A couple of points that might help for the next try:
    1) use a cast Iron skillet. Trust me on this, they just come out better & crisper on the outside.
    2) don't cook so many at a time. Start with 1 at a time until you get the hang of it because the oil cools a bit with each one placed into it.
    3) try putting your heat up JUST a touch more. You want the exterior to start building a crust right after the drop in & it'll come out with a better texture.
As for making it more apple-y, try using Apple Juice cooked down (makes the flavor stronger) & add Cinnamon, nutmeg, & apple pie spice. It helps. Another trick is to mix powdered sugar with a couple tablespoons of milk (2 cups powder, maybe?) until it's well-blended and smooth. Drizzle this over your fritters after they've started to cool a moment & you'll have an extra sweet kick to it. Another option is to dust powdered sugar into them.
Great first try, & they look good! Like with any fried/baked pastry, the more you practice, the better yoi get to know what heat & such works best. But definitely use the deep nine inch cast-iron skillet. It makes all the difference.

I have been reluctant to try donuts because I don't have a dutch oven. Ahhh...but I do have a cast iron skillet. Thank you for the advice. I will make these this week.

      Came out like Ribs Soup.

this looks delicious but I like to sauté the apple a bit before adding to the batter. It releases more sugar and apple flavor into the batter and the chunks of apple feel fully cooked that way.
I make these in my air fryer and use some parchment paper and they come out sinfully good.

Some tips for the glaze: There are no "set amounts", only approximations. Start with the powdered (confectioners) sugar, and add in a couple Tablespoons of the liquid plus 1 teaspoon of vanilla and stir. gradually stir in 1-2 Tablespoons at a time until you get the consistency that you want. If it's not thin enough, add a little more liquid. If you go too far and it gets too thin, just add a little more powdered sugar to thicken it back up.

We used to have an apple orchard near us that had a restaurant that made the absolute best apple fritters. Sadly, the orchard was sold to developers and is gone as are the apple fritters. So much for urban sprawl. Corn fritters are good too if you can get really good sweet corn like we have here in Illinois.

Don't use Imperial volume measurements in American recipes as they are different. Imperial pints are 20 oz while American pints are 16 oz. also imperial spoon measurements are larger. My Mum was from the East End and had separate measuring cups and spoons for using cookbooks from the U.K. or the U.S.A..

Just my two cents, that the batter looked a bit too wet. Try adding the liquid portion of the recipe slower and stop when the batter is still pretty thick, like pancake batter. And I would definitely use more apples. Essentially, it's deep frying a fruit pancake with more fruit than batter...

  • @geegs120

Fritters take a bit of practice to get right. The fritter dough looked very thin - It should be more of a sticky bread dough kind of consistency. When it is that type of consistency, when you put it in the oil, you will have to spread it out a bit to flatten the fritter. I also like to sauté my apples w a bit of sugar and cinnamon (allow to cool) before adding to batter. Good job on your first attempt - they looked good. When Alana pointed out the flour in the bowl I died laughing - she will be making her own videos soon enough!

There was a part missing from your apple peeler when you were peeling. It seemed there should have been a spacer on the opposite side from the screw. The apple should have seated on that part. The cutter seemed to have been set too deep. There should be an adjustment to move the cut outboard some small amount.
The basket on your fryer was catchimg and cooking your batter into the mesh. This caused the sticking problem. Don't use the basket. Do use tongs of some sort. Absolutely add cinnamon to taste. Add cider to taste. Sometimes, a whisper of salt can improve the sweet.
Your batter seemed thin. Be stingy when adding liquids. Your apple dice seemed small to my experience. Try for a half inch dice or better, whatever Cook's Country suggests. I have a couple of their books here at home and I use them.

What you did wrong with this recipe. Apples need cubed smaller. I think you used wrong measuring cups. The measure cup for liquid and dry ingredients are different! Batter needed to be much thicker. Also when frying should only use enough oil to fry on one side at a time that way you can control how much batter spreads and that it stays flatter. About 2-3 inches of oil probably would have been enough. They don't do well in a fry basket. Hope this helps.

You can do them in a cast iron pan but a Dutch oven is worth the investment

Try cutting back on the liquids for the batter and glaze to make it thicker. You can always add more of the liquids if needed but, you can't remove it if it is already mixed in.

cook them like stove top biscuits 1 large spoon of lard put your batter in with spoon and flip when golden brown your welcome. When I was a boy bout a million years ago, that's how we did it on a wood burning stove no less.
