  • Zhenjiang is just on the south bank of the Great Yangtze River. Not the most visited of Jiangsu Province's cities, but one full of history! In this video we will visit some famous hills and temples, add a couple of pagodas to the list and have a look around the old British concession.
    Enjoy!

Zhenjiang is on the south bank of the Yangtze River. In the long history of China, especially during the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties after the Three Kingdoms period, Zhenjiang was often the front line of confrontation between the divided northern and southern regimes of China. The Yangtze River is very wide in this section, forming a natural barrier, but it also left many historical allusions to this land. Thank you very much for NICK's personal visit and introduction and hard editing work, I wish you all the best!

Pearl S. Buck spent her childhood in this town, she learned Chinese first before learning English, also received writing training in this time period. In her biography she described her life in this town including the British consulate building and the pagodas. Great video and thanks Nick!

(11:27) VR - "Victoria Regina." The reign of Queen Victoria was from 1837 to 1901, left a mark on this ancient town.

@@nickinchina2552 Add 100 years to 1837-1901, we get 1937-2001. Lines up with that infamous century coming into the consciousness of the revolutionaries in modern China.

Didn't know what VR meant prior nor did I even catch that detail on my own! Now I know what to look out for on other British buildings I think are from that time period.

I guess a lot of old British concession buildings will have it...her reign was 1837 to 1901 which covers a huge amount of the 'concession' time

I have been thinking about this and I think there is a difference between perception. There is a romantic notion of the old China and certain nostalgia attached to these traditional sites. But to the most Chinese who have lived here for generations, the past is mixed with the present. It is where it is and it is what it is and what it has been and always be.
