I agree how you put it and of course real world experience teaches you things that a classroom or textbook can't. But you must give credit where credit is due in which a University education does make you in the long run an overall stronger software engineer due to making you a well rounded individual especially if you went for a Computer Science degree or a engineering discipline. This field is so unique in a way that it is not straight forward as let's say other disciplines such as being doctor due to so many ways code is written and expressed into something that it becomes a lifelong learning process but having the overall core foundations of what a programmer does to a computer and how a computer interprets something that is something that isn't learned over night.

I don't think the agism part is too much to worry about. While applying for software engineering jobs about 8mo ago, some of the companies I respect the most were closed off to anyone without 10+ years of general CS experience. Everyone at my current job is on an escalator rather than stairs, my company gives us regular promotions and pay increases. Our most qualified people have found themselves in non-micromanaging leadership positions without aiming for them. It seems easier to me (in terms of the openings I saw) to land a FANG job after a few years of experience than fresh out of college. Of course, if you do have the drive to specialize or aim for a higher position or particular company, go for it, you'll get there.

I have a degree in electrical engineering, graduating in 1996. In retrospect, I probably should have gone into computer science instead. Hindsight is always 20/20, but considering I spent my entire career in the software industry, the engineering degree per se didn't give me anything that a computer science degree wouldn't have. By the way, I’m not even working as an engineer right now even though I’m already a year out of my master’s program having graduated with a 4.0. I never worked in my field in my life. All the companies I tried to get a job at wouldn’t hire me because I didn’t have any internship experience. Instead I’m working as a test technician next to the engineers but a lot of them see me as an idiot. I tried to apply for the control systems engineer at my company last week but they told me they were looking for someone with more experience. Well, from my experience all the engineers that work over me are incompetent and don’t take any of my advice seriously even when I’m right. As a result the work gets done incredibly inefficiently. When left on my own, I’m able to complete the same test case as another technician thats been there for 3 years in almost half the time. It just goes to show you how completely useless experience is compared to hard work and a competitive attitude. They don’t even know I have a higher degree than them in their field. It’s just so frustrating honestly. It feels like I have the mind of an adult but the social skills of a toddler and I’m being told what to do by 10 year olds. Hi Lehpurdz, I agree with some of what you said but I have to respectfully disagree. If you go on linkedin, type in "Software Development" and filter by entry level jobs, you will see that there is over 400k+ job posts (at the entry level alone). This is a massive sign that there is still a ton of demand. People have been saying it's going to be saturated since the early 2010s and not only has it not gotten saturated, there's more demand than ever. With that being said, although the demand has increased, the competition at the entry level also has, so you absolutely do have to know your stuff, you can't just BS your way into a job like you used to be able to do. Hope this helps to clear up any confusion you might have.
      Cheers

    • @Lehpurdzzz
      @Lehpurdzzz 2 года назад +13

@@ShaneHummus You absolutely cannot trust the linked-in “entry level” categorization. Recruiters don’t bother with that selection and it defaults to entry level. My fiancé is a technical recruiter and assures me of this. Look at the job descriptions for these “entry level” positions and the required years of experience in writing and you’ll see that very very few of them are actually entry level. There’s demand for mid-level and senior level, not entry level.
I hire 3 interns in the bay every summer and always ask them how the market is doing for their friends and they ALWAYS say there’s extreme competition for software internships, and by comparison much less competition for electrical and mechanical. I have 3 friends that never did find a CS job and had to fall back to other industries. Look at the comments on your videos, people even here are saying they spent years trying to land their first CS gig. Go to university recruiting fairs and the CS area is mega crowded.
When I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2019 there were 32 electrical engineering graduates including masters and there were over 400 CS graduates. The school had to restructure to accommodate the massive influx in CS applications and had to cut funding to the other departments to accommodate the demand. Take a look at all the other top school’s ratios and compare that to your demand forecasts and comparatively, CS is flooded. I assure you as someone in the industry there is extreme competition for entry level positions in CS! The hardest entry level positions to fill are embedded software and electrical engineering because any high-schooler even remotely interested in engineering is pushed so heavily toward software, and kids nowadays are not handy, they don’t work on cars like past generations, building toys like legos and rc cars have taken a back seat to video games and iPads, and so kids are afraid to touch physical things that would have motivated them to study electrical and mechanical engineering. The culture-shift drives the next generation of workers and we can predict future supply and demand based on that.
In addition, developing 3rd world countries don’t have access to 3D modeling software, 3D printers and supplies to physically build things that would encourage them to study mechanical. They don’t have the extremely expensive lab equipment and circuit components to encourage studying electrical. But they do have computers so they can code. This means over the next generation there’s going to be an even more massive flooding of the market in cs so that work will be shifted overseas SO FAST. Just this past 3 months in this current economic situation, my fiancé’s Fortune 500 company has laid off a large number of CS engineers and replaced them with oversees teams who are just as good at 1/6th the cost. Who did they keep? The electrical engineers that have to develop the circuit boards in-house and physically bring-up the designs, the embedded software guys (EEs that can program) and the mechanical engineers that the electrical teams work very closely with. Those are the jobs new grads want in the US- ones with demand now AND later. If you’re brilliant and going to UCB or UCLA you’ll have no problem landing CS. But if you’re like most people that go to a state school for CS that isn’t super well respected I am very worried because there are not nearly enough entry level positions to go around, and by the time they do land a role it’ll be replaced by overseas workers in due time. At my company, there are NO in-house software guys. They’re all overseas because they’re WAY cheaper and still very competent. Of course all our hardware-related guys are in-office. I report to the CEO and we’ve discussed this kind of thing on a quarterly basis and it all points towards CS entry-level being flooded and hardware being scarce. Please, consult people in the industry in conjunction with your research for a more accurate picture of the engineering job market and where it’s going

Some companies want developers with x years of experience in some web development framework to maintain or improve on their existing systems and if you are looking to land your first job as a developer you'd research the ones that are in demand the most in your area and start learning and building

Yes it's a great career even if you don't get into a FAANG-tier company. But it's definitely getting saturated and harder to get a career in it. The coding interviews assess internship and entry-level applicants on medium and hard algorithm questions. This filters out so many applicants that now it's become an accepted reality that you're going to have to fill out 150+ applications until you finally land an internship/job. Don't believe me, just read r/CSCareerQuestions.
Worth keeping in mind for any student considering this as a career.

As someone who got a degree in mechanical engineering and now works as a software engineer I would say yes and no. The engineering design skills you learn will be applicable to other disciplines and really anything you do in life. You would ideally need to use some kind of coding in at least a couple of your projects to prove that you are competent in that area. It’s not directly transferable but it can be done. I took several courses in my ME track that incorporated coding and leveraged that experience into the job I have now. However, if you really just want to be a software engineer you’d be better off majoring in SE or CS.

I think understanding statistics on various majors is important. Instead of focusing solely on which degree is better people should also focus on what career path they would like to take. Using myself as an example while CS is a better degree statistically but I chose MIS since I want to become a Business Analyst. MIS is the best major for this career path since Business Analysts have to understand both Business and Technology. If you are interested in Cyber Security I recommend earning a degree in IT, CS, or MIS, and try to get into Cyber Security after having about 5 years of work experience in the tech industry. Most Cyber Security jobs are not meant for entry level employees with no tech experience since they do not pay entry level salaries.

The thing about searching is not true. Bad developers search all the time because they don't know how to code. They don't understand the logic and they need someone else to solve the problems themselves because they, as you said, TEACH THEMSELVES BUT INCORRECTLY. I've been programming since I was 8 and while I search sometimes too, I do it only when I'm stuck with errors I cannot fix myself, which is rare. People who study alone, those career switchers, however, start coding and trust everything they see online, so they never actually get to understand fundamentals because everything you see online is mainly basics or courses that promise they will make you developers in a month and shit. Yes, you can learn to code in a few months, but I dont think you can call yourself a developer without several years of practice and good amount of knowledge. I am also self-taught, but I have thirst for knowledge and I understand that being a programmer is much more than having the ability to code (which some dont even have btw because when people are new to something they dont understand how much they dont know).
I also would like to mention that you get a huge salary, but in most cases you don't remain a developer or engineer until your retirement. The job is very overwhelming and has bad impact on people's health, so most software developers dont work until retirement.

I'm a 1st year urban planning student extremely regretting my choice of career path and degree. I really want to go into CS with the aim of getting into software engineering. I have a DDM in BTEC Level 3 ICT (UK). Really hoping I get clarity soon and can make a clear path

Don’t worry there’s lot of ppl in the same shoes as u, at least u found out what u want to do before it was too late for u to do so. I would finish this year and do a gap year. In ur gap year do a boot camp In cs which is way way cheaper than going to uni and doing a cs degree straight away, that way u rlly making sure if it’s for u so u don’t repeat any mistakes. Once u finish ur gap year and u figured it out, u can either drop out of uni and apply cs at uni or continue doing urban planning or something else completely diff.

I was thinking of doing a degree in Management and Information Technology and am wondering if this a strong enough degree to get me into Fintech or software engineering or if the alternative of Economics and Management is a better option for fintech or software engineering

I graduate with my MGIS degree soon. The flexibility in jobs recruiters hit me up for is wild to me. From Consulting at Deloitte to Software Engineering at Corporate Walmart. The degree is very flexible. But your course work, strengths and resume matter.

I have a masters in that mgt and IT and it's good for business and IT jobs. I am not sure if it is the best option for a software engineering job though. However, I see many people on work without a degree also doing software engineering jobs.
