Ms Pac-Man on Atari 800XL was great, I had no need to buy it for my 7800. I had 80 Atari 2600 games (foolishly gave them away awhile back) and loved the reverse compatibility! My favorites on 7800 were Double Dragon and Food Fight. I played both for many, many hours!
Definitely for me one of the top 10 games 3D Asteroids. I loved the animation of the spinning asteroids in the sound effects kind of reminiscent of 50s science fiction movies to me.
Wow! I've got to admit that, Midnight Mutants looks pretty great for the Atari 7800! It looks like quite a bit of fun!! And Alien Brigade featured graphics that I had no idea the 7800 was capable of providing...
Sadly they are two of the most expensive 7800 games too. Midnight Mutants is around 120 dollars loose. Alien Brigade is around 70-80. But yeah the 7800 was a impressive system, had it released when it was supposed to and the market crash didn't happen, I think it would have faired better.
It took me so long to find this, purely because I thought the system was 8600 lol. Google and Wikipedia were of little help. I never played on this system, but I wanted to know what the better games were like. A few of these look fun to play today. Especially ninja golf. I really want to try that 😂
I mostly agree here. The only game I strongly feel deserves to be added is one that I think you may have called trash. And that is Tower Toppler. I love that game, but I know Classic Game Room also described it as a dumpster fire. I'm glad you included a lot of the more advanced games on the system. I've seen several best of lists that were mostly the old arcade ports. While they are mostly faithful ports, I cringe when I see people saying that the best that the 7800 had to offer was Centipede and Galaga.
While it is well made, Tower Toppler is not for me, although it does seem to have it's share of fans. Sadly, I think the late releases get overlooked a lot due to lack of exposure, which is a shame.
Do you member how far you got? I've made it to (but never beat) level six. But that was years ago. I'd be lucky to make it to level four at this point. I can agree with the haters on one aspect though. The sound makes me wish I were deaf.
My tastes are a bit obscure, I'll admit. But these are the games I can't live without on the 7800 . . . #1. Xenophobe #2. Midnight Mutants #3. Dark Chambers #4. Scrapyard Dog #5. Basketbrawl #6. Robotron 2084 #7. Tower Toppler #8. Dig Dug #9. Fatal Run #10. Commando Heck, I remember how much I used to play Hat Trick & Real Sports Baseball . . .
I only owned 11 Atari 7800 games back in the day. I have played a few more, in part thanks to playing them on the Evercade. SO my “Top 10” is far from comprehensive. The ones with a “*” were games I originally owned back in the late 80s/early 90s. 1. Ms PacMan* 2. Food Fight* 3. Mario Bros* 4. Rampage* 5. Desert Falcon. Didn’t own as a kid, but have since played and its the type of game I would have loved back in the day. 6. Donkey Kong Jr* would be higher if the sound was better. Gameplay is great. 7. One-On-One Basketball* 8. Ninja Golf 9. Alien Brigade 10. Impossible Mission* Despite being impossible, I still thought it was pretty fun back in the day. Spent hours trying to solve it. Ok, the only other 7800 games I have played include Asteroids, Centipede, Kareteka*, Crack’d*, Pole Position II*, MotoPyscho, Planet Smashers, Basketbrawl, and Tomcat F-16*. I can tell you just by watching--and plus my experience playing the games/ports on other systems, the 7800 versions of Robotron, Joust and Commando would have all likely cracked my top-10 had I played them.
Good work! I enjoy your reviews and your unique take on these games! Now I'm going to go play some 7800 Galaga (the best game on the system) and destroy a Ballblazer cart by removing the POKEY to use for something better :P
Virtually every 7800 Top Ten list includes many of the original releases programmed by GCE. It’s worth remembering that these gems were all completed by summer of 1984, two years before the nes became widely available in the U.S. As others have said, the 7800 could have been huge. But Jack Tramiel left the 7800s and games sitting in warehouses for two years, belatedly releasing them only after Nintendo captured the market. What a poor business decision to shelve the 7800 in ‘84 and, at the time, a huge disappointment for video gamers.
What did you think of Dark Chambers for 7800? I haven't had a chance to play all of them yet, but I do have Ms Pac Man, Xevious, Dig Dug and Dark Chambers so far. I love Dark Chambers because it is like an easier, but still very fun, version of Gauntlet but with its own neat little twists like how the enemies sometimes morph into different ones when hit rather than just dying right away. How well does Alien Brigade control with the 7800 joystick? I've thought about getting it, but have wondered if the shooter control for it is too finnicky. Good video!
Asteroids was such a fun game, no matter the system. I don't have the official 7800 version, but I've got Asteroids Deluxe released by Atari Age. I'm not sure if it's built on the official game's code but with different graphics, or if they completely started fresh.
OK my top 10 and random order. There are a few games I don't have yet though. Ballblazer, Food Fight, Mario Bros., Commando, Ikari Warriors, Joust, Impossible Mission, Ninja Golf, Alien Brigade, Xenophobe.
Thank you. Luckily the PAL version hasn't got the bug, but it is still very hard to complete. One of the more complex games for the system. I really loved your series of reviews for the system. Thanks.
If I was going to emulate the 7800, I assume that it would be better the emulate the original arcade games, which I have been doing on retropie. The only 7800 game I am emulating is Pole Position.
Not all of these games are arcade ports and some of the parts have special multiplayer modes that the arcade games did not have.Asteroids for example has team and competitive modes along with being it's own game.
Great system, the backwards compatibility gave an 8 year old me access to so many fun games from the 2600 as well

My top 5
1 Midnight mutants
2 Basketbrawl
3 Joust
4 Mario Bros
5 Xevious
Definitely for me one of the top 10 games 3D Asteroids. I loved the animation of the spinning asteroids in the sound effects kind of reminiscent of 50s science fiction movies to me.
Wow congratulations on covering the complete library.
Thank you! I was hoping to be done sooner, but I am just glad I was finally able to complete it.

That fact my personal favorite Midnight Mutants is on the list.
I am happy.
it's a worthy game
I got a 7800 at age 12. Was my father's 7800, not mine. So amazing! I learned to code it later on.
Holy , you reviewed all the 7800 games? Hats off to you sir
Thank You! It was a lot of work, but worth it.

Very good video!!! Thank you, this video is very useful for me.
1. Galaga (I even prefer it over the arcade)
2. Xevious
3. Joust
4. Xenophobe
5. Tower Toppler
6. Dig Dug
7. Rampage
8. Dark Chambers
9. Food Fight
10. Crossbow
I am still mission Dark Chambers and Galaga, I see that they come highly recommended. They aren't that common PAL.
Yes! Another Tower Toppler fan. I see that game get a lot of hate, but I think it's wonderful.
ressljs It gets a ton of crap because it's incredible tough, but I love it.
Do you member how far you got? I've made it to (but never beat) level six. But that was years ago. I'd be lucky to make it to level four at this point. I can agree with the haters on one aspect though. The sound makes me wish I were deaf.
Honestly, I can't remember how far I got. It's been far too long.
My tastes are a bit obscure, I'll admit. But these are the games I can't live without on the 7800 . . .
#1. Xenophobe

#9. Fatal Run
#10. Commando
Heck, I remember how much I used to play Hat Trick & Real Sports Baseball . . .
Commando shows you what the system could have been.....

Hooray for the 7800! Hooray for the No Swear Gamer!

Who knew the cactus from Mario could make such good music? I've never even touched a 7800, but I enjoy watching your reviews of the games anyway.
Thank you!

Good video!
Ninja Golf sounds like one of the fake games that Meatwad plays in Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
Astroids would definitely be on my top ten for 7800, along with Ms . Pacman.
Asteroids was such a fun game, no matter the system. I don't have the official 7800 version, but I've got Asteroids Deluxe released by Atari Age. I'm not sure if it's built on the official game's code but with different graphics, or if they completely started fresh.
I wanted to buy midnight mutants but I couldn't afford the 50 bucks at the time.
Very nice video and fun to watch. Have a nice day.
My favorite game is Ikari Warriors.
Something told me it was ;)
The console did have potential. Too bad it was mastered too late. It does look better than some NES games, and sounds fairly arcade close good too.
OK my top 10 and random order. There are a few games I don't have yet though. Ballblazer, Food Fight, Mario Bros., Commando, Ikari Warriors, Joust, Impossible Mission, Ninja Golf, Alien Brigade, Xenophobe.
That's a solid top ten. It's a shame the US version of Impossible Mission has a game breaking bug in it. Otherwise it's a great port.
Thank you. Luckily the PAL version hasn't got the bug, but it is still very hard to complete. One of the more complex games for the system. I really loved your series of reviews for the system. Thanks.
great video
Merci Monsieur !
If it wasn't for that bug which made impossible mission unwinnable would it have cracked your top ten list??
Now all you need is the PAL only Sentinel :)
I believe he did review that.
This thing is more powerful than the C64
Mrs Pac man for me

I have seen that Atari is now also active in other areas. Has anyone ever read or found out anything about it?
Word on the street is that Atari is now active in ALL AREAS but this is top secret and on a need to know basis only
If that's the best the systems got then I think I'll pass..
Totally.
Looks like several rehashed 1970's games...
No Asteroids 7800..?
You forgot Donkey Kong.
How could he forget what his favorite games are?
Wtf what. About galaga ?!!!!
