, honestly, do not care about.
