      Our collective ship is constantly headed towards peril because humanity undervalues perspectives that make the individual feel like they are potentially another part of the problem. They look away. We are all the problem until we uplift objective psychological wisdom as a society to be commonplace thinking.

    Yet another great video! I truely love this channel!
    This is a great example why early education and parentship is so darn important! It is a shame that some parents are allowed to "destroy" a childs early upbringing by misusing or abusing them.
    My mother always told me this old german saying: "The hand on the cradle rules the world".

    • @LinkEX
      @LinkEX 8 лет назад +2

      +Max Hillebrand That's an interesting saying.
      Alhough oddly enough, I have never even one heard of this before - despite being a German, having relatives that would commonly use such saying, _and_ being a friend of aphorisms.

    • @maxhillebrand96
      @maxhillebrand96 8 лет назад +2

      In German it would be: "Die Hand an der Wiege regiert die Welt" I don't know if that is a common saying, but it stuck with me and this video actually confirms this thesis.

      Yeah, that's the translation I found as well, but that didn't ring a bell for me.

    If you have a horrifying parent (or two) what you have to do is the following:
    List on a paper their worst character traits and the greatest difficulties you had to face with, back then when you had to live with them.Then take the example of an ex-partner of yours just to see how much he and your experience with him had in common with the things you have on your list. The result is often really very scary. But you may learn something from it, for the next time... And here is definitely some hope:
    Psychologist William James said:
    "My experience is what I agree to attend to. Only those things which I notice shape my mind".
    So, the most " aware" you are of what's going on and the more things you notice about the hidden forces which seem to determine your life, the more you can change the way your mind works, and hopefully, but very slowly free the rest of your life from that curse. To some extent I mean.
    But it is a lifelong battle, and you should always remember not to be too harsh on yourself. Because you are fighting against something within yourself, which was there before you were born! It sounds a bit complicated, bu indeed it isn’t:
    Argentina's most beloved psychologist Gabriel Rolon explains it, saying that long before we were born, we have already existed in the mind of that mother, who already dreamt of us, who had a name for us, who imagined a world and a future for us. In Rolon's book Historias de Divan, there is a sentence by Alejandro Dolina, which I will never forget. It shows you how strong that force is, which constantly operates inside you and literally can ruin your life:
    "Steps that were born before my steps are carrying me towards my breakdown. "
    ( "Me llevan rumbo al fracaso pasos que nacieron antes que mis pasos" )
    There is also a wonderful poem by Paul Celan, that describes this so beautifully. You must read it till the end though, to feel the connection:
    HOMECOMING ( Heimkehr )
    Snowfall, denser and denser,
    dove-coloured as yesterday,
    snowfall, as if even now you were sleeping.
    White, stacked into distance.
    Above it, endless,
    the sleigh track of the lost.
    Below, hidden,
    presses up
    what so hurts the eyes,
    hill upon hill,
    invisible.
    On each,
    fetched home into its today,
    an I slipped away into dumbness:
    wooden, a post.
    There: a feeling,
    blown across by the ice wind
    attaching its dove- its snow-
    coloured cloth as a flag.
    This is all very melancholy stuff though... But when you feel like you need to lighten up a bit, you can always get back to Sam Cooke! Especially the song " A change is gonna come" is very helpful. That's where he says:
    "There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
    But now I think I'm able to carry on
    It's been a long, a long time coming
    But I know a change gonna come, oh yes it will"
    ( Thank you very much for this very important reminder. I loved the animation and the music too:-)

    Both of my parents have personality disorders, and as a survival tactic I developed an enormous resilience and sense of responsibility, of which I am proud. My struggle earlier in life was accepting that being so resilient is exhausting. I begged for a break, often putting too much pressure on my partner to carry me while I finally relaxed.
    Therapy helped. I finally had to allow myself to, every now and then, be completely irresponsible and fragile. I’m in a phase right now that has lasted for months. It’s very therapeutic. Thankfully my partner understands.

    I blows me away how different people respond to some of the comments I’ve made on random videos. I usually don’t bother unless I have something funny to say, or , at least I think so. ( granted, my sense of humor isn’t for everyone). But the range of responses I’ve gotten is extremely broad. Some people will laugh at stuff others are very offended at. They cherry pick words and are oblivious to others, seeing only what they want. This video is an excellent explanation for this phenomenon

    Wow. You got me, on the picture that could be interpreted as an intimidating father-figure... Luckily I have reallized that most of the people trying to intimidate, have had very bad childhoods themselves, or maybe they are very insecure deep inside of themselves.
    It is very interesting to discover some of these unconcious reactions, that have deep roots in our childhood. Also, it is difficult to not end up having some of the same bad behavioural patterns as our caregivers may have had.
    Thanks Alain, and the rest of you magnificent people at The School of Life, for sharing these revelations with us aspiring thinkers.

I like many of the videos but I can't identify in the slightest with the videos where they share their self reflective opinions/thoughts. I really hope that most people are not so insecure and have that low of self-esteem.

    The only thing I would argue here is that basis of transference is actually functional, without it you would be constantly overwhelmed by having to figure out how each new instance you encountered was going to go. With transference you already have a starting point and given that most humans are a lot more like each other than different it works amazingly well...much of the time.

    • @ThePeaceableKingdom
      @ThePeaceableKingdom 8 лет назад

      +The School of Life I would love to see a video on Jung, but I realize he's really hard to do.
      He was thinking in public; so when someone describes Jung's ideas, the Jung of the '20s is different from the Jung of the mid century versus the Jung of his later years. He was understood differently by different people; and it was in his nature to confirm rather than correct whatever understanding they proffered. Consequently, there are about as many 'Jungs' as there are Jungians... Personally, I was deeply influenced by Philip Wylie's understanding (or fruitful misunderstanding) of Jung's theories. He rooted the ideas in Darwin, Frazer, and Freud, and stripped away the 'woo' that frequently accretes to his ideas.
      You've done Freud, and I think you've done Darwin. Wylie is obscure, so I don't expect that. But Frazer, and The Golden Bough, etc., would make an very interesting video... at least for those who approach spiritual ideas with the rational mind. It's not the last word on the subject, of course, far from it; but it's a very interesting and important opening of the conversation...

    • @ThePeaceableKingdom
      @ThePeaceableKingdom 8 лет назад

      *****
      Do you doubt that Darwin's ideas are evidence based?

    • @ThePeaceableKingdom
      @ThePeaceableKingdom 8 лет назад

      *****
      Jung's theories are quite compatible with William James'. Jung's big idea was that we are animals and have instinct. James was quite content with that, too. Jung's brilliance was to realize that myth is the product of animal instinct; animal nature written in symbols both universal and, at times, idiosyncratically individual. James seems to consider consciousness epiphenominal, but found it necessary to redefine true and false, to engage in a bit of "what the meaning of 'is' is" to make the system work. Jung was able to preserve traditional concepts of true and false by giving consciousness a different purpose than epiphenomena - a meta purpose, that of intercepting instinct. This conception of instinct made consciousness not a quirky human attribute but a natural aspect of animal nature and implied extending similar awareness to similar physiologies. This continues to be borne out in studies of animal mental processes, giving his speculations wide and rigorous evidence-based support...

    • @ThePeaceableKingdom
      @ThePeaceableKingdom 8 лет назад +1

      *****
      Our conversation demonstrates why it would be difficult to thumbnail a video on Jung. It's difficult for people to even agree on what he said, much less what it meant! To you his work seems fantastic, fictional, religious... to me it seems empirical, material science about the nature and behavior of animals.
      An awful lot of silliness has been written and believed about Jung - now, and even in his own time. (That's consistent with his theory of the myth making machinery of the mind's search for meaning, BTW.) But the silliness shouldn't discredit the science. An awful lot of silliness has been written and believed about quantum mechanics, too, (i.e... QM proves the existence of god because who else was there to observe the big bang?..) and we (well, most of us...) don't discredit QM because of the way it's misunderstood by lesser minds.
      I'm not sure that just giving people up-to-date scientific consensus is the best method. If we approach truth rather than arrive at it - an attitude consistent with Jung - then it's important to cover the history of the approach. In math I don't want to just be given the formulae, I want to see the derivation. When we only give current consensus, our information is quickly dated, because the up-to-date consensus in science is ever changing.

    knowledge really is power. to be able to identify (not necessarily by name but that is even a bonus to it) a concept that it's workings have power over u, once u realize especially that others have identified this and even given it a name, not only do u know others know exactly where u r comming from, but also that they tries to help u simply by identifying this thing called transference, for example.
    once u r aware of that, it stops having power over u because u know the greatest minds have had ur back throughout time to tell u this. That's just how I feel, like the attempt to fix a problem by them identifying it works because u already know people have known what ur going through, and especially with something like transference, where it could be experience u have of people not understanding, well now u know that in fact they do and it was just ignorant fucking stupid assholes along the way that didnt. then u get to join the cool team and say fuck u asshole I know the problem now, the problem is u!
    knowledge is real world power. if u know ur the shit, u have the power to actually be the shit cause fuck it I AM, which is what almost every prominent philosopher and martyr throughout time were stressing their whole lives to get u to feel. I feel like the smart people throughout time loved me before they even knew me, and that's why I get so much out of their words, I allow myself to feel as though they were saying it directly to me because the whole point was to make me happy (and others obviously lol) all of their work goes in vain if u don't make use of it, so make knowledge ur power, because knowledge is even the power that MAKES knowledge power, once u realize all of these things I've said

      +Thomas Fisher "to be able to identify (not necessarily by name but that is even a bonus to it) a concept that it's workings have power over u, once u realize especially that others have identified this and even given it a name," I especially like the not necessarily by name as I myself was well aware of this concept but knew not it's name... However the stops having power over you.... I believe that transference has an even bigger power, one we can never beat, yes we may over come anxieties or things hindering our progression, change the negative into positive. Transference on a whole is what keeps us Human. With even the earliest interactions of conciousness having a direct impact on us right now. It flows through time like a force of it's own and only us as a collective can sway it's balance, some will feel it's extremes but most will quite luckily live in the middle.

      killbotone I totally agree with what Michelle said that sounds so true, and yeah big terminology makes you lack actual awareness of what's going on that's true

    • @thomasfisher763
      @thomasfisher763 8 лет назад

      mitchiemasha yeah I agree, I guess I did mean having power over you in a negative way, when you think they do it because they hate you rather than just out of habit, then u can begin to learn from it. I agree with what you said though I like that

    My transference has always been, and continues to be, to hold myself back for the sake of others. It makes me unhappy at times but I think about how isolated I might be if I don't and am petrified at the thought. I have always found it socially punishing to be at my best. Even when I live constantly with one hand tied behind my back I am often accused of trying to be better than everyone else and being a know it all and looking down my nose at people. It is absolutely exhausting but I don't know how to undo this habit and am very very afraid of the consequences.

    Knowledge doesn't mean understanding. Only because you know the working mechanism behind your behavior / actions doesn't necessarily mean you can control them. You will always be biased by your experience.

    Hi, clinical psychologist here. This video describes object relations and projective identification. The word Transference (and counter transience) refers to a phenomenon known in the modern psychology world as occurring only in psychoanalysis really. Otherwise it's known as projection! Sorry to be that guy, but it's not indistinguishable from a Freudian, Klienian, Jungian perspective. Also it would be lovely if the psychology videos locate their theories in one of the schools of psychology as psychodynamic theory is pretty last week now - would be nice to acknowledge the range at the least or ideally see some narrative, systemic, liberation and social constructionist psychological theory!

    Good vídeo. But a little bit confusing at times. I think it confuses the concept of transference with the concept of proyection. The tests you talked about have nothing to do with transference, they are proyective tests, transference although it is present in everyday life in every relationship can be more apreciated on the psychoanalitic setting.

    • @marilynaudrey
      @marilynaudrey 8 лет назад +7

      Wow, im surprised. They are actually two very different concepts. Projection is a defense mechanism in which the individual puts something of himself on the outside world. Is a common defense mechanism for example used by people with paranoia, they fear the outside think people want to harm them or think that people think that they are homosexuals when in fact they are the ones that think that about themselves, they are the ones that want to harm, but the psyche is incapable of accepting that so is puts it on the outside so it can be less dangerous, but at a high cost. Transference on the other hand is not a defense mechanism, is a universal phenomena in which a person displays emotions, originally experimented with significant figures of the past, to people in the present life, the most common example is in love, in relationships, you have a transference with you partner based on the feelings that you had/have of your mother or dad depending on how the individual lived its early life. I hope I could be of any help at demonstrating these different concepts, English is not my first language so i hope this post can be readable.

    • @miaumiaumiauy
      @miaumiaumiauy 8 лет назад

      I think I understand the difference between both concepts but aren't both psychological mechanisms originated from the experiences that one had with authority figures as a child? aren't they both universal concepts? Can't I also project subjectively positive characteristics of how I perceive myself on to external relationships with other people?
      I am honestly confused and I would be grateful if someone could clarify.

    The problem of the Rorschachtest is not its principal intention. That one seems as strong as utmost fundamental. Make people reveal themselves, which means seeing what goes on. Great effort.
    The problem is the procacious assumption to be able to remotely adequately channel such a revelation. Pictures persist for their own sake. Interpreters do. It is a total mess.
    And that is so, because the human mind is like gum. It got texture, taste, color. But it will wrap at whatever you throw it, at least when already used.
    The solution is trust. Given sufficient trust, sufficient levels of comfort - everyone opens up. And then Rorschach may even become useful, in a modified less presumptuous way.
    You can not trick someone to circumvent trust. Never.

    Authority is Force
    Sexuality is War
    Uncertainty is Opportunity/Danger
    This is how I see the world. And I know millions also see it this way. Curiously, on the psychological test, my own responses were thus; on _"Deep down sex is..."_ my subconscious spit out just one word: _rape_. Not of myself, but my mind instantaneously threw a red flag as if I will be falsely accused of rape and it makes me immediately suspicious of anyone I'd be having sex with, if at all, with such a dangerous warning. On _"If people really knew me they would..."_ part, my very first instinctive response was: _freeze_; as in, paralyzed, like a deer in the headlights. In the last statement I couldn't think of anything instantaneously, my mind had to actually slow down and think about this one. _"When I hear someone described as very intellectual, I imagine they will...,"_ be very tenacious.
