- Vietnam Airlines... My HONEST Long Haul Experience
We begin the homeward bound journey of this truly EPIC European travel series and the airline of choice to bring us there is Vietnam Airlines (VN). They aren't known as a top tier outfit, in fact friends who have flown them walked away less than enthused. Still, that did not stop us from giving them a fair go and ultimately decide for ourselves what is VN really all about.
You'll see that they operate an ultra modern fleet of long haul aircraft to take us the world over. The cabin crew are delightful enough there are no real faults to find. And the in-flight catering is some of the best I've experienced in economy class.
But there are still some glaring faults though which makes them somewhat rough around the edges. Come along with with me and explore what flying long haul with VN is all about.

Vietnam Airlines is amazing! I flew with them last year from Frankfurt - HCMC and the service was fantastic
Yes they are! And I cannot wait to fly them again...
You are so humble and simple. I must fly vietnam airlines
You should! Oh the food alone makes me want to return.
That was so entertaining, thank you Ryan.. Gotta say I was very impressed by your flight & service with Vietnam Airlines. The food, hot towels, bottled water given were great & I liked how your requests for extra food seemed no problem.. it’s on my bucket list… Safe travels, looking forward to your next video Ryan, great job!
Glad you enjoyed it! Every time I get such service, I just get reminded of shit our airlines are down under . 🤣
Love your video I found it very funny and informative. I just booked me and my family a holiday to Vietnam from Australia late September. I look forward to flying with Vietnamese Airways.
Enjoy Vietnam! Such a beautiful country!
The Premium Economy seats looked very nice 👍
Also the lighting was awesome
Yes that lighting before landing was mesmerising. I believe the premium economy product is similar to CX and PR.
Great vlog Ryan ... hope to catch you live next Saturday arvo. Cheers John
Howdy John! Yeah we missed you earlier on! See ya next week!
Nice that you are in Vietnam 😀 I am going Da nang in July with Vietnam Arline
I've always wanted to go to Da Nang! Well, hope you'll enjoy your trip!
My wife is Vietnamese. We've always flown SQ from Adelaide back to Vietnam until the last couple of years we've started using vietnam airlines from Melbourne and they're fantastic. Never a bad flight.
I agree... VN is excellent.
we are going to phu quo in november, and i am looking at vietnam airways for our trip: thanks for your great video
Omg I'm jealous! I've heard about how beautiful Phu Quoc is. Enjoy your trip!
@@ryansofly thanks so much, really looking forward to it
Wow Ryan , that’s impressive service . Thank you for sharing this , I will definitely consider VN for my next European jaunt . Happy travels mate .
They're very reasonably priced from OZ to EU. It's just the transit times in Saigon isn't for the faint hearted. 🤣
Another excellent review Ryan
Glad you enjoyed it! Hope to see you next week for the next episode of this series eh? Thanks for your support, as always.
Thanks for another great video Ryan other than the IFE rest if the flight looked great.
It was! And I won't hesitate to fly them again long haul. Id like to try them in business class though.
Vietnam Airlines sure has improved tremendously over the years :)
I was really surprised to see that they offer hot towels and metal cutleries on a long haul flight
Indeed! That's why I mentioned about the "old school" element because this is what Asian carriers offered 20 years ago.
I like the subtle detail of the DC 1948 flight crash :) After two and half weeks we arrived. Happy staff reflects possitve inside the guest. They have very challenging jobs as they have grumpy people to deal with and have to stay happy. Bless them in a possitive way goes a long way. :)
Yes I'll ALWAYS have a soft spot for anyone working in front line customer service.
Enjoyed, went and watched all. 😊😊😊
Oh Deb... As always thanks for your constant support! 🙏
Londoners looking at Ryan in shorts and t-shirt. "Nothing to see here". Thanks Ryan was strongly considering flying them for my Europe holiday. Your experience has 100% convinced me. I hope mate, when they start more flights here, you can try Turkish Airlines.
Hahaha suggest you wait for the entire 3-parter before you make a decision. The stopover can be very hard on your body.
I Like The Livery,25 Houers In Economy Class Is Hard Work.Great Work And Info
I'm off doing it all over again in a couple of weeks back to the UK. 😂
Love your presentation and smut comments. South Australian resident. Keep up with your good work!
Ansett 727.
Howdy fellow South Aussie!
@@ryansofly Yes I am very old school. Old Adelaide Airport (West Beach) Terminal now demolished with a bar upstairs so modern and posh at the time. Everyone is smoking and Douglas DC6B pistons pounding away with TAA and Ansett-ANA on the tarmac. They were the days free, fun, relaxed and easy.
Ansett 727.
Thanks for the review. British Vietnamese here. I never fly Vietnam Airlines from UK to Vietnam, usually its Cathay/Virgin/BA via HKG or Singapore Airlines via SIN. I'm seriously impressed with your review, looked 5 star to me. Would I fly VN? Perhaps, maybe you've swayed me...great trip report. Thank you!
I have one more VN video for this series which will be aired in 2 weeks. That'll be the final sector between SGN and MEL. Now THAT was on the newer and more modern A350. All in all, VN was a pleasant surprise and I'd fly them again even with that absolutely horrid transit time.
I have a friend from Iran, classmate flying with me to HCM City 2020, I was happy with it, similar to Thai Airways.
I love Vietnamese cuisine but my western stomach could not manage it for breakfast. But any time from pre lunch onwards, it is glorious! Thank you for the video!
Hahahaha... I hear you. My husband still cannot understand how I can eat cooked meals all day long.
It looks incredible, definitely need to fly this airline one day, sadlly that won't happen anytime soon as my family only really fly short haul with low cost airlines such as EasyJet
Never say never... You can always progress beyond EasyJet short haul to long haul on a full service airline easily. After all, LHR is one of the world's busiest international airport. Baby steps, mate. Baby steps. 😏
thanks for your review
You're very welcome!
that breakfast looks awesome. although I have to say as westerner it would be more of a lunch or dinner for me lol. it looks for a very solid flight all up.
For a foodie like me, Asian carriers are the way to go. Because they FEED YOU. On my recent flight with China Southern, the CAN-LHR flight had 2.5 meals!
Great experience
Yes it was! Cheers...
Welcome to Vietnam. I've watched many Vietnam Airlines' long-haul flights, and they all seemed to have very good service. I have only flown their short-haul and medium-haul flights, and I admit that they're not as good as the long-haul.
Thanks for popping by, mate! I actually fly to eat so VN has done well in that area as far as I'm concerned! 😏
@@ryansofly 😂😂
Thanks Ryan. I need to follow you more. As a westerner, I'm going the Asian breaky😁
Hahahaha.... It's the best type of brekky! You should see what type of brekky I had in Vietnam when I arrived! 😏
No vego option on Vietnam Airlines? 👀
Of course there is! You'd just have to arrange it 24 hours in advance before departure.
Ryan I'm from the Gold Coast and mate 10yrs ago I was looking very closely with Vietnam Airlines. What I don't understand is why Australia doesn't look at this Airline. We have to transfer through either Asia or the middle east with Vietnam Airlines my husband will definitely choose Vietnam Airlines. Mate thanks
Glad to be of assistance! But watch out for the transit times in Vietnam if you're using them to fly elsewhere. It can be very loooooong.... You'll soon see from my future episodes for this trip home.
"Either they are at your feet or at your throat" - Winston Churchill.
Ay up Ryan.
If you ever come back to the UK, would you review our train services and tell us how totally not complete and utter poo they are 😂
I recommend the Class 390 pendolino which runs with Avanti West Coast from London’s Euston station up to the likes of Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The 225 set which runs with LNER (London North Eastern Railway) from York and Leeds to London’ Kings Cross station. And then there’s High Speed 1, which until HS2 bothers to open is the UK’s only high speed railway which gives Queensland’s tilt train a run for its money (no offence), you can travel on the Class 395 to Kent from St Pancras International or the Eurostar to Paris or Brussels although double check with that one as UK/France border checks are getting tighter with these fingerprint things.
We do have the train that inspired the XPT, and that’s the HST which at the time of writing this can be found in South West England and Scotland.
And there’s plenty of heritage railways scattered all over the place, such as the West Somerset Railway from Minehead to Taunton, the Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby and Grosmont to Pickering to name just a few.
Hope all that catches your eye, hope to hear back!
Cheers! 🇬🇧🇦🇺
PS: Here’s a sub ;)
Thanks for the sub! I'll be riding the LNER London to Edinburgh in a couple of weeks! 😊
@@ryansoflyThat’s cool, though that’ll be with the new Azuma trains as the 225s and HSTs ceased operations on the Edinburgh route more than a couple of years ago. As I said, the 225s only go as far as Leeds and York.
Oh we fly from Sydney to HCM City.
Good call on the "cultural norms" so true! Last year's census revealed for the first time in our history the nation's highest salaries are from migrants of Chinese and Indian backgrounds. This trend is replicated in the US and UK as well. Attitude is a pre curser to success and of course great cabin crew.
There are some cultures with extremely strong service under tones. Thailand, Vietnam, Japan etc... it's been etched into their psyche.
Hello Ryan thanks for another objective Vlog. Seems this airline is starting to make a name for itself (as was SIA in the '70s). I wonder if some of that Vietnamese meal you enjoyed was prepared off-airport for authenticity ? I ask because MAS used to have satay prepared by a Malaysian restaurant and then taken to Heathrow. The UK manager of Jet Airways (when it operated to London) told me that catering (some of it maybe) was prepared by an Indian restaurant in Brussels before being taken to London.
🙄
The flight kitchen at LHR is very capable of preparing Asian stir fries very well. Some of the worst flight kitchens in Europe are actually FRA MUC ROM BRU... You generally do not order the Asian option if your meals are catered out of those kitchens.
MH satays are actually grilled in a secretive kitchen in KLIA and double loaded for 2 flights because their long haul flights are all turn around with little to no ground time at destination. These satays are such a closely guarded institution since the days of MSA, and SQ too has a similar satay service although not as elaborate as MH.
@@ryansofly Thanks for the explanation Ryan. I wasn't aware of procedures followed at MH as you outlined. Take care and I look forward to your next video.
Ryan the man right next to you I have a bad feeling about him
@@Lifein321 lol you mean my husband?
@@ryansofly wtf
Then you weren’t walking with him when you made it in Ho Chi Minh
Bloody hell mate..you .must have a good constitution.....lol...good for you...I admire your stamina...I hate Jet lag 😭
Haha thanks. What you didn't see was how I took a week to recover from this 2.5 week jaunt through Europe. 🤣

The way you hold the tray with your mouth open so gay
@@friedchickenlover1065 you know, from experience comments like these means the author himself is gay. So what's the story here? Are you top or bottom?
@@ryansofly your experience is not always spot on. So tell me how did you became a sarong party boy
@@friedchickenlover1065 very switched on...
Another great vlog.
It’s nice to see a RUclipsr reviewing a poorer airline without the shitty unrealistic capitalism worship silly expectations heaped upon it, that it has to set the world on fire and become the next Tesla or Apple to be ‘productive’.
How single minded.
Sometimes we just need to come back down to earth a bit.
The meals looked good and the service did too.
I was saddened by the story of the man looking for his briefcase- I hadn’t heard of it before.
I hope he is at peace- everyone deserves it when they pass.
Looking forward to the next leg of your trip. ♥️
I think most people forget how these low tiered airlines have a lot more to give because of their lower cost base. You know I love the paranormal, and in the course of research for this video - I found out Heathrow airport is one of the UK's most haunted locations. The briefcase man is just one of the many stories of LHR.
@@ryansofly I agree- the small things make the difference for these sorts of airlines- who aren’t trying to be the next Emirates- they’re there to get you from A to B and humanise they experience while doing so.
I’m very morbid and into the paranormal too- I just wasn’t expecting it to ever happen on a Ryan travel video lmfaoooo.
Maybe you should start a second channel! 😂
@@rachkate76 hahahahaha you know under my playlist BACKYARD REVEALED, I do have a couple of paranormal investigation videos I've done. It was filmed during COVID when we were all stuck in the country.
I wonder if we are thinking of the same channel. A certain RUclipsr living in Sri Lanka? If so I left his channel exactly because of this.
@@josephphillips9243 it was Rory Ding- I believe he lives in Adelaide as many popular Asian-origin travel channels in Australia seem to be.
(Ryan and Jayden)
I’ve seen him be more gracious and complimentary of other travel experiences and foods that probably didn’t deserve it- while watching him be overly critical of a country and airline brought to its knees not that long ago, was just bizarre.
I’ve unsubbed from his channel and felt his criticisms of a country that was in excessive hardship country-wide where people were dying in the streets and left with no psychosocial support either, were out of touch, cold and unnecessarily critical.
