Thanks for the clear instructions! I cleaned my laptop heatsink and replace the thermal paste with MX-4. Temp Idle 60C -> 54C and Temp Max Load 100C -> 79C. And the laptop case no longer burn to the touch.
excellent video, on my second 'trip' inside to clean and install new base and fan. however, where you apply thermal paste doesn't look like my n5110, what are you applying thermal paste to? a different heatsink option?

Hi! What tools do I need to open it up? I'm looking for a tool set that will do the whole job. Also, I spilled water on my keyboard and it seems to have clogged one of the keys, which makes my laptop beep on startup, anyway to fix this?

I have an issue now , the fan is touching something and is squeaking while running, I tried few times but it still wont stop squeaking when running quickly, i think the metal of the heatsink is bent , any ideas if this will damage my laptop or I could leave it as is ?
hello, i also disassembled my laptop by following this video step by step but when i turned it on again, the LCD did not display anything but it worked when i connected it with my TV through HDMI. I ran the BIST test on it and it shows the color, but then when it restart, it display the Dell Logo for 1 second then it turned black again. One note is that it sometimes it displayed, but for 1 sec, and the screen turned black again, i tried to reconnect the LCD cable several times, but it is still the same..is the problem in my LCD or it is the video chip?

And my biggest question is can u use thermal pad+paste? Thre r so many videos with lots of diff. views. Could use all the help I cld get cz I have an overheating prob. and no parts have been replaced in my n5110 since 2011.

what is the difference? I think I need to replace my fan which has gotten very loud and annoying.
One is for Discrete graphics and one is for Intel graphics. That laptop had 2 different motherboard options. You should match you part number before ordering.
Is it possible to add one more fan and a vent to the laptop cause mine is only heating at the bottom left part
Mathew Jacob No, it only has room for one fan. You could try putting the laptop on a cooling pad, that might help.

Unfortunately I do not have a video showing how to apply the thermal paste. It's simple, apply an mount about the size of a pea to the CPU and GPU.
Hi I think I deattached something from my motherboard. Its a rectangular green color piece,size of the dell logo written below the screen. It has a white little socket and a big round hole size of the screw mount where the LCD panel is screwed in. Any idea where it has broken off from?

Yeah, its an attachment that keeps the motherboard in place, it has to be fitted near the right speaker where the motherboard meets it. No issues even if it isn't there. :)
The black foam like substance on the metal part at the exhaust of the Fan was partially lost or might have evaporated ! Is that an important part ?

I disassembled my laptop by following your guide word to word however the LCD will not display anything now when switched on - however everything is working when laptop linked to other screen via HDMI cable.
what do you think it could be and how can I resolve this?
Check and make sure the LCD cable is connected to the motherboard and didn't come unplugged. It's most likely just a loose cable.
It definitely is, disassembled it again to check. Is there any other thing it could be?

I need to replace a motherboard. It is for the Dell Inspiron 15R (N5110) motherboard. I was wondering since i`m good with desktops and not laptops what kind of thermal grease and thermal pads should i use. Ive never had to replace thermal pads before.
Arctic Silver is a good thermal paste. You will probably have to go to an electronics store for the thermal pads. Just use the same type that is existing. The brand isn't that important.

Make sure the keyboard cable is plugged in all the way. A loose cable will keep the keyboard from working.
My laptop's idle temperature is 55°c - 65°c
Will arctic silver 5 thermal compound help me out to decrease the temperature of my dell n5110
Praveen Kumar Cleaning the fan and heatsink of dust and debris, and applying new heatsink compound should allow for better cooling. Using a cooling pad will help lower the temperatures also.

One of the screws on my motherboard was stripped. How do you suggest I go about removing it?
By using an electric screwdriver or drill and a lot of downward pressure. That's how I usually take care of stripped screws.
Are motherboards that strong to take a drill? Should I stop after I break the head off or try to see if I can get the whole thing off?

If you don't remove the heatsink from the motherboard, you will not have to reapply thermal compound.

My laptop has been making awful grinding noises only when the fan starts up. I had taken it to a place and told them that 2 screws had fallen out so would need to be located where theyr missing and replaced, and that i was pretty sure i needed a new fan. They fixed my usb ports that didnt work (another issue i had) but said they found no missing screws (bs cus they didnt come from nowhere) and said the fan was fine (also bs cus it grinds as soon as i hit the F****** power button). Unfortunately this took them almost 5 weeks and i didnt wanna go without it for another month so i just left that along with what they charged me. I got so duped by that "repair" place. So i decided i will just DIY it but I am scared of using thermal paste and pads... If anyone would be so kind as to offer me a little instruction on whats involved and if its hard etc, I would gladly just buy the parts of this link and do it myself.
+Auron710 This laptop isn't necessarily difficult to work on, just intimidating. The thermal pads, in most cases, will not be fully remove and can be reused if they are not damaged. The thermal paste is simple, remove old thermal paste on the heatsink and the motherboard with alcohol, but take note on which chips on the motherboard the thermal is on. After the fan is repaired or replaced, get a trusted brand of thermal paste, like Arctic Silver, and apply a small amount (less than the size of a small pea) to each of the chips that you cleaned off previously. Replace the heatsink, tightening down the screws in the order listed on the heatsink and you should be all set. Here is a written manual also. +Parts-People.Com, Inc thanks for ur reply, After watching the video for probably a thrid time i am confident i can replace the fan myself (i will have my friend who majored in programming and built his own pc with me to make sure i dont mess up lol) but one think im not sure of is the mention of thermal pads, i understand what the thermal paste is and have looked up application videos with the pea method u mentioned, do i also need to buy thermal pads or something? (sorry for really dumb questions ive literally never built a pc or opened a laptop)
+Auron710 It would be smart to replace the thermal pads at the same time as everything else but it's not always necessary. If you do, they are called thermal silicone pads. They usually come in a larger piece that you cut to size, something like 100mm x 100mm x 5mm.
