Amazon finally released their Echo Frames smart glasses and these are very interesting. These glasses take a slightly different approach and rather than showing a display to look at, these leverage the use of audio. In this video, I dive into how these glasses work, who would buy them, and what the future of smart glasses looks like.

Some additional review notes:
PHYSICAL TOUR:
Buttons
Touch pads
Mics
Speakers
Charger
Lenses go here
Don’t close all the way
Audio test
Speaker sounds like my MP3 player from 2005
Absolutely no bass at all
Mic test
Noise bleed test
Battery test
Can you hear it in a loud environment?
Notes:
Status light is barely visible on frames (works well in my opinion)
Sound is pretty bad
Sounds weird at first - hard to identify where it is coming from (very unnatural)
VIP notifications allow you to mute notifications from people or apps
Touch pad was a good idea
Double press action button to mute mic and notifications
Notifications are nice. Easily the most sleek way to get notifications. You never need to look anywhere, and they are super comfortable
Glasses are very comfortable. I forget I have them on sometimes
Alexa always tries to get the last word in with a “did you know” - then tries to plug something or get you to buy stuff on Amazon
CONCLUSION: Will these be a big hit and see wide ranging adoption? Probably not. I cannot find a photo of Jeff Bezos wearing these, so Amazon probably does not think these are the future. This must just be something that could be fun to have, and to make Amazon look like big innovators of the future.
Originally I thought I would hate these, and at first, I kind of did. But after using them for a bit, there were some real advantages to using them.
Overall, a good first step in the direction of smart glasses

So what are your thoughts? Will these be a boom or a bust?
bust
Bust
Definitely a bust, just like the Amazon Fire Phone.
What ever happened to google specs? I don’t think these will make it honestly
I think that they are great products and a clever way of delivering notifications and phone calls, but I don't know if they'll take off (as they're not made by Apple). The mic sounds just like a phone call though. Great reviews!
I work at an Amazon wharehouse and we aren't allowed to wear headphones to listen to music or audiobooks. I'm going to buy this and use their own technology to stick it to them.
Smart
Lol same here.
Bro I do this too lol but if you want an even better experience, pair it with your apple watch to watch youtube videos on it. The day goes way faster lol
@@danielordonez1643hell yeah
How do you feel about them? Did they work well?
Cmon now Mike. You don't look that bad in glasses. Keep your head up 😁
Hahaha thanks. Glasses are one of those things that look weird on anyone who doesn't normally wear them, but after a few weeks it looks weird to not wear them

dreamed of living a life like that as a kid now we can. touch phone wirh face calls, watch tv on watches and now these glasses etc
Smart glasses that automatically adjust focus using Lidar for close and distant viewing. I’d buy them tomorrow!
Did you?
@@lethequin Well glasses like that are not available yet. The day they are issued for sale will be the day I order them.
@@seastnanseastnan7765 have you seen the dial vision glasses? They are super cheaply made but each lens can be adjusted from -6 to +3 by turning the dials. It's a great proof of concept. What you dream of might not be as far off in the future as you think.
That mic sounds better than a lot of high end earbuds
Idk if it actually sounds better imo his voice sounds deeper but that might be triggering you to think its "better" sounding, it doesn't sound like his natural projected voice but it may sound more natural to him because how we process the sound of our own voice. For women and men with higher pitched voices this might be better, but if you already have a deep voice or "smoker voice" it may sound more gargled. This was also only done in his studio so ideal settings imagine walking outside on a windy day or at a restaurant.
Jeff Bezos
Mike please pin this comment, it’s true.
Sony xtraBass, whenever someone calls me, I actually get compliments because I only ever pick up calls on those earbuds, and I found that they don't pick up driving ambiance which is nice because driving wind noise is horrendous
Edit* I picked a wireless 16hr pair for $30 on sale, and I bought them cause I enjoyed the wired set when they came out for $60 a few years ago
Thank you
They make you look even smarter :)
Thanks. Maybe I'll just wear these when I go to meetings so people take me seriously
For someone who's not allowed to listen to music at work, this could be very useful. I also like the phone call function, I like to call someone while I clean, I normally do that one handed
I don't get why they ban music at schools or work, I mean, it's way more productive
@@3npitsu992 you can add this to the list of nonsense rules and laws that we live with, but yes music increases productivity and morale
I work at Amazon and plan on buying these
I just got a pair 3 days ago. I like them so far and I’m still learning about them. I’m a licensed optician and was intrigued. I think it would be great to have more styles or some type of device to attach to your existing glasses, especially if you have multiple pairs. Of course with so many shapes and sizes of frames, that could be a little challenging.
Are you still liking them?im a gadget guy and i love them at first sight.
I tried these at an Amazon 4 Star store. I wasn’t disappointed in the look or feel but they failed on the fit. They were way too wide for my face. I wish they world offer them in multiple sizes. The style for sale currently are made to fit men. I feel Amazon dropped the ball on this one…
From the design of them it seems trivial to sell the sides seperate from the lens holders...and after later development make them glue ons to existing frames....
Your really handsome Mike, you could easily pull off wearing this Amazon glasses and make it look good.
For what it’s worth, because this is the first video of yours I’ve seen, my first impression of you was you were wearing glasses. So I think you look weird with them off :) those frames look pretty dope on you actually
I was hoping it would be using bone conduction tech for the sound, it could really fit smart glasses
I hear a lot about bone conducting sound but honestly, I haven't used it yet
The thing about bone conduction is that it's always hit or miss depending on placement & if you have any sort of inner ear issues you're kind of out of luck.
@@MikeOBrienMedia it’s honestly an all or nothing type of audio. I love it, but it can be awful to some people so i would love having it in these, but I see why they chose speakers
I was seriously considering buying these but thank you for your impressions of the audio quality, my main sticking point.
I just got my echo frames just now opening the box after seeing your video. I liked your review on these glasses, I'm gonna try them out and put them to the test. Hopefully it's not a regret 😊
Great video Mike. You put a lot of time and effort into it, Well done
Thank you! I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching and being subscribed!
I have the bose sunglasses and love them for when I'm outside walking around. I listen to my podcasts and or audio books and its great for taking a call. It keeps my ears free for my surroundings and is inconspicuous to others around me.
With the sunglasses don’t other people hear you and your music and phone call? I’m asking because I considered Bose but that part had me skeptical. Thanks
@@t.terrell7037 nope. Indoors at full volume maybe but outside at most people with hear the sounds of a conversation but not like eavesdropping clear.
What I've also come to enjoy is having directions from Google maps while driving and it doesn't interfere with the car radio.
I wear glasses sometimes and i love gadgets, so i love mine❤. Plus its a great way to discreetly listen to audio books and music at work 😂
Since I wear prescription glasses all the time anyway, I definitely would wear these for the added functionality. I question Amazon's timing though. Those who have no need for glasses definitely won't want something to fog up over their face masks.
Calling alexa Alex. Its so considerate of you! Thanks
I am glad you appreciated that! I made the mistake once of calling her Alexa in a video and accidentally made thousands of Echos tell viewers the weather in Miami 😂
@@MikeOBrienMedia haha that’s funny
If it doesn't have a hud I don't see what the point is for me atleast
EXACTAMUNDO!!!!
I definitely enjoyed this video. It's good to see Amazon experimenting with this kind of tech. But i think it's a bust. (i could be wrong though)
Thanks! I am happy to hear you liked the video! I think you might be right, but I am glad they are headed in the right direction!
The microphone is excellent actually. Nice review. Got mine yesterday. Time will tell how often I use them.
This is a fantastic review! Right to the point and very concise. Love that. Great job
These glasses are still pretty basic, maybe we'll have cooler upgrades like HUD in the glass later. Btw, what watch are you wearing Mike?
As soon as smart glasses have a HUD, I’ll get them. For now they’re just Siri attached to your face. At that point what’s the problem with taking an extra 2 seconds to pull out your phone. These glasses are a step in the right direction, but I want to have glasses that are literally a replacement for my phone.
It’d be cool to be able to adjust The brightness and shadows in real time when wearing it
Any kinda audio, taking phone calls, or using a voice assistant might not be the best way to go. They could just leave all that to their wireless earbuds that connect with the glasses. It will cut down on the bulk of the the glasses so they look more like traditional glasses. Instead they could just focus on the AR aspect of the glasses and leave the audio to the earbuds giving them the capability to connect with each other. I think that is where the Apple Glasses will go with this.
I liked your video. You talk very clear and to the point. Thanks
Good mic quality. You look good in them.
I like the gen 2 version as they come with the blue light filter lense. As I work with computers and listen to audio books all day the lense is a huge plus. Speakers are just what it is and can live without rich sound quality as I'm just listening to books anyway
Thanks for the review Mike! I was really tempted to buy these as an early adopter just out of curiosity, but now after seeing your review I think all my questions were answered. Unrelated question, are you tall and if so what jean jacket is that? I have been looking everywhere for a tall jean jacket for a long body. Thanks man! Keep up the good reviews!
I love these glasses
I wear them every day
I feel they are the best things in blue tooth so far.
the mic quality is actully fantastic!
I love them. Light and well made, and yes, sound is terrible but it is there
I found this video while researching smart glasses. Earbuds hurt my ears. I've tried multiple types. I enjoy listening to pod casts and audiobooks while running errands. That's exactly what I'm looking at these for.
Hi, Heather! Check out the Bose sunglasses if you want to listen to music using glasses instead of buds.
Are they rated as eye protection? As a firearms instructor i suppose there might be use there.
What song is it that you played on the glasses during the bleed test? (what an odd sentence)
I looked at your Spotify playlist that time to see if it was there, and thought "man, I know a good song for him to test headphones with", and scrolled through your playlist and it actually happened that you have it there. Black Smoke Rising. That was a pretty cool coincidence, and now you have my respect for music taste lol. I'm now gonna go through that playlist after hearing the first couple songs.
I actually couldn't play any songs from my Spotify playlist because of copyright concerns. I did listen to Black Smoke Rising on these glasses though. Gretta is growing very quickly. I'm hoping to get to one of their concerts once this pandemic clears up!
it's nice to see any kind of progress in smart glass...... they've definitely haven't been growing, as much as your content will be in this year. 😉 been a long time viewer of your content, thank you for some of your time, Mike 🙏
Thanks so much for supporting my channel! I'm hoping this channel sees some major growth in 2021
Thinking about getting these to listen to RUclips an podcast at work. Amazon don't allow employees to use earbuds but I don't know if I will be able to hear over the conveyors running.
Did you get them
@dev2times I did but they just aren't loud enough in the area I work in right next to the packing machine an conveyors.
@@stephenbowden1142 ahhh mannn. Ok i am going to try adiff brand and see
Glasses microphone sounds pretty good honestly.
Yeah I was surprised. They were not bad for phone calls
@@MikeOBrienMedia Not at all! I watched your video reviewing the raycon ear buds (after buying them sadly) and these sound MUCH better than those on phone calls.
@@StreetSharts I was going to say, I’ve heard microphone tests from earbuds or any other kinds of headphones and usually the audio quality is surprisingly not very good
My friend is legally blind but still has a tiny bit of vision left I feel like these could be very beneficial for someone with bad vision being able to read text messages, answer phone calls etc.
As an iPhone user, these are functional now. The 1st Gen really wasn't. I ordered and installed polarized sunglass lens for my Frames. They are awesome for walking in my neighborhood. Nothing in your ears! Battery life is also much improved over my first pair. I listen to music most of the time I wear them. It provides constant background music and still allowing you to talk to someone. I have Echo Buds....love them...but if you stop to talk to someone at a safe distance....I have to remove them...even if I pause the music. One trick I've figured out with the Frames. I push the action button and just ask for what I want....no need to say her name.
The mic was surprisingly good
Mike, BTW, Great review! Weather a boom or bust really depends on you individual situation. I can see where a person could really use this, but I can see where these would be a take it or leave it product. A more programing scenario oriented approach would be required approach would make this more feasible to the masses.
Thanks for watching, Keith! I am hoping this can get the ball rolling with smart glasses. Maybe Apple or Samsung will come out with a pair someday soon
No, you look so cute with them, actually
Woww.. This technology smart glass concept very useful for who wearing prescribed glass, they get all in one, no need ear buds and no need smart watch..
I subscribed when he consciously chose not to trigger my Alexa.
Until I can get glasses that work like Tony Stark's "Friday", I probably won't bother ... 🤷🏻♂️
Honestly, most of Tony Stark's stuff would be nice to have
Thinking Fast and Slow, amazing book
I have never heard of smart rings until this VERY SECOND.
So they're basically smart buds shaped like glasses with reduced sound quality?
I got them as my own Christmas gift last year and even though there’s room for improvement in my job/office environment the Echo Frames have been a better way to stay focus while getting my notifications, phone calls... there’s a way to set some default answers to questions you make to alexa as well (for example access passwords) and she will just tell it to you once you name the trigger words you preset for it... and one of the plus on this is adding amounts just by reading them to alexa and she reads them back to you with the total answer... I think is not for everyone but I’ve enjoy every single day since then... I was worried about battery life but it last through my work day no problem 😉
These are great for people who need to talk hands free while working. Example is if you are an engineer working in the field and you are also handling an iPad or a surface pro. Yes you can have a bluetooth earbud in but this would be better, as long as you could wear over frame safety goggles/eyewear over them.
This was a great review!! I've been researching Bluetooth glasses.
Thats super insights of them new glasses.
I just received my echo frames Gen 2 today. I Need to get them upgraded with prescription lenses. I did set them up and I'm excited 2 use them. I don't plan on them being a revolutionary tech product. But they work perfectly for adiuo books so far.
I just got a pair to work alongside my hearing aids. I can’t wait to get my prescription (+20) if there’s any eye doctors reading this 😊 I am so so excited to get them to be fitted with my lenses! I am going to use them for reading to me grocery lists while I’m in the store and such. I’m legally blind in my left eye and totally blind in my right so it’s gonna be so helpful! I got them so that when I’m walking also, I don’t have to wear my bone conduction headphones and my hearing aids and my glasses as well. I have a certain way that I can do it but it gets really frustrating. So I cannot wait to get them fixed up so I can actually use them. I can do most things without my vision, but it doesn’t make me dizzy because I have no lens in my eye, so my glasses literally are the lens of my eye, and otherwise all I see is color. But with them on, I can see up to 3 feet max. .
As someone who is hard of hearing, it’s actually pretty good. The base is nice and Basye, and the only real problem I have is the higher frequencies, the ones I have more trouble with aren’t always clear. But being able to wear them, and my hearing aids together is amazing. My hearing aids can stream from my phone, but when I do that , it mute to my hearing aids so all I can hear is the phone to prevent me from having too much difficulty, but it could be very difficult at the same time when I need to hear my surroundings. They also pair nicely with my braille note taker, it’s basically an android tablet for the blind with a braille display on the bottom that allows me to read the braille instead of using the speech and I can have some jam sessions with a Monsters and then while I’m walking it’s awesome!
Also, I do actually have a tendency to fall asleep in my glasses because of how dependent I have to be on them lol so I literally have to have Alexa remind me to remove my glasses before bed lol
Hey, Optician here, your standard eye doctor will 9/10 not work on these frames bc they're smart glasses. The process of heating the frame multiple times to fit the lens into them will damage them. The only way is if you perhaps find a place that specializes in cold snap frames. Also, they still might not do it bc if they're damaged they can't compensate for them. Just an fyi before you take the plunge.
Also, are they waterproof?? Bc, ya know, rain, snow, cleaning your eyeglasses (they should be damp before you wipe them to prevent scratching fyi).
Also, for the ones that actually have display, blue light protection would be a concern.
Great review. I am actually thinking for Zoom calls and podcasts (which seems to be most of my days lately) this would be great. I am assuming you can pair them with the computer as a "normal" Bluetooth headset?
A while back I asked you to review the Wyze Headphones. Will you be reviewing them or should I rely on other videos?
Sorry for not replying. I get tons of comments and I try to get to all of them, but I have also been working on some big projects lately. I don't think I will be reviewing the Wyze headphones. I really appreciate that you value my opinions and would wait to hear my opinion. If you end up getting them, please let me know how they are! Happy new year!!
Love n respect Mikee. Great video
Really good review. These definitely sound like they could be useful but maybe they are still not there yet. I'd like to see if they can be made much thinner in the future.
Yeah these definitely feel like a first gen design. Hopefully the next model has some significant improvements!
@@MikeOBrienMedia Yeah, hopefully. At least these do have an all-day battery life. Wish they had more designs though.
Dang, their mic sounded pretty great!
Without a transparent screen of some sort in the lens I don't really see the point though to be honest.
yea I don't see much point in them. I think they just have so much money they throw this out and doesn't seem like they put much thought or innovation in it. I'd rather just use wireless earbuds that do the same thing and are much smaller.
Good review, Mike. Actually, I've never heard of these.
I would totally get these if they had some kind of display. I am on the fence as of now
These companies shud focus on adding features for people with visual problems if they really want to make a difference. Imagine someone with weak eyesight using these for Google maps while walking and taking turn by turn directions etc.
You don't look weird in glasses. Can we get them as readers? I use a 2x reading glass/cheaters currently so the glass on my face would be useless if they arent.
Smart glasses are indeed the future.... but not yet bruh
Yeah these were fun to try out. I am hoping the next iterations (from any brand) include nice displays
@@MikeOBrienMedia that'd be great. I hope soon i dont have to hold my 200g brick phone to watch the damn youtube video lol
If 2 people have a Elon Musk Neuralink microchip implant, can you make a phone call and just telepathically communicate?
Imagine going to the tests in school with aumentention reality online in your glasses always best student ...take my money where do i buy one😍
I mean they'll be Bluetooth connected I'm assuming, so a teacher can easily tell if they're students are connected or not have them turn off Bluetooth lol
The mic sounds excellent.
As for the music. I would say it's not much of a issue. And really shouldn't be as I think making it a jack of all trades isnt good. Focusing on practicality seems to be the best idea and in that regard this smart glasses performs well
If this had Google assistant this would be an instant hit
If you haven an android, it dose
This looks like a completely useless product. I believe smart glasses will only ever become a thing when they come with visual integration. If it's not a screen it ain't happening.
I wear glasses every day and I’m waiting for a good smart glasses to come out but I would definitely use them
They're like poor man's Vuzix glasses. Kinda neat and at only $250 a solid alternative to current and even planned AR smart glasses. All the same features without the expensive cutting edge display technology. It's honestly a solid move for Amazon to just get some skin in the smart glasses game in preparation for if & when AR glasses take off. At their current price point I wouldn't mind giving them a shot. They look like something nifty to try at least until Vuzix get their new waveguide dual display glasses out on the market.
@0:08 Bear Stearns sweatshirt - savage!
Thanks for the thorough review! I can see these as a gateway to Amazon smart glasses with screens for baby boomers or anyone that just wants to dip a toe in the smart glasses waters.
You actually look better in the glasses. No pun intended.
Are they durable will they break easily that is a grave concern
Hi bro,,I planing to buying iphone12 mini, what about battery backup?because of this mobile small size display.
No heads up display? pass

Welp, guess I'd be reading "Thinking, Fast and Slow" next off of my TBR list 🤣 Also, glasses look good on you!
I appreciate the compliment. Also, I highly recommend Thinking Fast and Slow. It is a fascinating book and especially relevant in today's political and media conditions!

Hey as you reviewed the jabra elite 75ts can I please just ask 1 question on them ?
I wish I had enough of a social life for these to be of any use to me. I’ll buy them when I can watch RUclips in my glasses.
Gen1s are almost always a pass for me. Cool product though. Call me when Gen5 is available.
I was an early user. Now I have the 2nd Generation also. I wear glasses anyway so of course I have prescription lenses installed.
They are great under all conditions. They are hands free for driving. A quick tap on the right temple arm and I get all my text messages, reminders, and other notifications. I can also leave myself memos and call anyone on my phone list. At home, I can make announcements or drop in on Echo Dots or Shows in other rooms.
I started using computers in the 1960's and have stayed current ever since, so adapting to, and adopting, new technology is a breeze. Over the years I've never been a fan of visual distractions. Using a heads-up display is fine if one is well trained in multitasking. There is no way I care to be on the road with the same idiots who have to look at their cell phones while driving. 💥💥💥📵
I think it's a first foot in the water product for them. It will give them a chance to receive some feedback from the early adops. And at some point down the road of time, they will give us a much more polished product. Better frame designs, in lens displays, longer battery life, thinner arms, better sound and so on. And at a much lower price. While I'll pass on this one, I'll watch for future versions. I look forward to this piece of technology developing. No more being bored at the next company meeting.
You look so good with the glasses 😱😱😱!
I appreciate the compliment. Glasses are one of those things that look weird to me at first, but if I wore them for a few weeks, I am sure I would get used to the look
Is the Bluetooth only able to link to smart phones? I've been trying to link my bose frames to my Xbox and Playstation, but on Playstation I get a message stating that the glasses aren't supported. I've been looking for any audio glasses with this capability to really upgrade my movie viewing experience. Unfortunately the bose won't link and has the best audio. Can't even find a work around.
Nvm, literally just found the best work around. Connected my phone via HDMI to my TV with the frames still linked to my phone. I can open up apps like Netflix and Hulu and watch them that way. Now all I need are clear replacement lenses and I'm all good to go. Absolutely highly recommend this. The world is welcome for another new way to experience movies and TV
These look great but it would've cool if it had a camera.
If they are worried about lawsuits that's the users responsibilities of what they can or can't record.
Are these comfortable with headphones on top?
For a cheaper price i would. They are a bit too expensive for the lack of features I would one day want in my smart glasses. I think that a voice assistant is the way to go with it though. Perhaps one day you can have a voice assistant that controls a visual projection on your glasses.
I agree after 2 years
I think you have a great Chanel and great informative content
Can these glasses connect to Bluetooth speaker? Or just a cell phone?
the google glass is still winning honestly
