  • Air France - A VERY French Airline… Singapore - Paris
We embark on episode 2 of this travel series and we board a long-haul red eye flight from Changi Airport to Charles de Gaulle. The reputation of France precedes everything else. We hear of the sass, arrogance and impatience juxtaposed with warmth and friendliness of French hospitality. On this flight, we get to experience both extremes as a kind of pseudo crash course into all things French before your arrival into Paris.
Come along with me to experience this very French airline - Air France… Good and bad. And to make things even more FRENCH, let's throw in an unnecessarily complicated transit at Paris CDG! C'est très bon!

Your description of Hissy and crew reminds me of my flights with the original Olympic Airways which, back then, was a global carrier known for its rudeness and dismissiveness. It was always entertaining flying with Olympic where you never knew what kind of altercations and entertaining interactions you would witness between crew and passengers. I actually miss Olympic greatly.

Yes there are only a handful of these large old school legacy carriers left... AF KL BA IB... OA used to fly to Singapore and Sydney. As they were dying, their SYD flights went via BKK. Yes, their union protected work patterns saw them have layovers of up to 3 days at each stop on their OZ flights. No wonder they went bust.

As usual Ryan a interesting trip review . I will be following this journey on your channel. There's nothing worse after flying long-haul with minimal sleep to arrive in a place that is poorly signed, undertrained staff and generally a confusing environment. I feel your frustration mate. I hope the next leg of journey is less stressful.

A thought just came into my mind though - I was wondering if travelling between France and Malta, being two countries in the Schengen area, was the reason why your Air Malta boarding pass would not issue as your travels originated from outside the Schengen area? AF257 would have been treated as an external flight as it originated in Singapore, but the Air Malta flight, being between two countries in the Schengen area, would presumably be treated as an "internal" flight?

I actually remember being treated in a similar manner at Frankfurt Airport. It was during the migrant crisis in 2015, but everyone flying in from outside the EU was subjected to multiple security screenings and multiple checks of boarding passes. Frankfurt also didn’t allow for onwards connections and I had to go through customs and immigration before flying to Prague.

Thanks for a great video, Ryan. Probably the best flight report you have made so far. Yes it's rare for AF to disappoint with its catering even in Y class. Would have been better if you had stopped over in Paris rather than brave that CDG transfer experience. As for the routing I am surprised the flight went over Saudi and Egypt (between the Gulf and Europe) as the normal and quicker routing would be over Iraq or Iran. Maybe it was down to air congestion in that area. Looking forward to your next vlogs.

it might be a cheaper way to go another way for overflight fees etc. [It could be] issues with airways availability en route (e.g. Iran) etc."

Had you flown AF La Premiere instead of Economy Class from SIN-CDG, you would have been met by an agent at the door of the aircraft who would drive you in a car to the La Premiere lounge. Since you were connecting to Air Malta they would have probably helped you get your boarding pass in Terminal 2D.

I had similar experiences before. You must clear EU immigration at the first EU country arrived, because flying between EU member countries is like flying interstate ("domestic"), there is no international (non EU) immigration clearance/passport control when flying from France to Malta. You do need passport to travel as travel ID, but France is where u r admitted into the EU.

#1 In any case, when arriving in Paris as final destination, or conecting to another Schengen area destination, you must go through immigration. Schengen area is 27 european countries who agreed years ago to let people move freely within the Schengen area (name of the agreement comes from the city where it was first signed, in The Netherlands if I remember). Once inside schengen area, no more immigration control at airports, ports, road frontiers... So coming from singapore, unless you are NOT connecting to a Schengen country (e.g.connecting in Paris with final destination New york), you need to pass imigration to get into Schengen area. And Malta is part of Schengen, so no surprise here. That's avgeek homework for you before you fly.
#2 Then issue with the boarding pass. Air France and Air Malta are code sharing. But Air Malta is not part of Skyteam. So you can book all with Air France, but that doesn't mean Air France is allowed to issue boarding pass for Air Malta. This would have been automatic if Air Malta was part of Skyteam. That's another avgeek homework for you berfore you fly.
#3 Even French people complaign about CDG mess. It is not typically France, we all hate CDG. Specically when you're connection is Skyteam/non Skyteam. You have may notice all this boards saying "Paris loves you" at the airpport. Many French say "Paris loves you, but CDG hates you". Since you speak French, you should read about all French avgeeks reviews. CDG knows it's home work.
#4 The hissie. In France , we call them "Monique". Means grunchy FA (I know it's sexist, since Monique is a female firstname, but it comes from times when FA where mostly females). I know AF is fighting agains that behevior by training, training, training.... I am sorry you witnessed and experienced this, even more on a singapore to paris where excellence should start when competing with Singapore Airlines. And that's home work for AF. ;-)

I've taken hundreds of flights with Air France and I have to say the service is-- with very few exceptions-- extremely professional. Honestly I think you had bad luck. I have never, ever seen flight attendants wear t-shirts..And I find it very hard to believe that an international flight attendant on Air France refused to speak English, I have never once seen this in 30 years, ESPECIALLY on international flights. As for Hissy, you should really (if you haven't already done so) complain because that is unacceptable.
But you included a lot of stereotypes you included that were not necessary. I know you were trying to be humorous but not super cool.
As for the tramsfer, I have had the same experiences changing airlines... Remember that the people you are talking to at CDG are employees of Aéroports de Paris, not Air France.
I would also complain to AF about the transfer. If they have an agreeement with Air Malta they should have been able to give you a boarding pass. That is likely because of a lack of connection between AF and KM's systems. You may get some extra miles from them :-)
    Safe travels!

Thanks for your incredibly detailed and civil response! The t shirt I'm referring to can be seen during the first meal service. That's what several FAs wore around the economy class cabin. As they didn't make themselves available (aka hidden), I didn't even know they were FAs when one finally appeared to prepare for pushback. The AF/KM issue apparently has been well known from the messages I received after this video went out. As this is my first transit in CDG (other times, I've just walked out ), I'll be better prepared in the future if AF is ever involved. As for Hissy, well... Let's just leave it at that. My experiences in France would have that kind of behaviour as normal, so writing in to AF would be time I can never get back. I did enjoy the observations though. She was very well balanced with Antoinette who provided excellent service.

@@ryansofly1624 Yes, there are always some truths in stereotypes-- and many misunderstandings.
First, Paris is not France. France is not Paris. And all people are not the same in any country. Not even within the same country.
As a longterm French resident-- from a European perspective-- I really believe that yes, the French are reserved and either rigid (by Latin cultures) or too messy (Germanic/Scandinavian) but they are human. I live in Paris and yes sometimes I get disagreeable people. Other times I get rushed people. But most of the time the people I interact with want to be happy, they want connection, they aren't used to a smile but if you do sincerely, they will give you sincere smile in return.
They don't care about your ability to speak French.
What visitors often don't understand is that the disconnect comes from social codes and communication styles. To keep it simple... just say Bonjour/Bonsoir Monsieur/Madame and your experience will be entirely different.
That said, we agree on one thing- Hissy definitely needs some deep electroshock therapy!
