- An edition of the long-running BBC radio panel game. In the chair John Julius Norwich. The teams: Dilys Powell and Frank Muir challenge Antonia Fraser and Denis Norden.
As broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 30 November 1980.
This show _made_ my weekend. In the early-to-mid-'90s our local NPR affiliate out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, would air episodes of My Word leading in to Whad'Ya Know? on Saturday afternoon. So often I found myself scheduled to work on Saturday in that era so just prior to entering the facility to begin my shift I'd treat myself to listening to these clever folks on My Word which helped to put me in a relaxed state of mind. It's now been decades since I had the pleasure of listening to the show in-tandem with my preparations for work but I remember them all as sunlit and pleasant days because that's what nostalgia does.
was s to meet you on lf 4 but fi
Huge thanks for bringing this to RUclips. My Word and later and to a lesser extent My Music gave me hours of pleasure back then and thanks to you I’m able to enjoy them again. Muir and Norden never failed to amuse, always respectful of the intelligence of their audience. Sadly missed. Thanks again.
I'm delighted to find this. It aired at 1030 pm Sunday night in Boston and I would have to be at work at 1100. Needless to say I was always 5 minutes late and the better for it. God Bless the BBC!
Anymore episodes of this wonderful,
delightful radio show will be very much appreciated. Paul Bacchus
The BBC has an on-line archive of episodes.
Oh My Word! Thank you. Growing up we never had a television set as my parents felt it discouraged reading and imagination. This brings back so many wonderful memories of word play, family interaction and good times.
PS: still no television set in my home.

No television set but you’re watching RUclips
@@andywatts8654 True :) But not on a daily basis.
I had no idea these were on utube. As a child, sitting in my garden in Africa, I would listen to many British radio shows. This one was my favourite. What a find!
The incomparable game...Frank Muir and Denis Norden were at their priceless best in this show . Wit with a capital w...seldom savoured nowadays.
They don't make 'em like this anymore. Refreshing. Thanks so much for posting.
I remember listening to My Word and would have been ten here - in my last year at junior school back then!
I miss this so much.
I remember NPR used to run these shows on the weekends while I was living in Newport News Va late 80's early 90's. They had great programing. Lots of BBC stuff. Also got hooked on Car Talk back then. Great memories of driving back down from Boston and catching and hour or 2 of Car Talk at night as I got closer to home.
Oh my yes!! As soon as I clicked on this I had a flashback to hearing this on NPR (in the good old days). I loved this and Car Talk as well.
Why cant we have radio like this anymore
Fabulous listening ...incomparable to game shows of today.
I agree in principle that it is better…wittier and more generally entertaining. Nothing crude and no foul words as we are getting more and more of these days.
I listened to these when I was a kid in the 1960s and still recall fully the story that Frank Muir told to incorporate the word SUPERCALIFRAGIALISTICEXPALIDOCIOUS
It was inspired.
Incomparable to anything ever, really. Completely different to any show of its time.

I always tuned into the A.B.C. for 'My Word' back in the 1960's.
Fabulous show.
Tell me about love
Tell me tender things again
Your beautiful speech
My heart is not tired of hearing it
Provided that always
You repeated these supreme words
I love you
in australia the national broadcaster used to programme BBC shows like My Word, Just A Minute etc at 5:00 am before lurching into the days current affairs. i would wake up just before 5 , listen to the show then have a leisurely shower, coffee and cigarette and god was it wonderful. at some point the agreement with the BBC, allowing the ABC to broadcast these programmes, was
trahed so no more early morning entertainment for me!!!
Who remembers The Pie Rates of Penn's Aunts; or There are Fairways at the Bottom of Our Garden? I join others (below) in pleading for more episodes.
Norman is in Ireland, and I think they're for 1 am.
Thank you for posting. Also broadcast on The BBC World Service. (Aka; the wild service)
Julian Of Norwich - Anchorites away to keep one's word.
So civilised.
Sad to hear about the death of Denis Norden this week. Very appropriate tribute.
Well he wouldn't have dared sing Are You Lonesome Tonight on this programme. Lines learnt in the projection room.
Parlez-moi d'amour
Redites-moi des choses tendres
Votre beau discours
Mon cœur n'est pas las de l'entendre
Pourvu que toujours
Vous répétiez ces mots suprêmes
Je vous aime
Yes! Thanks. Any more?
brilliant in the right sort of way
Top quality edutainment. Sorry for that ugly description.
more por favor
I listened to these broadcasts on the CBC on summer days while picking raspberries. I wondered why the ladies were not asked to create a story like the men were. The ladies equalled the intelligence of the men. Perhaps on an alternating week basis.
Never the Mark Twain shall meet JMW Turner's Slave Ship.
I love this show! Anyway I can find a dvd collection set?
not sure if you guys cares but if you guys are stoned like me atm you can watch all the new movies and series on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my girlfriend lately =)
@Leroy Beckett yea, I've been watching on instaflixxer for years myself =)
Sad loss.
This programme very neatly demonstrates how far Auntie has sunk into mediocrity.
There are exceptions, e.g.Melvyn Bragg's 'In our time' but among those with longer memories the Beeb has become radio woke.
