What you called a dresser tray is what I have in my cupboard from my mother's house. I used to put olives and gerkins in it for the holiday table when I was about 6 or 7. I'm 70 now.

The very old round or oval wood bandboxes were made with tiny iron brads or copper fasteners and the wood surface of the outside was smoothed. Usually the top and bottom were cut from one single piece of wood not assembled from several narrow pieces. Look for subtle staining on the wood from the metal fasteners. On the underside the wood is likely darkened and shows wear.
The smaller one that I have is exactly as you described. One solid piece of wood on the bottom. Mine I use as a riser to display some of my art glass pieces, but I have to be careful because of it's age, the bottom piece of wood is cracked and a bit uneven. So I can only put something light on it. Come to think of it I don't believe I have the lid. I bought it at a church yard sale gosh more than 15 years ago.
@@trishallain6503 You might consider using a water soluble glue to adhere a popsicle stick type brace across the interior of your box bottom perpendicular to the crack to stabilize it. Water soluble glue is reversible if in the future someone wants to undo your repair.
