Well on the mission Whiskey Hotel, there's a major (can't remember his name) in that mission, and when you come out from the bunker at the start of the mission it looks like an explosion has happened, so maybe he survived the broken arrow or maybe it was a different major, just a thought lol

“Broken Arrow” = last stand code word for when your position is compromised and your squad is dangerously on the verge of being overrun/overpowered, requesting an immediate danger close air strike/air support on your position.
It’s basically you telling your overwatch that you need any and all available air support to strike your position as close as possible as an absolute last ditch effort to hold ground, and there is a high chance you and your squad will die from the impacts.

Love the little detail at 6:08, where he addresses himself as “Echo 4 Sierra”
Because in the event you need a callsign but don’t have one because you’re just a grunt, you just respond with your rank and your last name initial, so for example the guy identifying as “3-Bravo Echo-4 Sierra” is (E-4)SPC/CPL (Insert last name that begins with the letter S.) from Bravo Company, 3rd Platoon
The dude is just at most a squad leader who’s in charge of maybe like anywhere between 3-7 guys who now has to take charge of whoever’s left now that his leadership is dead. Just an insignificant background detail but tells so much.

For those of you who don't know what Broken Arrow means, it means to call direct fire on the current requesters position.

From what I have read from people in the comments, broken arrow is a term for the squad requesting the military/army/Air Force to fire anything that is available on their position. The squad knew they were going to be wiped out by the enemy so they are sacrificing themselves.

mrDIRTYSHOT 7 3-Bravo Actual. in this case, more than likely, is refering to the squad leader, platoon sgt, CO. Whenever someone says "Actual" after their callsign it means you are talking directly to the leader.

@@Killingzone99 I think it's more of a "rendered combat ineffective" rather than destroyed. When unit takes this amount of losses, organization is completely lost - COs don't have an idea of how effective their subordinate units are, what kind of losses each unit specifically took and because of that they cannot effectively command their troops. It would take them some time outside of combat to gather up and regroup their forces and consolidate damaged squads into full-equipped ones before BCT can return to fight again. But again, if crucial units are destroyed, like logistics battalion, signal company, recons and so on, BCT won't be combat effective until it gets refitted with fresh manpower and equipment.

Considering that a BCT has about 4,500 soldiers (depending on the type), that would make 4,050 KIA or WIA. 10:54 Central Command orders evac.
--At this point, I can assume the Washington monument comes under attack and the events of Of Their Own Accord (after Ramirez reaches the bunker entrance begins).
Reason I found all of this interesting is how quickly the tide turned in favor of the Russians.
Going by this (and the rest of the dialogue), their overall strategy for taking D.C was very coordinated. First a massive build up of air, armor and mechanized infantry holding north of the city, and as well as massed armor and mech infantry to the east. The forces from the east first moved detachments to secure the southern flank south of the capital; while the forces from the north simultaneously moved to capture the western flank along the Potomac; and cutting off reinforcements coming from Arlington. As soon as both southern and western flanks were taken, and with D.C was effectively surrounded, the Russians pushed inward from the north, east, southeast and west. -- By the time Ramirez is leaving the bunker (or perhaps when they reach the crow's nest), the territory around the Washington monument is the last remaining defensive position. -- I wonder what happened to the Stalker units and if they were still alive by Second Sun

If they remaster this game's campaign, I want one level added. We take the section at 5:20, and a few other sections of audio, and make it like the introductory mission in Battlefield 1, where we play as random soldiers in all of this and we hold out for as long as possible, seeing how things fall apart around the greater D.C. area. This would (in my opinion) be an absolutely awesome way of showing the rest of battle and showing it from the perspective of regular infantry units instead of special forces (like the 75th Rangers you play as). Also, it would add emphasis as to how brutal the Russians are being in this battle.

People say that CoD is unrealistic but to be honest this is most accurate radio chatter ive ever heard in a video game campaign.
You can actually follow the chatter up and down the chain of command and get a sense of what units are involved.
For example, Warhorse is providing CAS in the air and Stalker is the JTAC on the ground. Stalker is providing near perfect 9-lines.
Overlord is the top of the chain. I'm not sure what the rest of the units are exactly but they have their roles.
And for the most part, the radio chatter folllows proper radio prodocal. The only issues I've noticed is that:
3 needs to be pronounced as 'Tree'
5 needs to be pronounced as 'Fife'
And instead of 'Repeat' they need to say 'Say again'. Which happens sometimes but repeat never be said over the radio.
Beyond that, its perfectly fine. Very realistic radio chatter

    • @bower31
      @bower31 7 лет назад +20

You never say repeat on radio because repeat is only used for an artillery battery when you want them to fire another round exactly where the last one hit. So you don't wanna say repeat and have an artillery battery fire a round unannounced to the forward observer

This makes me really, really want a cold war gone hot style game, that actually tries to be as accurate as possible to the projections of the Eastern Bloc and NATO scenarios. Battles like the presumed Fulda Gap (It was assumed the entire inventory of A-10's and a vast majority of our attack helicopters would be expended within three weeks) Would have made Kursk, Stalingrad, Verdun, Berlin, look like childs play.
Combined numbers of armored vehicles would have gone over 25,000. If you count lighter armored personnel carriers like BTR's and M113's it would have been nearly a hundred thousand from everyone involved. Casualties were assumed to stretch over a million in the first month, due to the sheer amount of heavy weapons, and the possibility of tactical nuclear weapons being deployed to cut off enemy supply lines (Both sides).
A good way to start off the game would be playing as a soldier participating in the Able Archer exercise, in our timeline that exercise scared the Soviets terribly. We moved so many forces and it involved such a massive area in West Germany that the East thought we were actually preparing to invade. They were at their highest readiness for the duration, and a while after. It would be interesting from a story perspective if you were playing through a tutorial/initial sequence that basically said "Opfor armor pushing from XYZ grid, need assistance!" but it started sounding confused, then panicked as the call changed to "Soviet fast movers attacking my position! Soviet armor is assaulting my position!" till it was realized the Soviets had indeed launched an attack. It'd be cool if the Campaign actually switched between characters and sides, One NATO mission, one Soviet mission for every battle that would react to your previous success/failure.

So I know this is quite a time later, but I would recommend (not a game sadly, really do wish for that too, but a book) It's called Team Yankee it is the Cold War gone hot conventionally very quickly and it is quite indepth and well written. It is a majority about tank units and armored combat more than about the other aspects, but none the less I believe it gives off a VERY similar feel to this radio chatter and the horrors of it all

Not to be another comment addressed as pertaining to the unnamed Major defending the Capitol building, but there is one specific point I would like to make in that regard. Due to detailed analysis of the game materials, as well as geographical knowledge of D.C, after the Northern positions fall early on in this segment (around the 3:00-4:00 areas), it is that position that is not only the Easternmost defensive position, but also the Northenmost. This left the position vulnerable to enfilade fire, or placed at salient. Strategically, the Majors position should have been difficult at the minimum to defend. So his defense nevertheless only adds the heroism followed by the Broken Arrow order. He was literally in the worst position on the line at the time, and yet he committed himself to the defense. Awesome game from an awesome time in the franchise.

If you've ever heard the stories of dispatchers during 9/11--having to listen to hundreds of people in their last moments, having the voices linger in their memories for the rest of their lives--I imagine it would be something like that.
      I don't think Overlord reenlisted.

Fun (well. "Fun") fact: A lot of those dispatchers on 9/11 did commit suicide.

@@coolsceegaming6178 I wouldn't say that therapy is that useless; I'd argue therapy would be more like a tourniquet. Stops the bleeding, keeps you alive, but the arm that you lost isn't being reattached and you're going to feel the loss the rest of your life.

Imagine a game where you can play as those soldiers changing perpectives all the time, playing their deaths, trying your fullest until you run out of ammo or die, playing a-10 and getting shot down. Thats some homefront/spec ops the line impact right there.
