Porsche 718 Cayman 2.0 Ep 6 - Manual with PASM & Sport Chrono vs the Base

  • Nov 11, 2021 UPDATE! I just received confirmation from the Porsche 718/911 program boss Frank-Steffen Walliser - the 718 has only two engine mappings. So the Sport+ on a Manual car combines Normal engine mode with stiffer PADM and PASM. I also want to add that the rev-matching can not be deactivated by changing the PSM mode.
    Does the manual two-liter Cayman need the Sport Chrono Package or the adaptive suspension? How these options transform the character of the simplest Porsche there is?

      fair comment, seeing that on video get’s boring instantly, however as someone who recently had a first drive in a 992 turbo, launch mode is properly ridiculously savage, and it’s hard NOT to react like that the first few times you experience it.

    In response for comments on Sports + mode. I purchased a 2021 718 Cayman T (manual) in May and now have 10200 miles. I’ve tried all modes in every possible combination. Sports mode dumps more gas in for crackles and pops on over-run, which is why the valve are open by default with Sports Exhaust. Sports + doesn’t open up the valves as soon. The reason, according to the Porsche dealership is to maintain turbo boost pressure at lower RPMs that would be lost to the exhaust valve being open. There is a PASM “Sport” mode that you did not cover in the video. This is enabled by deactivating the traction control, which is done by holding down TC button for 5 seconds. More rear tire spin is allowed and the back end rotates nicely when under power slide. I have not spun the car. Some TC may still be on. However, PASM Sport permits a drift style of driving. I believe this is the best mode for sports driving. Also, the 2.0 turbo loves octane! I run 1/3rd tank 101 octane and the car is noticeably quicker. No problem to smoke the tires on launch with Sports + and PASM Sport modes on.

I currently drive a BMW but feel a Porsche 718 is in my future and your discussion of the various options helps sort out what is truly important. However, because I've been following you for the last 15 years, I miss those crisp metaphors, which you typically add to your Russian reviews. Like in 911R, when you have compared gear change with gun reloading and etc. I think that it makes a very strong technical review with some "human in the machine" feeling. Eventually, it helps the audience better understand what you are dealing with. wish you good luck. subscribed.

    Dear Mike! I want to congratulate you on your channel! Filling a gap! I’m planning a Cayman purchase, I discovered this place by accident two months ago. Unfortunately, it is not possible to try the basic model in small markets. In Hungary, there is not even a manual transmission that can be tested as a car at the moment. I want a basic car.
    Anyway, I will often use nearby trips in the Balaton Uplands. Narrow, winding, sometimes bad-surfaced, but wonderful. But he also often visits the magnificent passes of the Italian and Austrian Alps. There is also a lot of highway and main road driving. This makes my dilemma more understandable. Lower ground clearance is not a problem for me.
    My question is mostly about PASM.
    I use the basic AR Giulia for daily driving! :-) Great car! It's already the second. The 1cm higher suspension was certainly felt as I sat from the old car to the new one. The old narrow, base tires slipped sooner, but the drift remained much more controllable. The newer one stands higher (why ???) and I feel less easy to steer, otherwise the rear axle starts with the wider tires, less collected. I can feel the center of gravity change of the whole car. I don't like that feeling.
    My question is, does PASM interfere with these rolls artificially, or does it just lower the center of gravity causing smaller body rolls?
    I like to feel that I or my car is in control right now. A sense of speed is just as important to me as a driver involvement.

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  3 года назад +1

      As far as I can tell the PASM can change the damping settings for each strut individually according to the load. Therefore it does have a certain anti-rolling and anti-diving effect.

      @@ForeverManual Thank you very much for your quick reply! Then I probably won’t configure it, even if I like to sit closer to the ground.
      I think engineers can come up with a single good compromise solution for a sharper car. Moving something up or down without changing important chassis elements involves changing the geometry. This causes the compromise to disintegrate.
      All that was left was to try the basic session. The cars on sale are all Sport plus seats. I need to ask someone for the test who has a car with basic seats.
      I look forward to the next performance on your channel!

    first time seeing your video - really good, helpful, useful content, and your english is excellent! I am seriously considering a base 718. I live in canada, and my local dealer has to order the car from germany, so you can spec it however you want which is great. I am thinking of just keeping it simple. It will not be my daily driver, and I won't do track days, but I love to go for spirited drives in the country on weekends, so it will be manual and basic.

    Although many said it before I have to tell you that I loved that video. Very informative. What I didn't understand really is, how the difference in the steering feel between these two cars comes. Both had Power Steering Plus?
    I am watching videos before getting mine next week. I didn't option the Power Steering Plus because I like a heavy steering feel. And I also couldn't test drive the car before buying it. Not that any Cayman were at my local dealer. Only once so that I tested the seating position because I am quite tall...

    • @ForeverManual

      Thanks. Yes, both cars in the video have it and yet they feel different, although the margin is small. People who don’t have PSP write to me that they would like to have it at the end, because the steering is heavier mostly during parking when most of us don’t want it to be. Fortunately it’s one of those features that can be retrofitted by your local dealer later upon request🤗

For general cruising l always have it in sport mode for the deep base tone l get from my straight pipe exhaust set up. Freeway driving is always in normal mode in auto for low revs, fuel consumption & low cabin noise. (16 718BS)

    the final conclusion, for me, is extremely unexpected. i don't thinked about how the dealer demo-car made me wish more options. And I don't think that it's a politics of Porsche, may be it's our dealers feature (in our country) - to sell you more options. May be it's a result of second-hand market, where more option's auto have a higher price. I don't know, but it can be. Sorry about my English, my Russian better )))))

    "Why would you do that?" Re: linear throttle in sport+. From my perspective I can't understand why anyone would want to have a non-linear throttle, which is what sport mode and a ton of aftermarket things do. If I want more throttle I'll push more, I don't need a throttle that the last half of the throttle does virtually nothing because it just made 0-40% behave like 0-80%. It also means you have finer control, so if you want to give it a little throttle out of a corner, sport mode mapping might give too much and you'll lose the back end. Non-linear throttle maps just make you THINK the car is faster, but really its taking away fine control. Sport+ also gets rid of the fake pops/bangs which in my opinion is a good thing, as i don't like them. I do agree not being able to properly deactivate Rev Matching is silly. Not sure what's going on with the clutch differences. There shouldn't be anything different.

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks for sharing. Things that you’ve said would totally make sense if there was any idea behind S+ on a manual car. However, as you can see in the pinned comment, there is none. It’s basically a blank preset left from sharing a programming with a PDK car. So the rest is only a projection of what you believe S+ is good for🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @cratervanawesome
      @cratervanawesome 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@ForeverManualthere must be a language barrier here. My car is a manual. I've not said there are different engine mappings as far as power goes, however it does change things even on the manual. An obvious few being throttle maps and removing fake exhaust pops and bangs and rev matching (and engine mounts etc). You may not value those things, that's why it's an option that everyone is free to choose or not but you can't claim it does nothing for a manual car. The way you speak about it makes it sound like you have an issue with it's existence which just makes you sound like you're trying too hard to justify not spending the money on it to yourself.

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  11 месяцев назад

      I read your first comment more carefully - fair point on linearity for some people, thanks.
      The problem is that I don’t feel Normal mode to be that linear. Not that the Sport is any better in this regard, but it’s more responsive and I feel more in control on slow corner exits.
      And I don’t need the throttle to do anything else for the second half of the pedal travel but to stay open on the track.
      What I don’t understand is what happens with the PSE valve in S+. It sounds like it stays closed, although it would block big chunk of exhaust system from being used, creating bottle neck for exhaust gases.
      Am I right assuming that the PADM is a two stage system, therefore the PADM setting is no different in S+ to the Sport?
      Enjoying this topic, thanks.

    • @cratervanawesome
      @cratervanawesome 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@ForeverManual The pops and bangs aren't related to the valve/PSE settings, so it doesn't affect performance in Sport+. In sport mode those pops and bangs are artificially created by allowing small bits of fuel through on deceleration. This also creates more heat which is obviously a bad thing. This is why Sport+ disabled them, for better on track performance.

      Bad driving is a complicated matter. The dash-stuff you see on RUclips originates not only in lack of driving skills but also in a poor discipline as well as a bad road infrastructure. And those two things are looped together. Some Russian regions are famous for having an incredibly high average level of driving skills among general public. Places like Karelia which is close to Finland with its twisted forest roads, Eastern or Southern regions with mountain roads.

    In my 991.2 Carrera T, I've compared back and forth between normal, sport, and sport plus and in that car Sport Plus is a much more direct and 1:1 feeling compared to both Normal and Sport, the engine feels like it gives you a much more accurate response in line with what you ask of it from the gas pedal. It also feels much more normally aspirated compared to normal and sport, which gives more of a surge of power like a normal turbo motor.
    Interesting how the 718 only has two maps. Almost sounds to me like they design one to feel fast and the other to be easier to modulate when at the limit.

      Thanks! You do notice the 20 mm drop, but then a set of higher OEM springs don’t cost a fortune. The T is a smart choice as long as you keep it basic. It’s the only 718 offered with fabric seats that don’t require ventilation. As you start loading options to the T it looses it’s advantage over the Base which gives you more freedom in speccing your car, broader choice of colors and better value for money.

      @ForeverManual  2 года назад +2

      I have. Being the cars of less restrictive ages they are indeed more responsive. The 718 is relatively good for a turbo car, and it allows you to correct the line with the throttle mid corner. You better be high on revs though.

    but other than that - 2liter cayman is great for basic track driving.

    Euhhhh I m sorry but with a PDK, the sport + mode clearly affects the throttle response and does not correspond to the normal mode. I can t speak for the MT, but with the AT, there is clearly a difference between sport + and normal mode on the throttle reponse. Also the sport + supresses the pops and bang which are present in sport mode.

    Which 718 has the most comfortable suspension ?

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  Год назад

      That would be the topless version of the silver car from the video - a two-liter Boxster with standard PASM and 18-inch wheels. The same specification would provide you with the best ride quality among Caymans. Although all 718s are stiff, some are just stiffer than others.
      If I had access to a spare parts bin, I would also consider trying to fit some base 981 shocks, springs, and bump stops onto my 718. The previous generation car was significantly softer in both PASM and non-PASM versions.

    I’m looking to buy the 718 Cayman GT4 2021 as a daily driver, do you believe it’s a good daily? Not to go to work but just driving around everyday. Thanks

    • @ForeverManual
      @ForeverManual  2 года назад +3

      I seem to be wrong person to ask. I like using my car on 110% of its capabilities. Having a GT4 as a daily means using small portion of it most of the time and not even the best portion. Unless you live nearby the race track and use it as a route for commuting 😉 See what I mean?

      @@ForeverManual Yes, fully understand your point. I’m more a type that wants a cool looking/ fast car but dont want to race with it. It’s cool that you realize what you need it for👍🏻All 4.0 718s are definitely not a city cars in my opinion - too stiff, too noisy, the gearing is too tall. They need space, speed. This engine loves to be revved high. Otherwise it kinda doesn’t make sense. You will look cool in one of these up to some point, but if you buy the car which is faster than you, it has a tendency to make you look stupid one day😉
