One of the most gifted and influential bassists in history!!! Jaco is often imitated but never duplicated!!! To take a line from the movie Highlander "There can only be one."
Please take note of the eye contact. Those guys were ALL capable of going off on whatever tangent they wanted to, but they literally held it together by maintaining eye contact. That's just amazing. Echoing some of the other comments in this thread: I'm happy that this was the music of my youth!
I remember reading a quote where Jaco said he could play the Blues in "F." Just think if he was still alive back then. The music would be Psychedelic Fuzion.
Try Jaco’s first solo album. Tunes like Portrait of Tracy, Continuum etc. The album is full of sublime moments. Still unique bass playing but less over the top than he can sometimes be.
Try Kenny Gorelick soprano solo on "Night Love" Album "Galaxian " Jeff Lorber Fusion 1981. Acuna tambien hizo cosas que no eran Jazz. Open minded no solo Ellington is Jazz.
I'm willing to be corrected here. Could somebody please post a link where Jaco actually creates BEAUTY and is more into deepening and supporting the piece of music the band is playing? All I hear is a show off. It's always all about HIM. "See how great I am? I'm the best!". Technical virtuosity only goes so far, by itself. As Zappa reportedly told Steve Vai, "We're here to play MUSIC, NOT sports!" So someone please post a link where he creates sublime beauty, and/or lifts the other band members to create that overall effect. ............please?
Serious? With Weather Report, the album Heavy Weather. With Joni Mitchell, the live recording Shadows and Light, and the album Hejira. With Pat Metheny, his debut album Bright Size Life. To name a few outstanding recordings.
Weather report with Jaco was the best. Very unique and entertaining. Peace & Love

Look at Zawinul’s face
Portrait of Tracy is the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Only Jaco on bass nothing else. Definitely listen to that song
