How long would a grade 3 with surgery take to fully heal? Like Brock Purdy 49ers football Quarterback player for example?

After a surgical reconstruction of the ligament, recovery (that is, new ligament as strong as it can get, and thumb as close as it can get to full strength/flexibility/capacity) will typically take between 1 and 2 years. However, there are many steps along that journey, and many milestones which make the recovering patient feel more 'normal' again. For example, the repaired thumb will usually be immobilised in a cast or splint full time for about the first 6 weeks post-op, and the change to wearing the splint only part-time, using the un-splinted thumb for light activities, can be simultaneously wonderful and terrifying! On average, patients will be cleared to use the thumb for work and daily activities at about 12 weeks post-op. As soon as professional sport is brought into the equation, everything changes! They have much greater pressures and expectations, and will often take risks with their bodies much earlier than would usually be recommended. Also, they have access to the very best in surgical, medical and therapy support. I have seen professional footballers here in Australia (playing AFL, not American football) return to competitive play within 3-4 weeks post-op, with a protective splint taped onto the thumb. May be different for a quarterback if it is his throwing hand though...
      Good question, cheers!

I got my surgery in 2020. It took me 2 months to get to where I can fully stretch my arm out and feed myself with my dominant hand. And full recovery after a year and 2 months. But it still hurts from time to time.

Hi Renzo; typing is a pretty low risk activity for a thumb UCL injury. I would certainly still recommend a splint, as thumbs just love to get bumped or wrenched at any opportunity! All the best

Hello! Thanks for watching the video - I hope it was helpful for you. These injuries can vary greatly, from very mild to very severe. It is hard to know what risk you have without seeing your thumb 🙃. If possible, I would definitely recommend you see a good doctor or physiotherapist who can examine your thumb, maybe refer for an X-ray, and then provide you with some appropriate treatment. That might be some protection in a splint or brace; it may mean seeing a surgeon if the injury is more severe. Here's hoping you have a very minor injury which recovers rapidly!
