You don't need to worry about getting the whole horseradish root out of the ground. Save the crown and replant about a thumb depth deep, a new root will start and the original will return.

Try giving your chickens some grit to have for their entertainment n for their gizzards. Grits is cheap (can use sand from a beach) so maybe they’ll leave the feed a lone.
