I'm surprised the Dogue de Bordeaux isn't on this list. They often don't make it to their 8th birthday and it's not uncommon for them to die after their 6th. Quite telling too that most of these breeds are heavy built.

I was extremely fortunate to have my pit/lab mix for over 15 years. He was a big boy, weighing in at 110, but he was warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. I am also a big believer in meat for my canine children, and cooked for him every night of his life. I wish it could have been for another 15 years.

Pits and labs are both relatively healthy breeds, specially the pit. Mixed breeds live longer than purebred dogs too, they have healthier genetics on average. Your boy had a bit of help from his genetic lineage there. Pitties are known to live long lives when properly cared for, they don't have a ton of serious breed specific diseases

I absolutely adore irish wolfhounds, I still remember meeting one of them the first time when I was a kid and it left an impression on me, all the others I’ve met over the years have been the same. I just don’t think I can handle such a low lifespan, so even though it’s one of my dream dogs I probably won’t own one in the near future. I’m hoping that with responsible breeding in the next +20 years it will improve, same with these other breeds.

I lost my first Irish Wolfhound to cancer at the age of just 4 years and two weeks. My next Irish Wolfhound/Newfoundland lived to be 10 years and 2 weeks old. My next Irish Wolfhound lived to the age of 7 years and ten months. My first three Irish Wolfhounds and Wolfhound/mixes were all males. My current Irish Wolfhound/Dane will be 4 this June and is very healthy. Females live longer than males and the fact that my Maeve isn't a pure breed I hope adds a few years as well. I have always loved the giant breeds.

Glad to hear Bernie is almost 14 years of age and is still going strong. With the average lifespan of a dog being somewhere between 10 to 13 years, 13 years, 11 months and counting is impressive. No doubt a large part is due to a good, caring owner. And, as we know, genetics also play a factor, which is why list like this exist and are important. I was very surprised to learn that the Rhodesian Ridgeback has a life expectancy similar to a Saint Bernard's.

  • @TexSupport

You touched on the Shar-pei. Yes genetics pay a huge part to longevity. Strong bloodlines can live to 14-15.
As you said, overbreeding is too blame. The higher the "cute" factor i.e. excessive wrinkles are usually genetic nightmares.
Look at the original shar-pei from China, they have minimal wrinkling.

    • @axce8783
      @axce8783 Год назад

Western dogs aren't supposed to be excessively wrinkly. Unfortunately the US standard fails to specify that excessive wrinkling past maturity is undesirable. It's all to do with the HAS2 gene and how many CVNs the dog has. Breeders know not to breed dogs with too high a CVN. Unfortunately there's still the handful of unethical breeders producing poor examples that suffer.

Obsessively breeding for cosmetic qualities and size has real consequences to those we purport to love. We are the sole determinants of our dog breed's future, and too many of us are obsessed with negligable cosmetic qualities like color, shrinking our dog's gene pool because we only want that "english cream" or that "lilac tri". We are also too obsessed with size.
With the rhodesian ridgeback, the issue is their ridge is actually a form of spina bifida. It was one of the big scandals of the show community a few years ago, but everyone has forgotten. I'm not surprised if breeding for spina bifida shortened their life span.
For the shar pei, reckless breeding is still continuing because of social media. They are a mess, and are continuing to be made even more of a mess because now people want dilute colors that shrink their genetic diversity and come inherent with autoimmune issues and are also associated with lower lifespans. Blue and liver genes are both independently associated with lower lifespan, and now we have many people breeding for lilac which is an unholy mix of the 2 lifespan lowering colors.
Great Danes used to have an even shorter lifespan, but breeders actually worked together to raise it! Which is great news that something can be done about these problems if people decide to do the responsible thing. Size obsession is definitely an issue, but its possible to have reasonably large dogs and maintain a good lifespan. IMO, if we start purpose breeding again instead of leaving everything to looks, we can probably fix a ton of our issues with extra large breeds, because it forces their size to be reigned in from excessive to work-ready.
The english bulldog is a master class on what not to do, and is an opposite case to the great dane, where breeders seem to do whatever they can to harm the dog rather than help it.
What I'm surprised not to see is the doberman, as it has been developing quite a reputation for low lifespan, with projection that all doberman will be affected by the potentially fatal heart condition DSM by 2039.

I think for large breed dogs (60-100lbs), about 12-13 years should be the goal. My German Shepherd/Bernese Mtn Dog mix, who was about 95 lbs in his prime, was almost 16 when he passed away last year. I have a malamute puppy now who should get to about 85-90lbs., and his breeder said the average lifespan of their dogs is about 14 years.

I was curious about where you got your numbers from. The RR surprised me, much as it did you. I had overheard that the breed might have been starting to have issues but this surprises me. OTOH I also was speaking to a number of people that said the average lifespan of the Australian Shepherd is now down to just over 8 years. All the more reason for me to look at different people's sources.
Also, on size = shorter lifespan, this seems to apply to a number of mastiffs with quick growth stages. The LGDs like the Anatolian shepherd, Kangal, CAS, Estrela etc, generally don't experience these same issues to this same degree. Especially not from their COO. The breeding parameters are different in their COO perhaps. The closed studbook methods are not used, and there is a certain amount of natural selection taking place that Westerners would consider cruel.
Any average lifespan under at least 10 years is atrocious to me.

Hey Z, thanks for another interesting video. I wanted to bring up a dog that over the last few years has had some misinformation concerning its lifespan.. The Dogue de Bordeaux has a very short lifespan as well but over the last couple of years some people have been making claims that they live longer than the majority of them actually do. Here is a clip from Wikipedia with the information coming straight from the Dogue de Bordeaux Society of America.
"While larger breeds of canines tend to have shorter life expectancy, the life expectancy of the Dogue is still shorter than even breeds of comparable or larger size. According to data collected by the Dogue De Bordeaux Society of America, the average lifespan of the breed is 5 to 6 years. A veterinary database in the UK showed similar figures. In the American survey, the oldest dog in the record was 12 years old. However, the acting dog who played Hooch in the 1989 film, Turner and Hooch, died at the age of 14. The Society is actively recording dogs that are 7 years old or older to celebrate the longer-lived dogs."

But it is sad to talk to folks about my breed and hear people say they don't want the breed because they heard they only last 6 or 7 years. In the end I'd rather have 8 years with a Dane than 15 with a miniature poodle - lol (sorry poodle folks: just kidding - I do love the standard ones, though).
