Correction to the video: You can change the arrangement of the external display via general settings.
Also yes Davinci Resolve is on iPad, but I've paid for a studio license for computers and would have to pay another $100 to get a studio license for iPad. That's my major hurdle, I could have said that better in the video.

Can the iPad replace a laptop for MOST people? YES. Yes it can.
If you are not editing multimedia and or programming, the iPad is pretty dang good as an alternative for a laptop.
I work at the executive level. This means, video calls, notes, calendar, project management, slide decks, word processing, and spreadsheets (spreadsheets is probably the weakest link).
My iPad handles all of this wonderfully. It’s been quite nice, especially since I opted for the cellular option. I can work from anywhere without draining my phone’s battery due to tethering.

Do you do anything on your iPad that cant be done on an iPhone? Like I get that the screen is bigger and that helps, but fundamentally is there anything that an iPhone cant do that you need?
I guess what I'm saying is, another way to interpret your statement is that MOST people dont need a laptop. If they can replace their laptop with an iPad, then the smart phone in their pocket is probably already more computer than they need and they simply need a bigger more useful screen to put it on.

    • @JerryGonzalez
      @JerryGonzalez 4 месяца назад +7

@@MoChuang343 Stage Manager, Keyboard and the Apple Pencil are what differentiates the iPad from the iPhone for me (screen aside).
Stage manager is actually quite good. I hope Apple allows us to create presets of our window configurations, that would go a long way. This allows me to seamlessly float between apps either in a semi full screen fashion or in a split screen view. I’m not sure stage manager gets the credit it deserves. It’s more functional than a lot give it credit for.
The keyboard basically transforms the iPad into a laptop-like configuration. The keyboard shortcuts are extremely helpful. I basically never need to touch the screen when this accessory is attached. I do sometimes forget that I’m not on a MacBook when sucked into work and using an app.
The Apple Pencil allows me to annotate work, draw out proof of concept sketches for new logistical deployments, and of course, sign/fill out documents.
Although the iPad seems like it would be “just a large iPhone”. Each device clearly has its own use. The icing on the cake is, for lightweight tasks, such as emailing or chatting on the go, querying, or doing that “quick thing”, the iPhone is a wonderful companion to my work life, as…you have pointed out, they are so similar.

@@JerryGonzalez Cool thanks for sharing. My iPad isnt Pro which is probably why it feels like a big iPhone to me.
I could never switch to an iPad though. At least not yet. I'm not in charge of anything. I work in academic science and I have to use what ever system is compatible with the professors I am working with. Maybe when I become a professor myself, I can move myself and everyone who works for me to cloud-based applications instead.
Do you think being an exec allows you the freedom to dictate how you work? I imagine you still work for someone above you right? Is there ever any friction where they want something that simply doesnt work on an iPad?
I tried to daily drive Linux. I got about a year into it until I started working on a paper that used EndNote as the reference manager which is Mac/Win only. Converting between a Linux compatible reference Library and back wasnt impossible but it was adding friction to the project and I dont have the authority to justify slowing down a professor for my own tech curiosity.

One of the main things I needed my mobile device to do was connect to my NoNachine client where my Minecraft server runs, and I also wanted to be able to use remote desktop to control my work computer. Those two apps have been released on iPad and significantly updated in the last two years, and I’ve found myself carrying my M1 MacBook Pro around significantly less because my M1 iPad Pro now does everything I typically need from my MacBook! I definitely still need a Mac for power user tasks, but I find myself only doing those tasks when I’m at my desk with my Mac mini now, so I don’t really need the MacBook Pro anymore. Apple isn’t wrong, for people with lighter workloads (mine for example is watching content, doing some lighter spreadsheets and simple multitasking, art, music creation ideas, and even some Remote Desktop activities), the iPad Pro is totally a replacement for my mobile computer. It doesn’t do ALL the professional tasks I need, but I personally don’t do those on the go anyway, so my home Mac covers those tasks.

I've decided to switch from Macbook air(last with intel processor) to new iPad 11 inch M4 for few reasons. Main reason is that Macbook is limited to MacOS app versions and many developers, even with all M... chip support for mobile apps are not willing to add them on Macbook. You have all those streaming platforms that do not have their app on Macbook. If you do not have fast internet then you have bad luck and you cannot watch anything nowadays. Very frustrating. The only thing I really need a Mac for is Logic. But then I might aswell get a Mac Mini (waiting for the M4 Pro release) and a proper desktop sized display anyway. Also I have all my music gear at home, I wouldn't be taking it with me anyway. So for everything else I can do that on a 5G M4 iPad Pro 13 and take it with me much easier. 2. If you have a computer and internet and cellular then run Remote Desktop.
    3. If you have a business budget then you can try a Cloud PC to run MacOS/Linux/WIn11 etc
    4. Use an external monitor and bt keyboard/touchpad/mouse if needed (ensure compatible with your remote desktop choice.
Then you can work productivity on your iPad. iPadOS for a lot of cases is deliberately over-restrictive or "kind of works/kind of does not work" which seems a feature not a bug on purpose by Apple to ensure customers need laptops as well as iPads.
The above options are the current best bet for using an iPad instead of a laptop until Apple provide virtualization app options also.

I am an artist and need the sketching ability so Macbook is out. Right now I normally take my Surface Pro with me since I need the full Windows (MacOS) for some software that iPadOS does not use. Also find the file management on iPadOS as clunky and annoying. I like Windows best for file management but MacOS is a close second for me. Also so far the opposite of MacOS software goes for the Mac Studio too. To date I have not been able to run iPadOS or iOS apps on MacOS. I understand with iOS and iPadOS 18 that has changed but not using it so far since iOS 18 not out yet. Basically, right now the Surface Pro does all that I need off desktop so I normally go that route. If the Windows/Android combination hybrid were totally I would just go the Windows environment. So, between Apple and Microsoft/INTEL there is still no perfect environment.

So my iPad is essentially a full blown computer replacment - i use it 100% and I can even link into my work PC and control it. The cost to upgrade to the new M4 is not worth it - it’s more of a style change and a weight reduction than any real increase in productivity. M1 still plenty fast for iOS.

I have 3 4k monitors and 1 5k monitor on my desk. Runs fine on a Mac Studio. If I wanted to do this with a MacBook, then I'd need the Max chip. My professional software has iPad versions but they are severely gimped. So I have no need for an iPad Pro. I have a bunch of other macOS programs that I prefer to use on macOS rather than an iPad. I also run Windows VMs on a regular basis and I know that people are trying to do this on iPads but you really want 32 GB of RAM or more for this and I don't know if people have it working comfortably.

Easy decision… then found it only had 44 battery cycles and was an M1 Max chip i was singing and dancing… I’m happy with my m2 iPad Pro still…. Only negative is your OS Shirt lol 😂 but seriously I love the IPad Pro as a computer it is best of both worlds, Only one small thing for me keep me having a Mac and that is being able to export to excel from one of my work sites. I wish they would give IPad a Mac OS light option for when on the keyboard or plugged into external monitor. I don’t need full Mac just a light version which I am sure they could do!!

It’s not supposed to to be a laptop replacement. At least not for the vast majority of professionals. I love using it for media consumption, light work at coffee shops, entertainment/ work on planes, messaging, browsing the web, answering emails, reading and annotating documents, social media, a bit of gaming, as an external monitor for my laptop while travelling etc. I travel a ton, so these aspects really make it worth it to me. And while I could do a lot of the things I mentioned on my phone or laptop, it’s just so much more comfortable doing it on an IPad a lot of the time. It’s more of nice-to-have than a need-to-have for me. An IPad (pro) is also really good for note-taking if you’re a student or drawing/ designing if you’re a creative professional. I understand why an IPad Pro isn’t worth the high price tag for most people, but it’s not intended to be a device for everyone imo (that’s what the regular IPad or IPad Air are for). If you’re on a budget and/ or won’t use your IPad much, simply get a cheaper Ipad. If you’re looking for a laptop replacement and an IPad can’t do everything you do on your laptop, just get a laptop.

What the heck!? You can control how the external monitor is arranged on the ipad on the display settings. It's just right there: Settings --> Display & Brightness --> Arrangement.
The ipad can do a lot of things but it feels suffocating to do so. I tried making the entire ecommerce shop using only the ipad as the computer. From coding, to photo editing, photoshop, illustrator to make the logo, etc. Everything can be done, but the good old habit of using the apps on the desktop just make the entire experience on the ipad feel suffocating.

No, absolutely not! It’s not even close and, at times, completely frustrating.

I think reviews like this miss the point. You did not have your desktop setup for things you want to do. Obviously you have no experience actually using the iPad. You make the iPad look of limited use. In fact, if it is customized with widgets and all the things needed, it is a great machine. You did not show file sharing. Why? You didn’t even explain how to handle files. Why?

I feel as if what the people want is the equivalent of Star Trek TNG padds, super lightweight computers that can do everything, but modern day tablets are in this weird hybrid zone where they are slightly more powerful than a cellphone but are still not powerful enough to replace a laptop. I ask myself if Apple could have developed a true laptop replacement by now if it weren't for the fact that they want to make more money by selling both laptops and tablets.

I *could* image myself working on similar combo (iPad + keyboard). Having a remote desktop through RDP or VNC as a backup for apps which cannot work on iPad natively. *BUT* the biggest question is: *WHY?!* ... An MacBook Air would be more versatile, more universal and - with a bit of effort - even cheaper.

max HDR brightness, pixel density, resolution, color accuracy and somehow contrast ratio are all identical to the last gen mini LED iPad.
Sometimes I truly wonder what the hell apple does with all that time during product development. If anything the biggest upgrade is the jump from M4 to M2 even though only 10 apps can fully use all that power on iOS.
Either apple is being greedy and they know people will buy anything with the logo OR this is a mid cycle product refresh until the micro OLED iPads come out.

I have the m1 iPad 12.9 and I'm still satisfied. I was like oled I'm on it when i seen the price i could just go and upgrade just for being lighter, and screen. I still have the MacBook pro m1 max and the m3 is only a few seconds faster. Look I love apple everything is apple accept my gaming computer. Its just over priced now for an iPad pro. I think for the most part any laptop/ tablet can do peoples every day workloads like RUclips, browsing, email and photo editing and to some degree video editing. I think the days of having to buy an expensive computer for those tasks are over. Even today's tablets are as fast as 5-6 year old computers almost at least when it comes to benchmarks.
I have a MacBook m3 max and a rex 4080 gaming pc and I could exchange my MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air and probably wouldn't notice a difference and I could exchange my 4080 for a 4070 and unless I had a 4k monitor I probably wouldn't notice a difference at 1080-1440 resolution.
I find it interesting how we think we need so much horse power in today's technology when we could actually get by using a whole lot less. On the flip side though if you buy something with not enough power you can't magically upgrade as most of us have limited resources when it comes to $ and so we find a deal and get the most bang for buck as it's easier to have a system that's more than enough rather than too little.
Long story short I mostly watch RUclips >< lol so my phone has more than enough power 😆
