Its funny, I used to work at the Boys and Girls Club in Ottawa where Manny's whole family went (and some worked there too). It breaks my heart that this boy was in this situation. The kid had talent on the court and on a track, he was much smarter than I think he let on.
He actually asked if I could play some rap music on the little amp that we got donated to the club, so I put on clean versions of rap songs so that it was somewhat appropriate for the club. I got chewed out by the manager of the club, and he literally told me to play Lady Gaga instead. These kids dont listen to Lady Gaga and it was the most alienating thing to try and make low income immigrant kids have to listen to white washed Lady Gaga songs that they don't identify with at all.
Im happy to see that Manny went on and continued rapping on his own time. It hurts when you cant protect these kids like we could at the club, they were like children to me, and the more troubled they seemed, the more I cared for their wellbeing. I still remember their names 8 years later, and I check in to see where they are at in their lives. The Akol's were the first names I typed in and it kills me to see Manny is no longer with us. So much talent, the kid should be enjoying his success right now.
I see a lot of others kids from the BGC in the video here, and they were just as talented and intelligent. I hope they can continue in the music industry or whatever industry, and I hope they can grow and leave the drama of Britannia behind them one day and live prosperous and happy lives. The pain of losing a loved one or friend will have a negative effect on everyone you've ever touched with your spirit, especially your mom. Keep grinding out there Ritchie St, I hope all of you reach your goals one day. Everybody is on different timelines, and your time will come, just be patient and ALWAYS be moving forward and bettering yourself.
