The truly voice of exp: double check new parts before the running. There are a few times I faced situations when new parts was broken or performing worse than old ones ))))
I've always used the '9' rule for 4 cylinder engines. Number one valve open, adjust 8 - number 2 open, adjust 7, number 3 open, adjust 6 and so on. It works for both firing orders, 1342 and 1243.
Another nice video! Very interesting moment on 04:55 when you put compressed air trough the oilfeedline on the head. The exhausting air creates a vacuum (Venturi) and sucks all the oil on the head towards the exit-hole. Nice demonstration how to create low pressure with compressed air! As you requested: no like without a comment! :-)
Thanks master this will help rebuilding my Toyota 4K engine at home after seeing this I don’t trust mechanics they just clean it basic and fit it yakhh noob mechanics you’re pro sir respect
Good video Steve, like any good tradesperson, check and double check, if it's worth doing, do it right, nothing worse than having a problem come back to bite yer 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Steve. Really good explanation video as always 👍🏻 New project 🤣 I feel it's an English car channel in Belgium lol 😂 Take care see ya next time cheers as always Stevie 😎🇬🇧
I was taught to have the rocker hit the tip of the valve stem to one side to encourage the valve to spin.. The tip of the valve is larger than the contact point of the rocker.
Hi great video, from working on MG"s a few years ,I've learned the the oil hole on the rocker shaft GO on the bottom. The reason for this is simple,MOST of the pressure of the valve being pushed OPEN comes from the bottom,{the valve spring and the push rod}. Having the OIL FEED HOLE on the bottom between the shaft and the rocker allows the oil pressure to lube the shaft. If you look a lot of rockers use a copper bearing in them. They may have groves machined in them to channel the oil correctly. The wear on this set up takes place on the bottom of the shaft ,i hope this helps ex-plane what's going on.!!!
Love watching the old rusty videos, well and truly hooked Steve and your command of English is fantastic. Personally I wouldn't demonstrate or clean anything on top of an open engine, even with WD40 as it's not worth the risk and WD40 doesn't belong inside an engine. Also I think when you're saying copper, you mean brass. Definitely not a criticism, just an observation.
Hy, good job. i set, the valve clearance, on ah little different way. in the engine always two pistons are on the same level. in this case 1 and 4 , 2 and 3? So yo rotate the crankshaft, if the exhaust valve close and the intake valve start to open. at example on the first cylinder. In this moment, you can adjust the clearance on cylinder four. I hope my English was good enough and you understand wat i mean ^^ Greetings from Austria
I was thinking the oil rocker holes on the rocker shaft should be towards the top (there is the grove on each rocker to let oil come down to the valve tops), and at each rocking the holes would open and shut. But then I thought there would be too much loss of pressure in the whole oiling system , since one or two holes would be open and let a big pressure drop. Therefore, the way you installed the shaft is right. Thanks for posting.
Wow, thanks!, No I never was. But had and still need to explain in my day job complex matters ( communication protocols and IP stuff). That is maybe the reason
Hi Young friend !! check the ware on the rockers to be sure for valve rocker adjustment...? Check pusher-rods see if not warped or slightly bent ..?I like to use copper spray on all my bolts or nuts -- pressure plate - flywheel - Inlet and exhaust gasket well sprayed !!
@@D3Sshooter Tell me...? Why do you wait for the piston to be at TDC and then adjust the valve gap? I don't understand.....am I right in saying you could also adjust the valve gap as it just starts the compression stroke? Am I right in saying its the same thing as the inlet & exhaust valve will both be closed and ready for valve gap adjustment. Please be gentle as I'm just learning about it and trying to make sense of it all.
Tussen uw tuimelaar en dikke spacer hebt u ook dunne spacers gestoken, en bij de lange spacers ook, dacht dat het daar niets moest? Vooe de rest, goed bezig 👍😊
Thanks for the comments, Yes I do... I just worked on it today and I expect to run it up in about two weeks, Still need a few parts that are hard to get. And then we will see if it runs or not
Just an observation but at 6:44 no 1 rocker cap has the split facing the camera, and 2 -5 facing away. at 19:27 all the rocker cap, splits are facing away from the camera is this OK ?, still a great video though.
nice work. Shouldn't there be an offset between the center of the valve stem and the center of the rocker tip. To make the valve rotate and avoid deposits
I think the holes in the rocker shaft should be on the top. Oil is supposed to come out of the top, flow down the rocker arm and feed the valves. Thats only my opinion, But you may be right ???????
Your work is impressive! Can you find specs and info on these engines online? Also; for the brackets that hold the shaft, does it make any difference which direction their open end faces? Thank you for your videos; they are amazing!
That is what one would think, but even then those holes on the tumbler and shaft don't line up, I have seen a lot of wear on the old shaft . That is why I have it pointing downwards. and as you notice when I blow oil through the channel of the shaft, it leaks out nicely into the gutter of the tumbler to oil the valves . So, that is ok
Steve, I have a name for your new project. Call it Project Clementine. Clementines are mini oranges. If you think it's more yellow than orange, then you can call it Project Lady Finger.
@@D3Sshooter Yes, the holes in the rocker shaft should go up. This is basic rocker arm engineering. The hole in the rocker lines up only for a short time during lift. This allows oil to run down the groove in the rocker and onto the valve stem. As an example, the SBC has a hole in the pushrod dimple off-center so oil only comes out for a short time during lift.
3 videos in 2 days could't ask for more, keep it up 💪
More to come!

If the shaft is facing upward, the oil will run down the channel in the rocker arm and oil the valve stem. Excellent video! Thank you for sharing...

This is indeed the way a mechanic does :) I think he went for the educative version. But what you describe is the fastest!
Thanks for the info, and yes that is another method with less rotating

Thanks for the visit
Is that a rally prepared Mini Cooper ? WoW
Thanks for the comments, this is the engine of another project
Can you tell me how you do that on a 3 cylinder diesel with no TDC marks.
Not sure if its the video or not but the holes in the old rocker bar looked bigger to me ?
Thanks for the comments, they are about the same, the old once are having a slope on the edges
when number 3 was rocking you could have adjusted number 2,that would have saved you winding it over another revolution.
Thanks sir

Hello sir, can you please tell me the reason for putting oil on the paper gaskets., Is it required?
It is so to make it stick properly and also seal

Hallo, does ik make sense to put lineseed oil on the head gasket?
some do, I don't....that was old time practice and no longer needed

Thanks for the comments , spec's are hard to find on this truck and often its common sense. I looked at another old head to find out the right way
Hi sir im from malesiya
I think you put the first shim in around the wrong way, it should lock into the key way in the shaft.
Thanks for the comments Mark, I will have a check... its been a while but i am sure that it was corrected afterwards
You have not bent the dual hole metal plates to lock the bolts in place!
Thanks for the comments, I did say in the video that I would do it and I did at the end. Its not in the video itself
👍🇦🇺👀
Should the oil hole in the rocker shaft not line up with the hole in the top of the rocker arm to oil the valves.
That is what one would think, but even then those holes on the tumbler and shaft don't line up, I have seen a lot of wear on the old shaft . How long you been working on this car
That has been a while, its every so often , or as soon as I could find the parts
How about the body have you ever finished that? Is it ready to go as soon as you get the motor ready
This shows that this video is 6 months ago do you have anything newer
Oh yes , several including the start-up.... have a look on my channel D3SSHOOTER for the Old Rusty Series

I hope you have hardened the valves and guides to take unleaded fuel, these old engines don’t like modern fuel.
Thanks for the comments, indeed
Something tells me.the valve guides are going to wear out very quickly.

John Simpson , hi john. I just found an old manual and there it is stated. Holes must be facing downwards. So i am good.
@@D3Sshooter Seems odd but you could look at the old shaft. The heaviest wear would be down.
