  • Logic Pro just dropped their brand new Mastering Assistant. This means that you have a new INCLUDED option for FREE (assuming you already own Logic) that can... potentially give you pro mastering on your tracks? But how does it REALLY stack up against what professionals use in the studio on a normal basis? X O'Connor (GRAMMY winning producer) dives in to compare.
In case you missed the announcement from Apple, here's a quick summary:
Apple has released a significant update to Logic Pro for both Mac and iPad, enhancing the music creation process with new features. The Mastering Assistant helps users fine-tune their mixes, ensuring professional quality by adjusting dynamics, frequency, and loudness. On Mac, Logic Pro introduces 32-bit recording for higher audio quality and two innovative tools: Sample Alchemy, which transforms audio samples into new sounds, and Beat Breaker, a plugin for reshaping and resequencing audio.
For iPad users, Quick Sampler Recorder mode has been added, allowing the capture of sounds via the built-in microphone to create custom instruments. Improved multitasking features and project round-tripping between iPad and Mac enhance workflow flexibility. New sound packs, improved browsing, and additional in-app lessons further support creators in exploring these updates.

I work with Logic since it ran, under another name, on the Atari 1040. Nevertheless mastering was always a myth to me. A friend of mine did it for me. But now I am sure I can get where I want (including your advice on some extra eq and compression) with this fantastic tool. Thank you a lot for this unbiased test.

@@mhavockWhy would you give that horrible advice not to do it? Unless you work inside the Apple ecosystem you may not realize the genius of this mastering tool. Like all Apple tools, the more you work with it, there is massive power inside each tool… most only use 25% of each tool’s true potential. Even the most bare synth VST inside Logic can do what most paid VST’s do and more.

My mastering chain is Logic's stock adlimiter, the stock channel EQ, the stock Gain, and the Logic Pro X Loudness Meter. If a mix seems lacking highs I put either the Steven Slate Fresh Air on top of the chain, which is my only outboard plugin, and/or the stock Exciter at the top or bottom of the chain, depending on what type of overhead enhancement I want to enable. After these chain elements, I put the Loudness Meter on the bottom to measure the LUFS. The Logic Pro X Mastering Assistant is good, but how I have used it does not top my chain. However, I have yet to use the Loudness feature and the EQ slider on the Assitant module, which will be my next project's objective.

Please Please Please match the GAIN whenever you compare the difference between plugins. It annoys me so much when people compare the sound of different things when the gain isn't matched. A louder volume will generally make people think it sounds better.

Wow! Really cool tool! Logic has done it again! It's like Logic's version of Ozone. That being said, I'm with you. I like your chain better, but like you said, there's lots of dollars on that and more analog vibe, Ozone and the Inflator which are total cheat codes, lol. But man! this is going to be so valuable for people who like to add some shine onto their rough mixes when they share them via social media or during the song writing process. In addition, even though it analyses i think its super nice that you get to manually adjust its recommendations. I believe that already understanding basic mastering chains helps you see the value in this new tool. You get EQ, metering, loudness, spread in one tool. I'm going to use if for quick and dirty improvements of social media audio. Imagine how much turn around time can be eliminated if you get good at using this tool to master your music before you dub it back into your quick share videos. And yes, i agree with the guy below...that's a really good song.

You hit it at the end. If you use mastering assistant, as an assistant, in conjunction with your mastering chain, it works wonderfully. I think MA gets you right about there but if you put a pultec or other eq on prior to, it rounds it out. Try it with your regular mastering chain, then add MA at the end, re-analyze it, and see if you like it.

my preference would be to use this with dynamics set to zero in combination with the Pro-L2, which i think does a better job of limiting. you could also use this as an analysis tool to get an idea of where you might be able to improve your eq. if you just wanted to throw out a quick master for a demo, this would be invaluable. i'd like to see someone run it up against the Lurssen mastering console, just for comparison.

You might have missed the fact that all the mastering plug-in does is things possible with the built-in plug-ins since 2013. It's just a comprehensive skin that does them a bit more elegantly. Once you learn and understand them, it's patently obvious you could have accomplished the exact same things all along.

-9 is too loud. Outside of that both methods sound great.

Some say the "assistant" is cheating. I disagree. It's there to put the shine on an already nice mix. It's not a turd polisher.

Love Logic. Been using it for all most all my life. But if you are really serious about your audio stay away from the stock plugins. Every time i use them i feel like the audio is degraded...

I just finished a song. The master assistant sounded amazing. Its awesome. Then I shared it to iTunes... now it sux. It sounds small and flat. A great party in somebody's elses house. I just bought Ozone this morning. I'm not even going to bother. Are we all in denial. As soon as a song gets formated into a wave or mp3 the dynamics go bye bye. Frustrated and done.

      You are doin something wrong
      My wav sounds awesome
But I pretty much mix/master then see what it did
      Was about the same
      Wav doesn’t flatten your mix

@13thJ Hey you're right. What i meant to say is what ever file iTunes take. Mp3s or something. . I just heard my Wave file. It's perfect. But how do I share it with anyone?

Apple Music has a different format if that’s what you mean by ‘sharing to iTunes’ the whole business of mastering is so complex I’m going to pay an engineer then specify for Spotify or Apple Music or cd because they are all different formats

    • @13thJ
      @13thJ 7 месяцев назад

@@hilaryburrows9487 that makes absolutely zero sense. No matter which platform you choose at the end of the day the best audio file you can upload is going to be a WAV
People on Spotify or people on Apple Music will determine the outcome of your results based on the stereo, system, headphones, or whatever speakers they are going to listen to your music on.
So you could pay an engineer to specify whether you want it mixed for headphones or whether you want it mixed for a club or for a car stereo but you’re never going to be able to specifically dial in a mix for Apple or Spotify
