I remember this one like yesterday. Gary Mercer played club footy for pikiao in rotorua. I played against him for tauranga. They would beat us everytime. But when he scored in the corner, he was playing for all of us.
Taylor our new Prop Forward came in to tackle Tunks who took exception, but Taylor was no shrinking violet and gave Tunks the 1 2 scuffle. Nice one stu as the saying goes. Wish he had been available in 86 as Dane, Kevin and Mark had all retired or were not available. Even though Kurt was wonderful, and Mark was sublime we needed another hard nut prop forward to allow our backs to play.
Great Win by the Kiwis in 1987.I dont understand Why they didnt select the same players in the 1988 Rugby League World Cup Grand Final?What happen there? The 1987 Kiwi Rugby League Team were Great in Form Players? When you HOT!You Hot Man! Crikey!??????
I remember watching this game.The Kangaroos beat us 3-0 in a test series in 1986 and then went undefeated on a tour to the British Isles and France later that year.Kiwis were under dogs but played their hearts out to defeat the Aussie’s.
I remember this game a year after the 1986 Australian side crushed the kiwis 3 - 0 in a test series then N.Z made a few big changes with a new unknown coach and a few new faces Sammy Stewart,Gary Mercer a teenager named Kevin Iro up against the likes of Lewis, Kenny and Sterling That's a lot of footie I.Q on the field ... but the kiwis pulled off a big upset and was great for N.Z rugby league
I have to say Wally was dead set disappointing in this game he treated the ref with disrespect not a good look for such a fine player. Not his finest hour.
