Could you do Madison Scott? She disappeared one night at her friend's birthday party. The party was a group of people who were supposed to camp in the woods but everyone got so drunk and left and she was the only one who camped, apparently not realising everyone else hadn't stayed to camp like they were supposed to. Her friend literally left her alone in the woods in a tent. I'm not sure of the whole story but it seems soo suss. Love your vids btw you do such a good job on them and you have v similar opinions to me on the cases! Xx

Idk what “Robert” described... He said he had repressed memories, maybe he really did see something, and just associated it with Dana’s case bc it was reported on so thoroughly. Also he says his little brother was there, so I’d be interested to know if he remembers anything.
I was thinking something similar, maybe even that he did witness Dana's assault and murder, but due to years of drinking and repressed memories and childhood trauma, the details perhaps are muddled up. Trauma can do really strange things to the brain, and in an attempt to make sense of the situation or cope the mind may change or even repress key details (perhaps even the identity of the perpetrator).
Im between he saw some murder that just wasnt Dana's and was the dna not the guy he accused because the dna collected was the boys from when he supposedly posed her? I feel like if that dna was tested against his and it is Then his story could be proven true. Idk what type of dna it is. Maybe the dude hurt the boy and he left some blood on her from his own injuries while supposedly posing her? If not id bet his description of the clothes compared to missing hitch hikers nearby would solve whatever he did see. Also curioushow close that dump site is to that tree farm? Some people seem to have inserted themselves right away. So many options so few answers.
What if "Robert" or his brother was sexually assaulted/molested by that man they were in the car with, I mean he was a convicted paedophile. Maybe that's why Robert turned to alcoholism to suppress that trauma then later he shifted or projected that trauma onto something else like mistaking it for having witnessed Dana's death. People who suffer from alcoholism can have a lot of impaired memory (continuous and excessive use of alcohol can cause brain atrophy).
I suspect 'Robert' really was the victim of his neighbor and ether was trying to get another conviction on him so he never gets out of prison, or else has false memories due to trauma and hearing this story in the news. It's shockingly easy to remember things that never really happened to you just because you heard a story that you related to in some way, and the earlier in childhood a memory is, the foggier and easier to corrupt. His brother was probably too young at the time to have reliable memories at all. There's a big difference between asking a child what they saw soon after an event and asking an adult what they remember from so far back. The older any memory is, the less reliable it is, and the younger you were, even less reliable still.

In some places, people just buried things back in the day. Especially if it would cost money to have it towed away. "You want me to pay $20 to tow this car to the junk yard? Screw that, I'll just dig a hole." I wouldn't be surprised to find out someone buried a car in the yard of the house I live in back in the 70s or 80s. It's weird, but that's just how it was.
I live in NL and it’s not uncommon for cars or parts of cars to be buried when they break down. It’s usually they just sit there and start to sink into the ground

Every time I watch something that involves someone who was tragically killed before the 2000’s, the people who find the body’s always say “well at first I thought it was a manakin”. Were manikins very human like back then, or???
I remember in the early 90s we’d explore woods near my grandmas in the rural mountains in the US and there were always mannequin parts and creepy dolls in the woods lol so maybe it was just common then

yeah and at the time he was a child when it happened... It must've been pretty traumatizing to witness that so that would effect his memories etc also.
in psychology we had to study the effects of trauma on memory and the effect of misleading interrogation questions on memory - both of these would've affected Robert's memories of the event soooo....
But the fact that his story was so full of details make it suspicious that a lot of these details are wrong. Good liars usually make up very detailed stories because they think it will make the lie appear more convincing.
Sana Dar yeah. i forgot the name of it. but there is an effect that happens during testimony. your brain makes up false details. there was an experiment done where people gave their testimony shortly after and it was not 100% accurate. even i’m starting to fill in the blanks probably because i can’t remember exactly what i read in my psychology book. especially during trauma, you cannot trust your brain to recount the event in full accuracy.

Why is no one talking about the fact that maybe the 2 man that said they saw Dana getting in a car did it and they just thought it would be smart brining the cops on a wrong lead immediately!! Cause that would be my theory

@@vixceous There were other witnesses that both corroborated that they saw her get into a car, and that the 2 men were working at the time. I've seen a few videos on this case and there are a few things that weren't mentioned that make it pretty unlikely that they would've been able to.
In the 80s hitchhiking was so normal. As a kid, I remember seeing people on the road so often. Until 1986 when the movie The Hitcher came out, not many people seemed to think twice about it. That movie scared the crap out of people. You just never heard about people going missing and murdered back then. It was not nearly like now. Also, things weren't televised as widely or even necessarily covered by the news nationwide. Definitely different times.

And for the false information he may have remembered the incident vaguely and decided to look it up and he then convinced himself that these things that people were writing about were what he saw? To be fair it had been about 30 years and he was a former alcoholic, idk just an idea

I agree. They said she had blunt force trauma but no idea of the weapon. "Robert" told them what she was hit with. I just think the fact that he was an alcoholic and is talking about something 30 years prior some things may get mixed up etc. And why was the car buried????? And why not try cadaver dogs on the car etc.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Not only was he going through personal trauma prior to Dana’s death, but as well as seeing this at such a young age and trying to erase it with alcohol, things are going to get mixed up. As far as “Robert” saying there were injuries sustained that weren’t found in the investigation, it was the 80s. With many cases involved in that time period there are certain things that may not be picked up due to insufficient technology. It’s been proven with other investigations in which bodies were exhumed later, and other injuries were found. As far as clothing and items of Dana “not existing”, maybe they did and her killer took them and him them as trophies, or to throw off police. I personally believe “Robert” is telling the truth. The car in question had very high back doors, so the comment about no one seeing him or his little brother due to the lack of booster seats is completely plausible, as “Robert’s” head may not have reached the top where the window meets the door.
They didn’t follow up on his lead because he was wrong the first time he reported which was before he was an alcoholic. Might be wrong but I think that’s why.

In psychology there is something called „false memories“ which means that you can actually make people believe to remember something they didn’t even see or experience. Given that fact it is definitely not unlikely that „Robert‘s“ memories had been influenced by articles he had read etc.! So in my opinion there is a chance he actually was involved...

Madison Martin happen here so much it’s scary. Look at the numbers of missing people in NL over the last 50 years. Not murdered or suspected dead, just missing and never found.
I’ve been saying for ages the numbers are there to support a serial killer on the loose, and I would bet it ends up being a cop.

I think “Robert” genuinely believed he was involved in the crime, due to his alcoholism it’s thought that he had read these articles over the years and it had stuck in his head and when he stopped drinking all these other traumas cane back and with confusion he believed he was also there at the crime of Dana. It’s really common that people with addiction and trauma have experiences like this. I don’t think he purposely was telling A lie he genuinely believed he was there
Also he was only 6 years old, and having been an alcoholic for years I wouldn’t be surprised if some details were wrong. I actually believe him
Her mother's birthday is her death anniversary, can't imagine how the mother feels.
This is a very tragic story for a number of reasons. All evidence shows that they had the killer (Somerton) and literally let him walk away. His behavior seems perfectly logical to me; at first he believed the police had more than enough evidence to lock him up so he confessed to committing the murder but once he realized he might actually walk away and clear his name, he changed his tactics. I would not be surprised if the police was afraid to take the blame for making such a mistake because this would most likely result in a perfectly-understandable outrage within the community.
You also chose not to mention that Dana was actually a troubled teen who was going through the climax of a very rebellious phase at the time of her kidnapping. During the months leading to the tragic events she was often caught skipping classes, encouraging others to do so, forging notes for school and keeping lots of secrets from her parents. I don't believe this is anyhow connected to the kidnapping or murder but it might explain why she decided to hitchhike instead of waiting for the bus. This also increases the possibility of the murderer being someone she never knew prior to that day.
I'm pretty sure Somerton would have been tested for a DNA match.

say he was checked and cleared.
I don't think the fact that she was skipping classes and encouraging others to do so and all of that was relevant to the case. Maybe Bella decided not to talk about that because she wanted to keep the victim's memory in a good way. If she went missing, if no one had ever found her body, then i think it would be relevant to say that. Just a tought.

If it were my daughter and those things weren't relevant to the case, I'd be upset if that's how people chose to portray her (especially because the victim's past can have positive or negative impacts on how much people care and offer help). Humans are very complex, so of course there are also tons of positives to focus on instead, which I'm glad Bella did, and I'm sure her family would be too.

Honestly, thinking about how many confessions truly have been coerced, sometimes due to the controversial Reid technique, or when people have randomly confessed to crimes (even when the person turns out to actually be alive!) I take confessions much less seriously than other evidence.
But I thought that Somerton was released because there really wasn't enough physical evidence connecting him to the crime. He said in an interview he practically just told them where the weapon was & where the car was but he ultimately mislead the officers and thus was subsequently charged with public mischief. I do sure hope that it wasn't him though and that the police let him walk off when it possibly could've been him but a few years ago the RNC confirmed they had a DNA match linking an 'unknown male suspect' to the murder. But that's where the problem lays; they still don't have a definitive identify for this individual. So the years keep passing by and we don't know for sure if there ever will be somebody to answer for this tragic murder, but I often still hold out hope that there will be someday....maybe.

I’m from Newfoundland and this has been the BIGGEST case that left such a small province shook to its core. Dana’s disappearance is still a common conversation amongst people within the province all these years later... I don’t really think that we’ve gotten over it and we certainly haven’t forgotten. Newfoundland is a place filled with such generosity, kindness, and people who are so closely knitted, so undoubtedly it’s still beyond people’s comprehension that anyone could do the unthinkable to an innocent girl. So so happy you chose this case!!! Keep these vids coming ❤️

Chelsey legally, they cannot do anything until a person has been missing for 24 hours. After all, their job is to follow and enforce the law. They don’t make the laws, they just follow them. The way you word things makes it seem like you believe the cops are soooo horrible for not giving a shit about a missing person or something. Please🙄
That's a myth, you do not have to wait 24 hours to report a person as missing. Also, the only time I've ever heard that said was in regards to a legal adult. This girl was 14.
whitley purnell i don’t even know where you got that information? Nobody said you had to wait 24 hours to report, you can report after 30 mins if you want. The POLICE cannot do anything within 24 hours, as most missing person cases are about a runaway person or someone who is just without their phone and trying to come home. So, actually, you are wrong. The police won’t do anything before a full 24 hours.

I just binge watched all of your unsolved mysteries. I had heard about of a lot of these cases,but never in as much detail. You obviously put a lot of time and effort into your research. Your empathy for the victims and their families always comes across as sincere. Hopefully, these cases will all be resolved one day, one can only hope.
A Mystery Monday on the Highway of Tears would be SO amazing!! No on really knows, but there could be 40+ women (mainly of Aboriginal decent) that have gone missing on this certain 720 km stretch of highway in Northern British Columbia, Canada. Some people think it's a truck driver who has driven that stretch of highway his whole career...No one really knows, but these women's families are still looking for answers.. A feature on one or two of the girls would be so interesting!
Would love to see you cover the Faith Hedgepeth case, it really just haunted me because it seemed as though everyone knew who did it but there was no evidence to pin it..also she’s Native American and the media gave the case no coverage as they tend to do with the Native American population

Back in the 80's my brother and sister were 8 or 9 and my mother got pulled over in the HOV lane which this one at that time of day required 3 people in the car. The cop could not see 2 school aged children in the car. It is completely 100% possible that people couldn't see 2 smaller children in the car. Not saying the guys story is true, but it is possible and there were no booster seats around.
There's a 10 year old boy in Montreal that has been missing for just over two months. Police first said he probably fell into the river back when it was still iced over. But now that everything has melted there are no signs of him washed up anywhere. The family has been saying since day 1 that he has been kidnapped. They relaunched a new awareness campaign this week. Ariel Kouakou.

you should look into the case of Ryan Shutka. He lives in my town near Kamlooops, BC. He’s been missing about 2 months now and he left a party late one night and only had to walk 5 mins home and has been missing ever since. Police dogs and search parties has looked in the whole area but no signs. His parents are offering $15,000 for any leads.

Why I have this strange feeling that maybe Robert guy has something to do with the actual murdering? They never got a DNA test of him (or at least it was never mentioned) and he said he was drunk around the time... maybe he was the one who did it. There have been quite a few young kids throughout history that have been capable of dark things like that. Another theory involving him is maybe someone else was involved in killing Dana? Possibly someone who was already at Maddox Cove waiting for them to arrive. What if Thomas was just the face he remembers because he was driving, but someone else carried out the deed? Robert said he has lots of repressed memories so maybe there’s something he doesn’t remember.

what if the 2 Christmas tree guys murdered her and they just made the car thing up?
Ellen another witness came forward after Dana’s body was found stating that they too spotted the car and that it was near the wooden area her body was found at. So the car was real.
What if the brothers are the murders. Because when Dana was hitch hiking she was on a busy ish road so it’s kinda impossible that not a single person saw her getting into that car
