I remember my first mariners game he hit a lead off homer and he hit a triple in bottom of the 7th was his triple he went from home to third base in 10 seconds I kid you not. My opinion he is my all time greats my favorite ball player him swinging the bat looked effortless. Master with his craft. So proud of this man for what he did in the community as well. Ichiro is/was a man of discipline, perfectly fitting the image of a samurai with his bats being his katana swords. But, he was also a ninja, (as a right fielder) catching and throwing in an incredible way, and (as an on-base runner) stealing bases like a lightning bolt. Ichiro was an incredible 3-in-1 package highly unlikely to be seen again.

Ichiro Suzuki was my favorite baseball player growing up! I was a left handed hitter as well. Going to Mariners games back when he was a rookie was amazing I still have the Ichiro book that was given to kids his rookie year at Safeco. This is the most obvious pick for the hall of fame ever. The way he would switch his stance then hit homeruns. Throw out players who were known for base stealing at 3rd and even 1st was incredible to watch. His fundamentals and eye cordination were so far above a lot of players and his lead off hitting inspired the fans and the Mariners line-ups everytime he made contact. He was a contact hitter during the "steroids" era, but instead of conforming he just stuck to the fundementals. A truly inspiring baseball player and a legend of the sport. Congratulations Ichiro Suzuki Arigato thank you for an amazing childhood of cheering for the M's! Shoutout bret borne EDGARRR John (3rd base) and Shiggy too!

You can make the argument that home run records in Japan don’t equate to home run records in MLB because of the smaller park sizes in Japan, but hits are a different story. It’s still the same 60’6” from the pitcher’s rubber to home plate and the same 90 feet between the bases. For a contact/slap hitter like Ichiro the only real difference is that the pitchers throw harder over here but they have nastier stuff in Japan.
Anyone wanting to call him “professional baseball’s hit king” has a good argument to make.

I love Ichiro but it’s pretty insane to be in the US for nearly 25 years and not be able to do an interview in English.

Like you could speak Japanese fluently. I was bilingual for most of my life, now I can barely remember my first language.

Costas makes it clear he could do the interview in English but for this HoF interview Ichiro wanted to be as exacting and clear as possible without any awkward language or confusions due to English not being his first language and possibly distracting from what he wanted to say. He chose not to.

Great player. What I don’t understand with Ichiro and other Japanese players is why they have never fluent English to speak it comfortably. He played almost 20 years in the US, and virtually every student in Japan takes several years of English in school. Players from Europe and elsewhere come to North America to play in the NHL in NBA and learn to speak English. Is there a reason why Japanese speakers have such a difficult time learning English? Actually a serious question as am curious.

He speaks good English. He is VERY concerned about not embarrassing himself, his country, or his family, by making verbal gaffes that could happen if he did interviews in english.
