Winch recovery of a GMC pickup, stuck in sand dunes

We came across a GMC pickup ttuck stuck in soft sand.
The four wheel drive had failed. We winched it back a little until it was moving by itself. However it became stuck again, so we gave it a second pull.

Based on your experience, what winch rating do you recommend?

For the recoveries we do, I would look at 12,000-12,500 lb. More than that, the winch usually has the same motor but is geared with a larger ratio, that is to say, slower. Smaller than that, you find yourself using a snatch block more often.

a mere air-down for the tires could have saved the truck from getting stuck.
