It was late evening in the vast slowly cooling desert. A lone figure walked slowly toward the sunset. As the sun fell the cold began to close in and he pulled his thin cloak closer. A thousand shades of red filled the horizon near the red orb as it slowly set. He looked toward the sky for direction. The sky looked like red and blue ink had been spilled across it. As the colors faded to black the stars slowly showed themselves one by one twinkling with great brilliance. It was so calm, quiet, and black in the night of the desert that he could barely make out the shapes around him.

Across the desert, on foot, he drifted. The slight figure of a young man, he strolled casually forward, as the sand shifted below his feet. As the sand drifted down the windward face of a tall dune, a short distance up ahead on the left he could hear pebbles roll from the rocks above. He thought, “It is probably just a lizard or scorpion. My many trips into the desert have taught me the difference between them and a man. My fear has dissipated over the years as I have become accustomed to the sounds of the desert night. I can barely see my feet. I am thankful to the Lord for the faint moonlight.”...

I think you’re fantastic Mr. Rowe! I would love to hear your take on a story. Similar to “The Beginning” (short story) by Henry Hasse. But the story of an early prehistoric pre-human earth man. Maybe a giant/hybrid race of some sort from earth. Pre-flood sort of world full of mystery. Breathtaking megalithic stone structures. That the simple being who maybe is the last of a dying breed. Would discover this advanced but abandoned civilization. But on earth in a far distant past. A human like thinking race but not human. But different thinking maybe more superstitious and living hand to mouth. Stumbling through the already ancient ruins. And he would eventually be discovered. By an advanced non earth based race. That recognizes this being as the last of his race and civilization. And seeks to preserve him somehow…. Anyway, I love pre-flood mythology of more advanced civilizations. Anyway you’re awesome keep up the great work.

Thanks, Justin! I've got a pair of stories you might like if you haven't checked them out yet: "Becoming" and "Stewards of the Drawdown." I think they check almost all your boxes minus the megaliths. I definitely need to work some megaliths into the channel lore somehow! Tragic oversight 😲Thanks for the Hasse recommendation.

One of the most powerful thoughts in this story is Clem’s idea that he should keep certain truths, like his identity, from the Howards. This lie while on the surface seems wrong was not, because to tell the whole truth would not do anyone other than Clem any good. He recognized that to tell the truth was really only a selfish act to relieve his own guilty feelings. It was better overall that he suffered his guilt than use “telling the truth” as an excuse for his own good, because, again, no other good could come of it.
On the surface it seems that always be truthful is the best course of action. Most times it is. But when the person telling the truth is the only one who benefits, and moreover, at the cost of other’s feelings or safety, is the real wrong thing to do.
Living well and honestly can preclude having to make this kind of decision, but circumstances cannot always be controlled in such a way as to never find one’s self in this position. I have a special respect for those who are able to bear such pain when it is actually the seed of their destruction. Though it is also a great sadness that separates some from others for what seems to be “fate’s” directives.
I hope PER continues to write stories that lead to such disclosures of how not simple the world really is.

Thanks, John. One of the most elegant descriptions of what the prefrontal cortex does comes from Sapolsky, and it might as well stand in for a few definitions--wisdom, morality maybe. I might butcher it, but it's something like: the prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain that enables you to do the right thing when the doing the right thing is the hard thing. Pretty deep philosophy for a neurology class.

    • @johnt.inscrutable1545
      @johnt.inscrutable1545 7 месяцев назад

@@RoweLit Absolutely! And isn’t amazing that it’s possible for that to happen? How? Just does that work? Human biology is amazing in all its detail, but the brain is wicked crazy, so to speak. Sadly, I made this body from spare parts, JB Weld, baling wire and duct tape. So it doesn’t always behave as intended.

"Time is not what you think it is."
That took me straight to the Entity's final revelation on Reality: The Mobius Strip.
    - Preservation Falls
Question: they both have the nanites in common/baseline. Still, Clem seems to be orders of magnitude more powerful. How discrepant are they, both being immortal?
(I don't understand how Clem dares to blame Verona. Don't explain it. I just think its a nice touch.)
You don't have to answer this as the purpose is to leave it somewhat open to interpretation, I suspect.
I have no specific compliment today as the way you're pulling the audience in speaks for itself - it's all in the comments.
2024 has much in store as promised!
I wanted to comment on Inertia but I couldn't. I can't. It's still sinking in!

Cheers, Holzman! Part of Aballi's difference comes from the tech he stole and has been using for centuries (more nanotech), but a big part of what makes him so different is his freedom from the constraints of the Verona's sect's training. Their goal is to be invisible. He has other thoughts on that 😂
