Went back and listened to the Rivals chatter and was delighted how animated it got you ^_^. Amusing note, you used to *not* know who was hunting you but it was soooo clunky.
Nosferatu are the sewer people, Gangrel are the "spartans". (totally not offended as a Gangrel main)
The OP side of things, only a *few* cards were locked behind tournaments, the biggest of which was Prince of the City (which my shop hosted) that had the winner get a card made in their vision. The issue was Renegade does so many products that getting consistent with it is just... sigh. Got to the point that many local scenes were making better prize support than the company (I myself had to design custom playmats to spice up prize pools). Now OP from them is more or less dead, but the scene itself refuses to die.
I could ramble all day but am amused you kept comparing it to VTES which runs along similar to Netrunner, Doomtown, L5R, etc where fan scenes have taken over and kept it alive. They recently had a "5th edition" set made and I think had a tournament over in Gulfport not to long ago.

I had no idea that the prey targeting used to be secret. That's pretty wild.
Ah yes, I misspoke! That expansion was Nosferatu vs. Gangrel, and Mattie was playing the animal loving Gangrel. The Nosferatu's ability to hunt Mortals from their Haven seemed particularly uninteresting in a 1v1 game, but I dug their vibe.
I've heard really mixed stuff about Rivals OP and the global scene, which is for sure disheartening. I'm not hoping to have more than an interesting board game for four players, with some intrigue, political elements, and a shifting city landscape, and it looks to be delivering.
I picked up the starter set of 5th Edition VTES years ago, and haven't got it to a table just yet! That's the next goal.

The game plays so much better at 4 than 1v1. They *do* have rules for 2v2 but they're kinda... not good? Overall it is one of those games that I don't see me shelving any time soon. VTES is a whole... whole beast I've yet to tackle but am excited to try.
