  • I was recently in Hamburg with my mother and her sister (my aunt). There was a harbour festival in Hamburg at the time. It is said to be the biggest harbour festival in the world (according to the Hamburg city website). But we did not come for the festival, but for the musical 'The Lion King'. It has been running since 2001 at the Stage Theater im Hafen, which is built - as the German words 'Im Hafen' suggest - in the Port of Hamburg. You have to go there by boat from the other shore. If you have tickets for the musical, you can go on the boat for free.
Of course, filming and photography were not allowed during the show, but I will describe it as best I can for you. Everyone probably already knows Disney's The Lion King, so let's focus on what makes the musical itself special.
The musical's greatest feature is the interaction between the actors and the life-size animal puppets. Whether it's a giraffe, an antelope, a cheetah, an elephant or lions, the musical makes the audience experience the animals as convincingly as if they were actually sitting on the African savannah. In The Lion King, the auditorium also becomes a stage and the audience is directly involved in the action. The musical about Simba the lion thus brings 25 animal species to life.
Timon the meerkat, Pumba the warthog, Zazu the rhino and, of course, the lions Mufasa, Scar, Nala and Simba the lion cub are half-human, half-animal puppets. But the detailed costumes make it easy to immerse yourself in the characters' world. Zazu in particular and the lions Scar and Mufasa are equipped with sophisticated, moving pulling technology, which makes the puppets look even more alive and realistic. Even the savannah grass on the dancers' heads comes alive for the audience in the Disney musical.
The sumptuous and well-known music of The Lion King is also one of the reasons to attend the musical. The 17 musicians of the orchestra play more than 100 instruments to provide the typical African rhythms.
On our second day in Hamburg, we took a tour of the harbour and the St-Pauli area. We went to the street where the Beatles debuted. The original Beatles performed regularly in different clubs in Hamburg from 1960 to (19)62.
The guide told us a little about how the Beatles behaved in their youth. They were actually quite difficult to control: for example, they poured liquids on passers-by from their flat in Hamburg. Mostly water, but they also poured drinks and urine.
The guide also mentioned another incident: during the Beatles' performance at the Ernst Merck Hall in Hamburg (19)66, John Lennon appeared on stage wearing only his underwear and a toilet seat around his neck to protest against the poor conditions in which the band was forced to perform. In the early 1960s, the band played in clubs for long periods without proper breaks. The conditions were sometimes unhygienic and the band members were frustrated that they were not given enough respect.
Our guide told us that there was another explanation for this situation: John Lennon was late to the stage because he spent a lot of time with beautiful women in bars. One time his manager was looking for him and found him in a toilet stall. He wasn't alone there. You understand, I think. The manager decided to pour water on both of them to get them to leave. Being completely wet, John Lennon decided to dress only in his underwear. He pulled out the toilet seat and wore it like a necklace.
And now for my favourite part of the trip: after the tour, we had lunch at "Teigtasche", the only Lithuanian restaurant in Germany. The food was very tasty and authentic. The only downside was that the waitress did not speak Lithuanian. Only the chefs speak Lithuanian, but they are in the kitchen and don't communicate with the customers. If you don't live very far from Hamburg, I highly recommend going there (not only for the restaurant).
Have you ever been to Hamburg and maybe you want to go there? Write in the comments section. I would love to know
