If Matilda is not considered a "queen" because she didn't have a coronation, why is Edward VIII considered a king when he abdicted prior to his coronation? Maybe I missed something here.
Because he was George V's son- he automatically became King because of the death of his father. As per rules of succession... Matilda and Jane being medieval/tudor Queens... Faced different laws.
Honestly, it's because history is written by the victors, who tell the story that helps themselves the most. Matilda only held power briefly, and was still alive when her son came to the throne in 1154, so he could not acknowledge her rule without putting the crown back on her head. Jane Grey was proclaimed by the Council and took possession of the Tower, making her the legitimate queen, but her rival Mary I had to disavow Jane's rule to secure her own place. Mary's successor Elizabeth I followed suit because Jane's sisters were still alive and many thought they were the "rightful" heirs instead of Elizabeth. In Edward VIII's case, George VI's right to rule rested on the same premise as his brother's--both sons of George V--so the Edward's right could not be ignored (besides, he abdicated rather than being disposed). Henry VII labeled Richard III usurper yet did acknowledge his rule, likely because he was trying to reconcile the rival factions and kept many of Richard's advisers, even restoring Richard's heir to the Council. BUT Henry also backdated his rule to the day *before* his victory at Bosworth Field so he could attaint those who fought against him for treason. See? History is written by the victors. Btw, the Tudor Society acknowledges Queen Jane's rule. Cheers.
Both Matilda and Jane's respective rights to the throne were very widely and hotly disputed the moment they were proclaimed. This was not the case with other monarchs such as Edward VIII, despite the fact he too had no coronation. It was probably the most important reason the ladies aren't usually included in lists of monarchs.
In the olden days the rules were the most powerful person got the throne and a coronation cemented their claim however by about 1700 the rules were clear and the coronation is now more like a grand festival and you are considered sovereign as soon as you ascend.

My only wish to our current monarchy is for Charles to consider ruling as King Arthur, considering that's one of his middle names. Its about time we got a King Arthur!

Some royals wear sashes become the monarch appointed them a member of an order. The direction of the sash and the colour all depends on the order. For example in the UK, there are multiple orders, the two main ones worn by royals are the Order of the Garter and the royal victorian order (for service to the crown), the queen has appointed the most senior royals (e.g. her children, her cousins and prince william) as knights of the order of the garter meaning they wear the garter sash (you will find a photo of it on google) all knights/lady companions of the order of the garter wear the sash on their left shoulder, the other order, the royal victorian order has different ranks, the highest one is a knight/dame grand cross of the royal victorian order which is the only rank that wears a sash, that sash is blue and red (again you will find a photo of it on google) however it is worn from the right shoulder, recipients would be less senior royals like camilla, duchess of cornwall, catherine, duchess of cambridge and sophie, countess of wessex. There are lots more orders (there is a wikipedia page about them all - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orders,_decorations,_and_medals_of_the_United_Kingdom) and the colour and direction of the sash show you which order that person is apart of.

Is the title "Queen Mother" really a title? Or is it just a special nickname of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, since the next heir is, and will take "Elizabeth" as her regnal name, and will have the title Queen also? Just to avoid confusion?? Edit: Forgot to add that the reason why I asked this is because the Dowager Queen, Mary, (Mary of Teck) Did not use a title like the Queen Mother's. Sooooooo maybe it really is just for the Queen Mother. Another edit: Just realized that if you happen to live during King George VI's era until today, then that means you get to witness decades of having Elizabeth as your queen lol... that's cool.
It is a courtesy title. There a different kinds of queens, like consort, dowager, regent or regnant. Queen Elizabeth was specifically known as Queen Mother to avoid confusion with Queen Elizabeth ll. Maybe you would’ve preferred if she answered your question but since I kinda know this I did 😅💖
Queen Mary of Teck outlived her husband George V and her son George VI. She would have been the Queen Mother until George VI died. Mary's life continued into the first year or so of Elizabeth II's reign.
@@purrdiggle1470 Oh yes. But out of all the dowager queens I know, Elizabeth was the only one who used the title Queen Mother. Anyway, thankyou for your reply. I have another question, I think the title Queen Mary of Teck is incorrect? She's not the Queen of Teck tho, just a princess of Teck; And perhaps the Queen of the UK?
@@myani.I think the title "Queen Mary of Teck," meant that she is not technically "the queen" of Teck-which is impossible because Teck is just a duchy within the Kingdom of Württemberg-it refers to where she's from instead.
Were there any Queens or Princesses with bad cramps or menstrual problems? Seems everyone always looks so beautiful and never swollen. Do they schedule their appointments around their monthly? Is that even possible? Queen Letitia always looks perfect too. Maybe they get so skinny they stop having them. I ask you this because you don’t seem to shy away from our questions. Thank you.
Just a note: Magna Carta means “the great charter”, so it is incorrect to call it “the Magna Carta”, as you are actually saying “the the great charter”.
I have also wondered why Elizabeth and Philip chose "Charles" for their heir's name considering the history. I've also wondered the same thing about William and Catherine's choice of "Louis". I know he's in line after both George (a very English name) and Charlotte (another familiar British royal name) but if it happens that Louis does become King it would be somewhat strange to had a British King Louis considering its strong link to the French monarchy and England and France's long rivalry. Also, would he be considered the first King Louis or the second. I've seen conflicting reports about the short rule of King Louis. Some records include him and some don't.
It’s basically guaranteed that Louis won’t become king, and although Louis isn’t a very British royal name, it is a very common name for regular people in the U.K. which is why I think they chose it. To seem more down to earth
Charles the 3rd fits him perfectly then?? Charles and his mistress will never be my monarchs. If William had taken the throne I may have voted to keep them but as soon as Australia has it's next referendum I will be voting against the Royal Family for the first time. The last one was 1999 and only passed with a 55/45% majority. At that time the Queen Mother and Elizabeth was still alive and my whole family voted to keep them out of respect for the hard work and commitment by these 2 women. I will never vote to keep Charles...and never even acknowledge the mistress he married. Bring on the referendum!! I think 2023 will be another to get rid of him once and for all.
I was wondering what some of the English thought of their new king sausage fingers. Also would you feel the same if let's say, harry took the throne? (If that's possible even since he exited?)
Here’s another idea, it might be too controversial and I would understand why you might not feel comfortable covering it. The idea I have is all the controversy covering the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their actions and activities. Also I would be interested in seeing a video on all of the Duchesses that were and are originally from the US and CANADA. Thanks again.
There is also a genetic disorder that causes bluish skin if there is to much inbreeding for to many generations. There are cases in both Kentucky and Alaska. When I heard of this disorder and thought of the royal inbreeding, I thought that was where "blue bloods" came from.
Isn't Queen Elizabeth II supposed to be Elizabeth I of Scotland too? It seems like they stopped separating the regnal number after the unification. William IV, Edward VIII.
The monarchs pick the highest regnal number available in either Scotland or England. So Elizabeth becomes II b/c that's the highest number in England (tho. not in Scotland). If a future king takes the name James, then he'd be 'James VIII' as that's the highest number in Scotland (but not in England). By the same token, a future king taking the name Malcolm or Alexander would be 'Malcolm V' or 'Alexander IV' as Malcolm IV & Alexander III were Medieval Scottish kings, even tho. there are no kings of either name in England's history.
Surprised you didn’t mention Elizabeth’s regnal number is different in Scotland than Great Britain. Her number is not listed in Scotland, as the first Elizabeth was not ruler there. Mary Queen of the Scott’s ruled during this time, so Elizabeth’s style there is “ER”, instead of the “E2R” (EIIR) everywhere else.
Awesome stuff! Pronunciation's a bit off, especially with "regnal", but otherwise very educational. Edit: Also Æthelred the Unready's nickname was a pun on his name (meaning "well advised") and unræd, meaning "poorly advised"

Another fun fact about “blue blood” I learned in high school, there was a medical condition that effected the oxygenation of the blood so that when people were upset or flushed, they would turn purple or “blue” instead of red and the medical condition was a result of genetic inbreeding.
Do you think maybe you could do a video on the rulers of the Empire of Brazil? It has always fascinated me that countries in the "new world" has had monarchies in the past
Tyrion purple is a VERY modern name. It comes from game of thrones references. Royal purple has been called several things, but anyone who ever wore true royal purple would have had no idea what "tyrion purple" was
That’s not true. It’s spelled “Tyrian” purple and was named for the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre. The city was the center of the purple dye trade for centuries.
Wonderful video as always Lindsay. But I do have a question for a future video. What if, the Australian dude, who thinks he is the love child of Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall, is actually telling the truth? Does he have a right to the throne? Or is he meerly a commener as the rest of us.
He's not legitimate and in any case William was born from princess Diana who legally married Charles way before Carmilla so he would be a step-brother to him and Harry rather than having a right to the throne.

Wow 🤩 thanks so much for answering and Sharing my question about the blue bloods it really means a lot to me thank you you have made my day ❤️! And to think 🤔 that painting our veins blue as a fashion trend 😩

Hello! 🤣
Ethelred the unready wasnt 'unready' in fact ' Unready' actually meant 'no counsel', or that he was unwise.
Some of the british monarchs who chose not to use their real names were Edward VII, whose real first name was Albert as was George VI real name and Queen Victoria's real name was Alexandrina.
Hello friend how are you doing?🌹
My only wish to our current monarchy is for Charles to consider ruling as King Arthur, considering that's one of his middle names. Its about time we got a King Arthur!
12:10 The name George in not German, but Greek γεωργός- it means 'farmer'. The name Albert is Germanic origins. I think that George VI choose this name to honour his father.
That was funny with Charles wanting to reach his grandfather popularity.
Fun fact: my favorite color is purple. And in my home you will always find something purple. My curtains in my room are plum purple. No they don't smell like shellfish lol.

Lady Jane Gray, the 9 day queen. I love the novel that was made and did a book report. it was an amazing novel.
I thought Queen Victoria pronounced “We are no amused,” after seeing a production of HMS Pinafore.
I would LOVE to see a video on the Welsh Monarchs before the Edwardian Conquest. It's not even taught here in Wales much, with schools focusing more on English history. I've heard that other European countries learned more about it than us - history being written by the victors and all that. Lots of blood, backstabbing, torture and assassinations to dig in to!
Here’s another question: Why do some royals wear sashes? Should they be worn from left to right or vice versa. What about color?

Hi, Queen of History, Her Majesty, Lindsey! Love your content! One of my favorite channels of the over 500+ I subscribe to. I have a suggestion for you that is not directly related to the history of the British monarchy, but it would cover some of the things that they might have enjoyed. The history of High Tea; the history of the taking of hot chocolate and maybe coffee. Thanks so much! Cheers!

OMG!! I learned so much from this video! You are really gifted. Thank you... I can't wait to watch more!
Maybe you would’ve preferred if she answered your question but since I kinda know this I did 😅💖
@@santiagoolivares336 Oh nice, thank you for your reply!
Enjoy your videos and listen to most of them on You Tube. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you.

So enjoying these videos - listening at work makes the day go so much more pleasantly :)

Spilled some lovely tea here Lindsey! Great vid and delivery ... your American pronunciation is flawless (BA in linguistics here). 💜
The entire point of monarchy is you don’t get to choose. And voting them out is highly unlikely at the moment with how popular William and Kate are.
Can you do more videos on Scottish royalty? Love your videos!!
Even the way you speak is simply royal! Thank you for this enriching video ;)
Royals don’t speak like little girls.
Also royals don't generally have an American accent
You're amazing, Lindsay. I appreciate the tea time.

Hey, Charles is a good name. I think Charles II was a good king. But then again there is Prince Charles... who is just meh to me.
It's up to the monarch, but she's going to have one name because the UK is one country
@@jeandehuit5385 Thank you! I've been wondering about this but too lazy to Google it.
Hello 🥰🥰🥰

Another fun fact about “blue blood” I learned in high school, there was a medical condition that effected the oxygenation of the blood so that when people were upset or flushed, they would turn purple or “blue” instead of red and the medical condition was a result of genetic inbreeding.
It doesn’t matter what Prince Charles calls himself if/when he becomes king, he’ll be unpopular nevertheless.
No name makes him likeble

It would be great! I'm Brazilian btw. I don't know for sure how many American countries has ever had monarchies also

Fantastic video!
But Charles took the name Charles III 😂

Wonderful video as always Lindsay. But I do have a question for a future video. What if, the Australian dude, who thinks he is the love child of Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall, is actually telling the truth? Does he have a right to the throne? Or is he meerly a commener as the rest of us.
You have to be legitimate to inherit the kingdom. "Love children" don't qualify. 😏😉
He’s an insane commoner.
He's not legitimate and in any case William was born from princess Diana who legally married Charles way before Carmilla so he would be a step-brother to him and Harry rather than having a right to the throne.
He is far too old to be the son of Charles and Camilla. They would have been toddlers or very young children when this pretender was born😂😂😂
You may wish to re-check your comment about Charlemagne. I believe he was crowned in 800AD, not 1800AD.
The Chola Dynasty of India was the longest ruling dynasty in the world which lasted for 1300-1500 years. They were first to introduce naval warfare. At their peak, ruled many parts of South Asia and South East Asia.

@@ninedaysqueen301 Hello, how are you?
Hi Jane :)
Can not wait on the coronation video.
I like your content it's informative well researched and the topics are unpopular imo. You're sceptical and polite
But the style of your intonation the sing-singing the text weirdly is annoying to listen to
It's the dynamic of highs and lows, it shifts too much in a single sentence
OMG, thank you!! I love her content and her videos are so well done-- she's clearly very educated in her subject matter, but the way she reads everything is brutal (for me) to listen to! I've thought I was losing it because no one ever says anything in the comments (that I've seen before now)! I was trying to watch this video earlier today and my son walked in and said, "Mom- stop listening to that-- that voice is SO bad!" Then a couple of minutes later, my husband and daughter politely asked me to turn it off because they couldn't handle listening to her anymore! I felt somewhat vindicated with regard to my feelings about how she reads things, but then I did a "find" search for "voice" and nothing came up. I was REALLY starting to feel like I heard something others (outside of my immediate family) couldn't or didn't hear, then I read this and you made my day!!! Bless you, you've made me feel like my ears aren't broken anymore! lol (Sorry for the long rant, but this issue has been bothering me for a very, vveeeeery long time! lol)
Lindsay said one time something about learning youtubing on her own, that's cool. But I'm guessing intonation can be hard if you don't get feedback or don't have an ear for it yourself
it’s refreshing to find another royal history buff who *doesnt* like monarchies.
