The monsters Inc DVD has a "sound only" option so you can watch the movie with just the sounds. Its very fascinating and you can hear the layers and layers of sounds they put into the enviroment.
I don't remember this at all, maybe it wasn't available on the version from my region
@@Vitorio582 Possibly! It was on the original DVD release. I think it was actually an option on the "Set up" menu and not like a special feature.
Same option appeared on the 2-Disc "Toy Story 2" DVD.
That reminds me of some Looney Tunes DVD releases where you could hear Bugs Bunny cartoons with an optional soundtrack-only audio track, or only music and sound effects combined. Basically a fandub heaven inside those discs. Treg Brown is God.
wow, I've gotta try that
I never really thought about how fantastic the sound design was. You are totally right. I think it was at its best in Wall-E.
Great choice but I lean more towards Ratatouille, all that clangs, chops, cuts and sizzle very satisfying!
Gary Rydstrom didn't work on Wall-E, it was his mentor, Ben Burtt, who worked on it.
@@AgsmaJustAgsma thanks but, it's still great.
@@hunmiliengtipi9218 Wall-E's sound design is amazing, but personally I still think the first Toy Story movie still gets the edge over any Pixar movie, even the likes of Finding Nemo and Ratatouille, the latter of which being basically an ASMR session disguised as an animated movie.
@@AgsmaJustAgsma Indeed - Ben Burtt is at the top of the cast list for Wall-E
Another perfect example of sound design is from Toy Story 2, where an old man fixes Woody, such an auditory experience!
Absolutely!! It's so satisfying.
Toy Story is one of those movies I've seen so many times since childhood that I could probably not only quote the entire thing, but also tell what music/sound effects are playing during any given scene. It's so engrained in my head, still fresh in my memory, that even the sound design still sticks out to me.
Same
I'm the same with Wallace and Gromit.
I guess this is why I really love the scene when all the toys assemble for the staff meeting. We are introduced to them for the first time and yet just from the sound design, like you said Andrew, defines their personality without any need for dialogues! It's great film making.
A great RUclipsr once said that films are made by cinematographers, set and sound designers, editors. Films are made by filmmakers.
It's also a great work around to the fact that many of the toys can barely move. They couldn't be given as much character in the usual ways of animation so sound filled that gap.
My favorite moment is during the final chase when they lose the truck and are stranded in the middle of the street and you only hear a single mourning dove. It's both realistic and perfectly descriptive of the emotion of the moment
I never noticed the sound design around Buzz's arc before that's incredible
I could tell the sound design was unique when I was just a kid
Ok, so I wasn't the only one. Yeah, even when I first saw it at age 4 or 5, the way the film sounded felt so unlike anything else. And it's particular sound has never been replicated in ANY film that's come out since. Not even its 3 sequels. _Toy Story_ 2, 3, &, 4 all sound MUCH more conventional. The original _Toy Story_ was the only one with that incredibly unique, very particular, sound design...
@@dildonius yeah before I knew sound design was a thing I could tell this was different
Gary Rydstrom is the man.
I remember one of the guys at Pixar telling a funny story about how when they screened Luxo Jr. for the first time, everyone in the audience was going wild seeing the animation, which kinda upset them because all the work they put into the sound design was being drowned out XD
At a quick guess, it's looks like the height above the floor of the camera is being used to change the scale of the current event. The closer to the floor causes the camera to look up, skewing the angles
UNDERRATED SOUND DESIGN ON AN UNDERRATED RUclips CHANNEL
Love this!! I’m legally blind and so sound design means so much to me! Pixar is consistently among the very best at this! Also, thank you for helping articulate the difference between realistic and believable. :)
Every video on this channel is so well done, I don't know how you keep up the consistency.
Gosh Listening to that intro I could practically taste my Cheerios and feel my high chair. The noises themselves are all so tactile
I thought this would be about the voice acting. There's so much energy behind the voice acting in Toy Story that makes you want to animate the scene. There's nothing like the "YOU. ARE. A. TOY!" argument from Pixar anymore. I think their passion for energetic performances comes from them using audio from Turner and Hooch in their test footage which made them cast Tom Hanks.
God, what a good video. That point about the sound of clattering plastic when Buzz falls was so on point, I really almost starting crying.
One more reason why it is one of the greatest films ever made.
Truly a collaborative effort. The nuances of filmmaking never stop amazing me.
Gary Rydstrom is as effective as he is because he IS A STORYTELLER just as much as anyone else at Pixar...which is why he’s moved on occasionally to directing animation (the Pixar shorts LIFTED and Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation)..! He’s always realized that your ears connect to you brain JUST AS STRONGLY as your eyes do! He’s very deservedly won Seven Oscars and has been nominated for more than a dozen others and, outside of Ben Burtt is probably one of the only sound designers that have name recognition
Wow amazing video. Never thought about Toy Story's sound design. Thanks so much!
We stan Rydstrom in this house. As much as I love Toy Stories 3 & 4, there's something a little lacking without him on board.
I really appreciate how much work you put into spreading appreciation of genuinely underrepresented factors in film, like sure Toy Story has been talked about a million times but I've never heard more than a passing remark about the sound design. Another great video!
You should compare the sounds in the first Toy story to the others and why the locations seem bigger in the first that all the locations in the fourth and third
Love your videos! That was a great take on the sound design.
Very well said!! They really did an awesome job with Toy Story and ever since!
As someone that makes Pixar and animation video essays, this was a unique and genius take on how great Toy Story in terms of the choices made for basically a start up studio making their first film. Bravo once again!
Part of why Toy Story still feels real and tactile despite the aged graphics
Graphics don’t age. If it was good then, it’s good now
this was interesting, thanks for making and sharing
This is a nice break from my Caretaker binge.
great video, sound is so important
Great video! I love Toy Story
Utterly brilliant analysis
0:09 Best sound for me
Sure toy story sounds cool, but have you ever listened to the entire finding nemo soundtrack and had the movie play out in your head?
AMAZING AMAZING video ! Incredibly informative and engaging stuff man . Keep it up
Great video as always Andy ;).
@@totoro5874 Sorry, I'll see myself afterwards.
😂😂
Good stuff. Can never forget Sound Design.
Dude pls make subtitles for not native speakers! PLSS
Interestingly, ever since I first watched this waaaaaay back when it first came out on VHS, one of the things that ALWAYS stuck out to me was the way it sounded. Even though I was like 3, 4, 5 years old, the film didn't sound like anything else out there. Combined with being the only full 3D animated film out there too, and it just always seemed so incredibly unique and almost uncanny with the sound design. I think that went SO far in selling these characters as actual toys, and in a way that none of the other 3 films ever really did. Neither _Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3,_ or _Toy Story 4_ sound QUITE the same as the original _Toy Story._ And frankly, don't really look or feel the same either. Maybe its because by 2, CGI had become much more refined (it especially had by 3 & 4), and maybe its because the original was breaking new ground, but there really just isn't any movie out there quite like the original _Toy Story._
You couldnt have said that any better. Incredible analysis! I knew some stuff about the importance of sound design and how it should be executed but the detail with Buzz just hit me like a train!
This video is inspired me to grab my old copy of monsters Inc and ripped the widescreen version of the movie to my computer purely for the sound effects track. I would have just played the movie off of the disc itself if it wasn't scratched to hell but at least the contents were fully rippable. Heck, I've also been wanted to watch the movie with the audio commentary so this will be a good chance to do that as well.
I've been watching Toy Story since I was 4 years old and I have never once gave this serious thought. Thank you so much for allowing me to appreciate yet another aspect of one of my favorite movies.
Wow one of your best videos! Please make more videos about Pixar films!
This video introduced me to a whole new world of filmmaking I've been trying to understand for years. Thank you!
I love your channel because you mainly use Cooper Black as your main font
Wall-E actually proved to me that Pixar are true film makers not just ‘cartoonists’ simply by its utterly outstanding use of sound (or lack there of). Animation know and use the advantages of what properly crafted soundscapes can bring to a film. I’ve seen Pixar continually put big Hollywood type movies to shame with the organic and visceral use of sound design, music and foley effects.....I think it’s because they appreciate the subconscious impact of sound on our emotions....after all that’s what a movie is, a story designed to resonate with its listeners on a spiritual and inner intellectual level.
Something new and wonderful I never realized about one of my top favorite films of all time! Thank you for this! What a gem!
I think Miyazaki also nailed sound design in his films (I mean I guess he don't do it himself, but knowing how much of a control freak he is you can be sure he supervised it). In fact, I'd say that as much as other Ghibli productions are also good in that regard, his films in particular always are the most memorable to me in how they sound, with probably my favourite of all being any sound made by the moving castle. It just manages to feel both like a crazy contraption and as a sort of living being.
0:14 2001 reference? or at least inspired by?
In Wall-E made a cockroach cute.
Thank you very much for this
The trex roar is the greatest sound in cinema
ROFS I love your videos!!!!!!!!

Wow that was a great video! Im a huge fan of toy story and have seen it so many times but never gave much thought to how much the sound shaped its feel. Looking forward to more of your videos!
Another amazing video, Andrew. Thanks for makin em!
Will you make your own class of sound design? *PLEASE*
Well, I've learned alot! I'm trying to get into sound mixing and this really helped me out!
Wow, I'm blown away by these attention to details both from your side and Pixar!
Cool.
How do you design audio?
*I don't have any knowledge of this.*
Great video as always, RO!
That was fascinating, thank you !
what a great video

Thoughts on Tenet
Great sound
So true, though Toy story 4 have better technology, its just lack that depth in story telling trough the setting. Most of the scenes were boring camera work, but what do you expect from a project made to milk the audience of the originals
If people walked into Toy Story 1 with the same negative attitude, then they would also have a difficult time enoying it too.
You see what you want to see at the end of the day.
