Thank you for the helpful video. I watched one involving grades of sandpaper and clear spray. Thought I would give yours a try before the possible ruin of my headlight casing. It worked! I wish I'd taken pictures, but I was in a hurry. Thank you so much. I had all items you used. This means, I did it for no further cost. Super demonstration. I put a light wax on it - looks amazing. From opaque, yellowish to bright and clear!
Just a couple things to mention: Don't use window cleaner with ammonia!!! If the ammonia and the vinegar happen to mix, that will possibly cause you to make a trip to the E/R! Another tip: Just use plain water in place of the vinegar. To be sure it wouldn't affect the outcome, we tried it both ways on a junkyard vehicle. When completed with the same amount of effort on each, the results were indistinguishable. The Yard's owner has them hanging in the store area for sale now!

Thank you! I can't imagine why vinegar would be necessary. It helps indoors with smells and stains but isn't the gentle abrasive of baking soda what is needed here? Water should work fine. Thanks again!

This actually works. I tried it tonight, and was shocked by the results. Thank you, Banshee Moon. You saved me lots of $$$, by doing it myself and following your instructions. I even applied the concoction to my wheels and it took off the oxidation and grime.

@@jonyrock Don't put clear coat on your headlights it refracts the light differently and either makes your headlights not as bright or worse, refracts the lights in a different direction into oncoming traffic

WOW!!! I am really blown away!!! Thank you so very much for this video. I just got through watching a video on cleaning high lights, however they were using an, “AS SEEN ON TV” product and charging $19.99 for a little box. Sure it may be convenient because everything is supplied in the box, however if one has just plain vinegar and baking soda, it’s more economical to use what you have at home. That’s what I thought essentially to myself. There’s nothing wrong with trying to save a few $$$, especially in these days and ages. So I do have these products and I will definitely give this a to clean my head lights, because they are yellow as the sun. Thank you so very much, once again. God Bless!!!

Great video! One suggestion for anyone doing this at home. Pop your hood and open it so you don't have to Rory about getting anything on your hood. And maybe just a strip of painters tape around the bottom and sides to protect your paint and finish. Save that money. The "kits" online and in your box retailers are selling you the same thing with a couple applicators.

You mentioned that doing this will increase the “perceived value” of your vehicle when selling it. That’s excellent advice. I have looked at used cars that are filthy and full of trash. I don’t expect a used car to look like brand new, but if you take an hour or so to clean your vehicle and make it look well cared for, you will sell it quicker and get a better price for it. If I look at a car and it is filthy and full of trash, I’m going to assume that the person who owned it probably didn’t care for the rest of the car any better. The same principle applies to a lot of items people may be selling. I have gone to flea markets and passed on so many items that I would have bought if the owner had just taken a minute or two to clean it up a bit. I’m not talking about things like normal dust. I’m talking about things that look like people have spilled food (or other gross stuff) on and then expect you to buy it. Appearance is everything when buying and selling. I was actually looking for a video on cleaning plastic when I found this. I’m restoring a 1968 Hallicrafters Civil Patrol receiver and someone used a marker on the clear plastic dial face to mark where to set the radio. Because the dial face is irreplaceable and too many chemical that will dissolve the marker will also affect the plastic, I’m doing a lot of research before trying anything more than the soap and water that I’ve already tried. Even something as benign as rubbing alcohol can affect some plastics. Anyway.... nice video. Well presented. I’ll have to remember this trick if I ever need it. Heck, it might even be the trick to removing the marker stains on that dial face. Take care!
This worked just great on my 1999 Saturn. So much yellow came off on the rag. I had no clue you could clean the headlights this way. I thought the plastic was a gonner. My headlights look great now, and I did put a coat of wax on them for protection. This is so easy I won't mind having to do it again and again if I have to.
They look pretty good. I sanded mine with one of those two sided sanding pads and sprayed it with clear coat, did a fantastic job.

Just went & did it myself after watching.
I literally just tried this on my 2002 Jaguar X Type just to see if it worked and IT REALLY WORKS THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. You just saved me so much money because I was going to buy a new headlight because of how the oxidation made my car look older than it already is but I had both baking soda and vinegar as well as winded in my household so this was perfect. Also retailers charge $35 to do this and I’d rather spend a little under $5 with something I can do myself than spend unnecessary money to accomplish this same look.

Thanks - not only is it cheaper, but do-it-yourself stuff with basic ingredients is also just plain fun. We can quit paying for things like Windex, too. When the bottle is empty, replace with white vinegar & water, adding just a drop of whatever liquid soap you like - dish soap, shampoo or whatever. It's actually the finest window-washing product I've ever used.
While I doubt it makes a significant difference, just for full disclosure I'm using acidic water - but I'd use tap water if I didn't have this lovely purifier that can also separate out the acidic from alkaline stream. ;)

I tried it this morning, it actually works, super impressed.
Just did this procedure with rubbing compound in between, and painted with 3 coats rustoleum 2x clear gloss uv , worked great on a 2003 corolla! (previously used avocadoe , and also turtle wax restorer but only lasted 2 months. Great video, Thank You Banshee Moon!!

I use blue painters tape around the edge of the headlight..it protects the finish surrounding the light and p[eels off easy after cleaning.

Yahoo and Wahoo! I tried this and it worked on my Tundra's headlamp lenses. It took about ten minutes to do both of them. This is a cheap and effective solution to a common problem. Thanks so much for the tip.
Aww, man, this was the BEST!! I thought the toothpaste method video I just saw would be the bomb, but it appears that you get great results without all the Dremel buffing and time consuming method. There is a lot to be said for good old fashioned vinegar and baking soda. The two do a heck of a lot around the house. I can't wait to try it. Thanks!

Another tip, after you got them all nice spray some non-yellowing clear coat ( like 8 bucks a can) over them and seal them up.
I do believe there is a manufacture fix for this. The auto industry should be ashamed by the chronic cloudy headlights. Smarter cars but cloudy headlights...?

Well they used to be glass but I guess those had problems too. I'm not a car person so you tell me: did they break? Or is plastic just cheaper? Your point is a great one: so much fancy car stuff, but the headlights get cloudy!
I love watching these, because they fog back over afyer a few days at most weeks. All it takes is a 20 dollar kit fron your local autostore and even the walmart autosection and you can buy a kit with 500g, 800g and 3000g sand paper and a clear coat and youll get a clear headlight for years to come. Its worth the money and effort to do it versus doing it every few days/weeks

Once you have your headlight lenses cleaned up, you can spray paint them with clear lacquer that has UV blocker in it. This will help stop the lenses from yellowing again. OR you can apply the lacquer before they are discolored and avoid having to scrub them clean in the future. Be sure to clean all oils off the lenses first and mask all areas around the lenses so you don't get over spray on your painted parts.

Tried this on my 2006 Camry and 2008 4-Runner today. Both were pretty heavily frosted and the results with this simple approach were phenomenal. I’ve spend $25 in the past for a kit that did half the job these two simple ingredients and some elbow grease did. Thanks for making this very helpful how-to!

Perfect explanation and also good job. If you want clearer finish, use Rust-Oleum Clear Coat spray. Spray lightly for 3 coats.
Good job. Minor correction, baking soda is just a mild base it actually will neutralize acids or bases. Very handy, versatile and inexpensive product.

Banshee Moon The Deet in bug spray actually "melts" your headlights, it gets tacky to the touch and only lasts for a day, tops.
Piatequila oh stop it. The plastic will stay in landfills and will be mined out in the future, along with aluminum, copper, silver ect.. Anything with value. Landfills are goldmine of the future

Just tried it and it definitely works. my headlights looks brand new though. i must admit, i used baking soda paste only. Reason being i think the acidity of the vinegar could damage the paint. The low ph of the baking soda is perfect. Took about 3-5 mins of rubbing to make it look new.
I found the polishing compound for automobile paint also works very well. I found toothpaste also works very well for polishing plastics. The compound works a bit better than the toothpaste. After polished, it is best to protect the surface with some car wax.

Yes yes I’ve been using Mothers aluminum mag polish to fix fogged up motorcycle speedometers and gauges for years, it works much better than headlight restoration kits. Mothers also is great for polishing aluminum swing arms to look chrome plated.
for max results use pair gloves
and wipe clean with brake fluid

I'm going to have to try this on my vehicles. I agree with others about glass headlights. They never did this. I also think it would be safer to drive at night with glass headlights because they don't become dull.
Bob - You can also use a metal polish like Flitz and a towel to clean the haze from your headlamp cover.
I have a 98 Forrester with glass lenses. With quality bulbs, my headlights are brighter than most new cars and better then my g6 lights.
I cleaned mine yesterday using Arm and Hammer baking soda toothpaste. It worked really well.

I used toothpaste and baking soda. I was so surprised at how well it works. My car is 20 years old. The one headlamp was so cloudy I thought it would have to be replaced. I scrubbed it for a few minutes and rinsed it off and it looks brand new.
I'm going to try this tomorrow. Your comment convinced me, and I'm going to do the same as you with the toothpaste.
Was it the driver's side headlight? That side seems to take more of a beating. One of mine is worse than the other too: on the driver's side.

@@aliceudisappointedme I tried both of those methods separately. Tried the toothpaste first and then the baking soda. Toothpaste worked better; the baking soda wouldn't really stick to the headlight covers but just dropped off in clumps before I could rub it around much: maybe the paste I made with water was too thick but thinning it didn't help much either. In the end I bought a little kit by Turtle Wax and then my lights passed inspection after still failing after my first attempt. (Actually they passed after the toothpaste effort, but there was still a translucent streak across the middle of one that made the beam aimed too low.)

I've tried many methods but always go back to what works sanding. You start with the least abrasive possible then work your way up to 3000. It's plastic so it doesn't take long then polish it up.
Great video! Nothing better than common sense to use cheap, yet very effective household products, rather then wasting money on unnecessary and overpriced cleaners, etc. I've found vinegar and baking soda are two of the very best basics for many uses, as well. Also, vinegar is great for cleaning windows, as is rubbing alcohol, because they dry quickly and streak free. I used some rubbing alcohol on my bathroom mirror and it cleaned better than than anything I've ever used, including Windex, which smells awful and takes a lot to dry. The alcohol practically disappeared as I was wiping the mirror clean. I must say though, for lint free wiping, microfiber cloths are the best. I'd be careful with some of these products getting on the car paint, as they may damage the finish if overused or in high concentrations. But baking soda is a great bug remover. Other basic products for general cleaning are lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, cooking oil, salt, and several others which don't come to mind right now. Just don't use all of it for everything. If you're not sure, do an internet search.

I have found that taking a furniture polish WITH wax in it, and rubbing it into the lens's ( after cleaning them like that) with my fingertips untill there is nothing but clear dropletts left, then buffing it off with a soft cloth, creates the brightest clarity I've ever seen.
Tried several methods on 4 cars and liked the soda/vinegar the overall best. certainly is cheap enough. One vehicle was really heavily clouded and I finished it with 500,600, and 1000 wet sandpaper followed with fine steel wool.and wax. I don't mind doing this every few months. I didn't want to mobilize a buffer, rubbing with the wet sandpaper by hand was good enough to suit me.
Since you did your Tundra 's headlights, they have been 3 yrs now, how are the headlights, are they still look as good as you just finished polishes with household remedies ?
hmm I made a paste with lemon juice and baking soda to clean my tub it worked amazing. Wonder how well it would do for my headlights. Vinegar alone is as strong Windex maybe even stronger.
Any item with an opposite ph will do I personally use vinigar with lemon on all restoration projects .
Tried this and it WORKED! Repeat a couple of times if necessary. This was on plastic headlights and not glass-FYI.

I’ve done wet sanding then clear coat spray can. Worked great for a year or so. Probably should have done a couple of coats of clear instead of one and then waxed them. Good vid

Good to know this also works...I was told to try OFF mosquito repellent, it works really well-spray it on clean then do the circle motion just like your demonstration. Repeat 2 or 3 times repents how dirty it is.
