People are missing one important part here.. "IT ALWAYS SETS OFF IN AWD". You're not going to spin the tyres up like a Haldex waiting for the clutch to engage power to the rear. If you then brake hard and turn in hard the car senses you're driving hard and keep the system engaged. You can't fool it, it's always half a second in front of you and you need to really calm down (like driving straight for a while at partial throttle) before it disconnects the drive to save power. The static bias is 50/50 like early Quattro due to it being a clutch pack driven system but it can apportion up to 85% to either axle depending on how you're driving. It's not Haldex not even close.. all Haldex can do is engage the rear wheels when the front slips on a front wheel drive car, this isn't the same. This is an AWD system that can disengage when it sees calm steady state driving. Plus it has the "off-road" mode which basically forces the system to lock up and stay locked, where you have static 50/50 with 85/15 or 15/85 max torque bias in either direction. Just put it in off road mode if you're doing any kind of performance driving then it's basically the same as BMW xDrive or Mercedes 4matic. I also guarantee you when the after market breaks into the code you will be able to fix it at 85% rear bias (like drift mode in BMW M5). Don't be so foolish to think this is a bad system, it isn't. But it also isn't Torsen Quattro, it's very different.
The system is still faster than any other disconnect and it's vehicle dynamics (input of road conditions, steering angle, pedal, braking) feedback alone makes it better than the previous Quattro System. People don't understand or like change and think their opinion matters to innovation - this latest iteration of AWD Quattro! These comments remind me of when Audi 1st came on the scene for 4WD...people said it was too heavy!, Too Expensive!, Inefficient, Gimmicky, not RWD to kick out or do spectacular drifts or burn outs. Those soon became believers!!! Have Faith! New Quattro Ultra's are new yes but they are getting better year over year so Rock On Audi!!! Ultra is just the beginning of the next chapter of AWD Dominance!
Not convinced. Torsen quattro differentials are proactive. This "ultra" system is merely a redesigned haldex. Not buying the fuel efficiency claims. This seems more like a cost cutting measure to have the same system across more VW AG fwd biased platforms. RIP Quattro.
As an Audi fanboy, and as the owner of 2 Audi A4's i would say this is stupid, ive never complained about efficiency ever, also i this its stupid that it defaults to front wheel drive, i this this technology would be astonishing if its rear wheel drive as default and the front wheels kick in when needed, makes the vehicle a bit more fun to drive.
BMW fanboy, here. Haven't Audi quattro systems always been front-wheel biased to 50/50? BMWs xDrive is worth checking out if you want some RWD feel and a decent AWD system.. much better than xDrive on E46s and older Bimmers.
Why couldn't they make the default RWD? You've already made the car inneficient by having a longitudinal layout, so why did they ruin it all by throwing back into fwd? Can the cars still kick their tails out under alot of power? if it can then i guess this is okay- i still haven't found the answer.
macaron3141592653 RWD is for American muscle cars and trucks that are lethal when **any** handling is required. We are on our 4th Audi... I find this terribly disappointing... Just like when manufacturers said electric steering would feel just as good as hydraulic steering. It doesn't. Drive by wire throttle doesn't feel as good either. I'm all for efficiency - but this is neutering Quattro if you ask me. I have no problem paying a little more for Audi to use more aluminum and magnesium to lighten the car. I love start/stop. I like the idea of cylinder deactivation and more efficient transmissions... But I do NOT like the idea of a part time AWD system that is FWD biased. Audi's were getting exciting now that some of the weight is shifted off the nose and the front wheels handle less of the torque day to day. This seems like it's going backwards for minimal fuel gains.
agreee totally.... they correctly spent all that time getting weight off the front end and moving more torque to the rear. it made the cars more responsive and fun... i expected that to continue... this is backwards. it should be the other way around
Most Americans on here don't quite understand that fuel is very expensive here in Europe. Why on earth do I need quattro when I'm cruising? And this comes with an option for parmanent AWD when needed. I genuinely don't see what the fuss is about
I you have ever driven a permanent AWD system before, and a connectable all wheel drive system, you will immediately notice the difference. This is not permanent all wheel drive and would never be. Quattro was always about having symmetric retention in all four wheels. Yet I guess that Audi, by choosing the new mild hybrid system which disconnectes the engine when coasting, already knew it was going to sacrifice retention and kill quattro effectively.
i'm seriously thinking about to buy the subaru forester xt.now i have the a4 quattro but next year i have to purchase a new one for my business.the suby still offers permanent awd with great performance and i save 10k euros.at the moment only the a6,a7 and a8 uses torsen and also the audi a4 but diesel. i suspect that in the future could be that all the audis will be with ultra technology.
yes i understand your opinion but could you please explain me why Audi has always declared that the best awd system have to be mechanical and permanent, and audi has based its advertisement on the fact that their system was all mechanical and NOT electronic!!and now they say that this new system that is 100% elettronic is so god as the old torsen that was 100% mechanical.sorry but as customer of audi i have the sensation that they are making fun of the customers.
People, listen: this new version of Quattro is just a modernized Haldex, with AWD only on demand. Since the car is mostly FWD, you can expect that other things on the car will be designed like for a FWD car, like suspension and steering, so the overall performance will be lower. The previous A4 version, the B8, had the Torsen permanent AWD, which distributed the power more to the rear wheels and improved handling. How do you explain that the top Audi sedans are maintaining the Torsen Quattro?... Coming back to the B9, I think Audi's decision was to rely heavily on technology and features for this version, so when you do this you must cut back on other things because there is a budget you need to fit into, and it seems this time they cut back on quattro.
It is not modernized haldex. Idea is similar - shifting power from front to back, but the rest is different. It comes from different manufacturer, clutch-pack is completely different, control software is different, performance is different.
I just bought a new Q5, but kept my B8 A4 sports package. The Torsen system, 6 speed, factory built sports package, not drive select. She's a collector's item now. I heard the next version of the A4 is going electric.
@@barrymcockner5850 It was an exaggerated point to say that 6 speed, gas engines, and the old Quattro system are someday going to be looked on like the 64 Chevy Impala or Ford Falcon you see on Mecum auctions and shows like that.
