Lots of people, specifically the Myth Busters Show, use multiple lens modern scopes to debunk what Carlos Hathcock did. My Leupold MK-4 has 13 lenses. The incident in Vietnam where Carlos Hathcock shot the Viet Cong cadre code named Cobra was true. All the people that tested the viability of the through the scope shot keeps using the wrong scope. The Cobra was using a Mosin-Nagant rifle with a PU scope. The exact same scope that was used by Soviet snipers in WW-2. This small rifle scope is a fixed 4x power scope with three lenses. Could a 30-06 Springfield bullet go through those 3 lenses? Hell yeah it can. So the Myth Busters are wrong to use a modern multi lens scope.
From what I understand a PU scope is also shorter then modern scopes, giving the bullet less length of travel through the scope and less chance to touch the walls of it.
Too bad Carlos didn’t take the Scope for a souvenir.
@@ChineseChicken1 From what my former Jarhead friends have told me. That Mosin-Nagant rifle with that PU scope. Has been framed and on display at the office of the Commandant of the US Marine Corps in Quantico. Now a perminant part of US Marine Corps history.
Whomagoose Awesome, I didn’t know.
That PU Scope is tiny compared to most modern day scopes. It is very possible the .308 could do it, but even more so, I trust the word of a Marine, especially THAT Marine!
In the Hathcock story, the other sniper was aiming at him, so that made it easy to hit him without touching the sides
The enemy was also using a PU scope that was much shorter than modern scopes
I remember they tried the song MythBusters and the bullet wouldn't go through the scope but they were using modern scopes and the older scopes if I remember correctly had a lot less glass in them that were a lot thinner and the way he saw the guy is they were in the jungle and he had a scope facing the sunlight and he saw the sun glimmer off his scope kind of like how you signal someone with a mirror and that's how he found where he was at cuz they were both tracking each other within I think it was a hundred yard radius and then he popped him through the scope. That's also how they told the story well the guy himself on the History channel I saw like about 20 years ago that's why I can't remember all of the details.
I think as a sniper he figured people would pick up on that. It's the only way you could make that shot. He was probably implying it was almost him instead.
Also was at close range. Otherwise the bullets trajectory would be to much of a arc
@@jaysmith2151 You are correct sir.
Anyone else remember when Myth Busters tried this? They "disproved" the myth because they used a modern scope, when messed with the round. When they redid it, with a period reproduction, the round went right through. But as I recall, they didn't actually shoot the weapon; they had it strapped into a vice (as I recall). So, good shooting Nick!
I was just about to say this lol
I do remember that.. also history channel did it with another sniper and period correct scope and successfully shoot through the scope. Mythbusters often had flaws but was still fun to watch. Great video reaper!
There have been quite a few things that the Myth Busters proved "False", other people proved can be done.

yeah a few seconds into the video i was like "wait, this is Matt's range?"
Nick needs to get to Scott’s range in Kentucky so he can shoot some slo- mo 🎥😎👍.
I think the fact that if Nick really wanted to, he could pick matt off from anywhere up to a mile away, means that Matt doesn't get a say in it, it's more "I'm using your range bro"
FYI: Nick was enlisted so, no need for "sir," that is reserved for commissioned officers. Matt worked for a living. 😎👍😉
@@DocMacKay819 understood. As someone who did not serve and does not have the officer connotation with the word sir ingrained in me, I use the term sir as a respectful way to address another man.
A loose scope will move when the projectile hits the objective lens. That will change the dynamics of the projectiles flight. Also, modern optics are not the same as a scope from 1944.
I think that's pretty obvious to anyone with a brain and any interest in guns .
Yea I’m sure you can find a scope from 1944 lying around

I agree, white feather was the greatest sniper of all time. I can listen to his interview over and over again. I have seen this shot tried by a few channels but I have not seen anyone try it with a fmj. Always wondered if that would make a difference. Love the video.
I just finished your book and that led me here! Keep up the great work!
I’m returning to this comment because I recently finished the SECOND book about your military career and I just can’t compliment you enough. The lack of bravado and openness about your experiences is really unique. I don’t know if a random guy commenting on RUclips can have an impact, but I hope things are going well for you.

Your channel just came up a few days ago for me while watching many of you reporting on the Trump attempted assassination. You are one heck of a man! What a shooter! I am having a great time watching your posts now! I used to shoot in competitions but they were with hand guns. I had an HK40, 9 Mil Browning, and 38 special. It was such fun! Thank you for doing what you did the military. I come from a long line of family in the military and law enforcement. Kudos to you, sir!
He’s fascinating I found his channel a year ago. A true American.
Fu*k you're such a good shot brother!🤙🏼🤙🏼 On a side note, I'm one of the chosen from the book giveaway last month. I sent you a DM and an email so BOLO! Thank you brother. Much love and respect.
Good shot there.
Remember:
-the tear in the scope casing could be the impact of the bullet shattering or driving the front lens for a short distance then shattering the lens and that could cause that tear imo
-a bullet hitting the casing would almost certainly cause a calibre "wound channel" and so i would tend to go with the above point. That flipped front lens from the air rifle gives a different view on the shot.
- i shoot 3006 bolt action BRNO with 143/155 grain fmj military bullets. They are almost same hole over leaf 3 shots at 200m (my zero range) and i easily shoot out the eye of the "buck" target. The Fmj's have a muzzle velocity of 3050fps so are super flat shooters.
If you have your platform set up, uts possible to split a sheet of paper side on at 25m....
And yes, i am also a trained vet in my mid 60's, same era about as Carlos Hathcock.
We did not have all the tech available today, so those ww2 -Vietnam era shots were raw talent. And i respect that.
I have much respect today for any military sniper doing what they doing. Its hard and mentally taxing.
Once again, good shooting man. My eyes today may not enable me to pull those stunts.
Keep on keeping on

Nick, your comment of having a helluva a headache is awesome. Great shot regardless. We're talking an inch diameter. Awesome.
Freaking awesome video Reaper! I always love your shooting wish I could shoot as good as you. If you ever try this again, a couple suggestions. 1: take the Scopes and put them in a vise aimed at your nest. 2: this will emulate the weight of the gun, and the shooter holding the gun. Hopefully letting you get a straight shot into the scope. Again keep them coming love the videos!
Nick I love you and appreciate you
You inspire me so much and I’ve been watching you for so long
Know that you changed my life and helped me so much with being happy
I hope your reading this and know you should keep fighting and making videos you are a Hero!
In the movie if both old mates were looking straight at each other like they were when the shot was fired, then it's perfectly feasible that it could travel through without touching the sides. If one was looking at the head through the his scope and the other was looking at the glint, then they would be pretty much perfectly lined up.
I love the interstellar reference in the beginning
There was a show called Myth Busters. They covered this exact same thing. When they first tried it they couldn't do it. Enough people wrote in saying the scopes they were using were modern ones with to many optics. So they went tried again and using a scope more in line that the Cobra would have used. It has less optics and went thru like in the story about Carlos Hathcock.
THANK YOU REAPER FOR YOUR SERVICE.. AND THANKS NICK FOR BEING SUCH A GOOD ROLE MODEL
I have seen someone try to recreate this on a tv show and they did it shooting an older scope that only used 2 lenses in the scope and they got the bullet to go through the scope into the eye of a ballistic gel head
These were relatively cheap scopes, used for bb guns.
I can’t recall the recent video I seen with you. But you enlighten me on why you became a sniper. And it was beneficial why you left the job. I pray for your family and that your relationship continues to grow. I enjoyed this video. Look forward to many more. I need to work on my marksmen ship I love target shooting also.
Those Gamo pellet guns are awesome I have two that I use for small varmints the accuracy, power, and quick loading makes it too easy. I was easily hitting a 6x6inch target at 80 yards I even hit the 100 mark a couple times. With the right model and ammo they can break the sound barrier, but those rounds don’t fly as straight. I shot clear through an old beer cooler at about 35 yards once I was not expecting that
Damn I love that scene so much. It’s really one of those scenes that the first time you see it, it just stays with you! Really the whole movie is like that tbh...
Hathcock, the legendary White Feather. P.S. Hey Nick, have you thought about doing collabs with others outside Demo Ranch. ‘Cause I can think of a couple of channels that would definitely be a fit for you. Saving Private Ryan, Glory, and The Patriot are my favorite war flicks.👍😎🇺🇸

Love the Hathcock story… I would’ve secured the scopes to the table or a object with some weight ( like it is when mounted to a rifle ) I would think the velocity of the rounds initial impact would move the scope dramatically.
As an air rifle enthusiast I love the air rifle bit. BB and air rifle technology has come a very long way in the last 5-10 years. You should check out a slug flinging PCP air rifle. I'd be curious to see what an actual sniper thinks of it.
was also thinking it would be cool to see him shoot a high power pcp 50cal or similar
Bruh i was literally watching you review the scenes from movies w snipers and today you upload this video ! let's go ! basically it's possible but very hard if it's under angle probably .
I absolutely love that you are making videos and finally have me some new Merch! Thank you! ❤️
I was disqualified from so many jobs when I found out I was colorblind (I found out in MEPS). I wonder many waivers Reaper needed. I know people that have colorblindness are better at spotting camouflaged item, wonder of that helped in the sniper arena.
I'm glad that you are back Reaper33, you're the best sniper especially when you tested the theory of Carlos Hathcock shot that killed the Viet Cong sniper code name The Cobra, plus I'll going to check out your new book when I get the chance
Great shooting sniper! Great job reaper! 👍🤯
Yeah....just glad you're here in Texas. Super cool that Matt gave you the keys to the castle sir! And for damned sure gonna be picking up that shirt!
Not that I'd want to see you shoot at a vintage scope since some people collect them or use them for period correct builds, but it would be interesting to see if you could find a repro of an older optic to give this a try with. Most modern optics use larger tube diameters and variable instead of fixed magnification along with different dimensions and designs. Something like the scope found on a Mosin 91/30 PU, an APX L806 found on captured French MAS 49/56, or a ZF39 you'd find on a Mauser K98k that somehow made the journey to Vietnam(this is also the same scope you'd want to replicate that shot from Saving Private Ryan).
so glad you mentioned carlos hathcock in this, the best there ever was
Even the shot in the movie seems possible, the muzzle flash caused him to look right at it as the bullet was mid flight
I dont think you are gonna have time to "look" at muzzle flash if someone shoots you
@@bawhitham23 he was only looking a foot away, he just reacted to it since he was looking through the scope as his field of vision
Cool comparison, I’ve fired thousands of pellets when I was a kid years ago. I look back on my pellet gun and pellet rifle days as fond memories. Thanks.
Myth Busters did the Hathcock shot. They found out that the new optics had a much different type glass than the 60 year old scope Carlos used. When they tried that type the bullet did blow through the scope full length. All the others would deviate erratically, some literally coming out the side. The number of lenses and the grind on the glass as well as the materials used really messed up the trajectory. Don't remember for sure but I think it was a simple 4X scope that Carlos used
I think they used a .223/5.56 on mythbusters. The lighter and higher velocity bullet doesn't come close to the penetration potential as a heavier .30 cal bullet.

Nicolas, how did you get to be a sniper with red/green color blindness? Thought that was a disqualifier for Sniper MOS. Anyway, I know you were one of our best snipers, and saved a lot of lives. Thanks for your service.
"And if you gaze into the Reaper, the Reaper gazes also into you."
The enemy sniper was using a PU scope which is shorter and less complex
Mosin Nagant PU scopes seem to only be about $400 if he wanted to do this again. Idk if theyre originals but look the same imo. He could clamp it down and shoot it point plank with a string etc.
Dude, pro? Nah, you're a master of your craft, pros look up to you. That was a helluva shot!
Remember what Mr. Hathcock said, " The only way that that could happen, is if he had me in his sights, and I was just the one a little faster on the trigger." In other words, the only way to shoot through a scope like that is if the scope is focused with it's cross-hairs, directly on your head.
Thanks Reaper! Fun watch. Always a Fun Watch. Thank you Warrior.

I got a question if you dont mind me asking, does sniping while laying down or spotting or laying down in general for long periods of time hurt your back? When I shoot the SAW and am laying down for a while or do sudden movements my lower back starts pinching, i know ur not a doctor but im just wondering since snipers are typically laying down for spotting and stuff. Maybe its all my gear from time, but thanks for another video, it was great!
My guess is the 60lbs you were lugging around everywhere had something to do with it
Sounds like you need to start doing planks and trunk twists

Glad to find your channel. Love your book. 🙌🏼🤜🏼🤛🏼
I think in order to get the shot off you need to be at a longer distance, you were still close enough that you have some height over bore issues which is probably why you caught the lower lip of the scope. Maybe at 100-150 yards with a tack driver where point of aim and point of impact are the same and bullet flight is still fairly flat.
Definitely seeking out a longer range and giving it another go. I'd have to look into how far Carlos was, but, the arc is definitely going to have an issue with cleaning straight through. I think it may puncture the lower part of the scope. But we'll have to find out!
@@ToughShooter Carlos hathcock was 1,500 yards by inch away from the enemy sniper , hope this helps 👍
@@ToughShooter Exactly. Though some rounds are flatter shooting than others all rounds travel in an arc. They are either travelling slightly upward or slightly downward making the likelihood of passing through a straight tubular structure even more unlikely. The shortened length and perhaps wider diameter of the Soviet scope In used on the Mosin Nagant in Vietnam might increase the odds. If the round were nearer the end of its travel it might even deflect of the interior of the scope without rupturing it. In any case incredible shooting by Mr Hathcock and a pretty nice shot by yourself going right through the poor dummy’s orbit.
@@margueritefile5645 No way shot happened at that range.....arc of bullet would never allow for it to happen, 30.06 is in a huge downard arc at that range...

Bro keep making videos you are hands down my favorite person ever to find because of demo ranch. Much love!
I think what people who say it wouldn't work due to the slight arc of the bullet is that scopes, escpecially old ww2 ones, were metal tubes and that bullets can easily just be guided by that metal tube as long as the tube isn't too in the way of the bullet.
The arc at further distance for sure has a play in it. But definitely could slide its way down the tube
First video that I've seen of yours by yourself and I loooovve it ! Thank you!
The break action pellet rifles are very accurate. I think it's safe to say the accuracy of the rifle generally out performs the skill of the shooter, except in your case Sir. Well done! Check out Shooter 1721 with his trick shots using pellet rifles.

@@NikiReynolds_2swift ❤️❤️❤️
Carlos had excellent conditions and is probably in the top 3 of all time, up there with Simo hayha. Other factors would be that someone was holding the gun so less chance of the scope bouncing around on impact.
All these things add up to a strong possibility it's real. A 1 in a million shot doesn't have to happen every day, it just has to happen once. Even Michael Jordan sucked sometimes, but his good days outweighed his bad days by far, same thing with Hathcock.
