This new Quarry Hunslet locomotive is an extremely beautiful looking model and there are multiple variations of this particular model from Bachmann to choose.
Yep, like I mentioned in the video there's also the open cab versions of this loco too. Bachmann have also announced/released the Mainline Hunslets recently as well, which look very good! Thanks for watching 😃
Several of my friends in the OO9 Society have brought these engines to our monthly track nights, and they really are lovely little things - and very, very tempting. The fact they run so well out of the box is impressive, and positive. As an aside, the Quarry Hunslets could well have been the original inspiration for Rowland Emmett's 'Nellie' - if you look at the early drawings, you're clearly looking at a Penrhyn Hunslet. And can I say that your layout is lovely to see - like it very much.
Hi John, I can definitely seen the similarities there even with a fantastical sense! Glad you like the layout too, I actually did a whole series of videos where I documented the build process from start to finish. Thanks for watching 😃
Very nice review of this iconic loco. Level of detailing seems outstanding, especially considering its microscopic size. Though the starting and stopping speeds are high, while running around the layout it looks pretty good to me. It must be difficult stuffing a decent motor and gearing inside that tiny boiler. Great job to all.
Yes I think it's a coreless motor which is how it can be so small. Not sure if that has anything to do with the running but it does look good on the layout. Fingers crossed I'll be able to get it sorted. Thanks for watching 😃
I love quarry Hunslets, I volunteer on the footplate at the Bala Lake Railway. I'd definitely suggest adding the wooden toolbox on the tank, as the Pen-yr-Orsedd examples had them in service and Britomart carries her's still (along with a tiny navy steam siren)
Ah fantastic, I love the Bala Lake Railway! Yes Britomart will definitely be getting the details added to her once I've sorted out the running issues. Thanks for watching 😃
I saw a Bachmann open cab Hunslet in black with red, white and blue lining. It looked really handsome, and I think it would make a great addition to your fleet. Also, Britomart could be Godfod Tynn's express engine.
Ah yes that must have been Nesta. If I do get an open cab version I think that's the one I'd go for. Britomart has certainly got the speed for an express engine, it's definitely outpacing the Double Fairlies at the moment! Thanks for watching 😃
Knowing Bachmann they may well be around for a while (if the Baldwins and the Double Fairlies are anything to go by) so you could always keep an eye on them for the future 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
The current batch has been out a while now so is most likely sold out most places. But because they've been so popular I would imagine Bachmann are working on releasing another batch as soon as they can. Thanks for watching 👍
Great review! I just bought Nesta (thought I pre-ordered it before it came out, turns out I didn't lol) and I'm excited to get it soon! I do hope the running speed was just a one off fluke because it doesn't look too great taking off like a car from the platform. Definitely a wonderful model and I'm so excited to see what other manufacturers have in store for OO9!
Yeah I certainly hope the speed can be improved on mine as it's such a good looking loco. Bachmann definitely are flying the narrow gauge flag at the moment but PECO are definitely dipping their toes in the water more and Model Rail are supposedly making the Rheidol locos in 009 too. Thanks for watching 😃
It certainly is gorgeous, I went into a model shop near me to see about a different 009 release and ended up walking away with this lovely loco as my original search wasnt in store, soon though,
Very nice review!! Just to add one point, from what I know the doors on the back are mainly to aid the fireman in spreading the coal evenly around the firebox as large long fire irons don't fit properly in the cab. Locos like Corries No.7 have a similar opening for the same reason.
Ah that makes sense, thanks for the clarification! Funny, I hadn't even considered that the cab would be too small to use a fire iron properly. Thanks for watching 😃
What a gorgeous little loco! Such a pity about the lack of slow speed running, I am looking forward to seeing it on DCC to see if there’s any improvement.
Yes the slow speed is a shame but I've got some other ideas as well as fitting it for DCC which I might try. I just don't want to mess around with it too much if it turns out to be a bigger problem though! Thanks for watching 😃
Hey, absolutely love it as always 👍, I’m looking to get into 009 and I was wondering if you could do reviews on more of your rolling stock and maybe even track and things like that. It would be great to get some more insight into the details. Keep up the great work, George
Hi George, have you seen the whole 009 series I did where I built a layout from scratch? That covers everything like track and scenery. As for rolling stock, mine is a mixture of PECO RTR and kit built items which I have some tutorials planned on for the future. Thanks for watching 😃
Gofod Tynn is a very nice layout. Small and compact. One day, However, I would like to see a Much Bigger OO9 scale layout to be built. One that demonstrates the hard working conditions Welsh Narrow Gauge Engines went through in large Slate Quarries. I, being a Thomas Fan, made my own OC's, and one day, when I start modeling, hopefully, I will recreate most of my OC's in OO & OO9 scale.
As nice as it would be to have a large 009 layout, unlike a lot of other model railway RUclipsrs, I just don't have the loft/shed space or a dedicated room for large layouts. That's why everything I build tends to be fairly compact. Even the 00 gauge layout I'm currently building is modular in design since it I don't have the space to have it setup all the time. Awesome, best of luck with creating your characters - it's always great to see the different types of creativity this hobby brings out! Thanks for watching 😃
Great review, certainly a great loco with incredible detail. It's slow speed running does improve but it needs a lot of running in before it becomes more responsive at slower speeds.
Glad you enjoyed it David. At the time of filming this model had been run in for an hour in each direction. I may keep trying that but I'm curious to see if a decoder does make any difference since that has made a difference in the past. Thanks for watching 😃
I need to get one of these. Heres a idea. Now there are these smaller DCC decoders out there I wonder if retrofitting the basic Hornby 0-4-0 models will be a lot better now especially with their tight spaces inside them?
I have to admit I didn't find hardwiring a decoder into a Hornby 0-4-0 all that challenging when I did it with a standard size 8 Pin. I even had enough space left over to fit in a firebox LED and a smoke generator. Thanks for watching 😃
I don't think so, they were very popular when they first came out. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Bachmann were planning another batch at some point. Thanks for watching 😃
Fingers crossed that's the case. It had an hour running in each direction before the video was filmed but maybe it just needs more. Thanks for watching 😃
Beautiful little engine but yes the speed is fast. Hope with decoder in you can slow it down. Would love to see the open cab version of this engine. So glad you shared it with us. GOD BLESS 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
Yes definitely a good looking engine and I really do hope I can sort the speed out. I think an open cabbed version will be joining Britomart very soon! Thanks for watching 😃
Just a quick question I watch from the states will you ship over seas? BTW I think the videos are great. Especially love the Gofod Tynn series. I want it downloaded.
Hi there, I don't sell anything I just review the models so you'd have to ask individual retailers about that. Glad you enjoyed the 009 series though. Thanks for watching 😃
my assumption to it struggling at low speeds before taking off might be due to its lack of weight, being so small of course. some 0-4-0s have that issue at 00 Gauge and you compare them to the Peckett W4s which, mechanically are essentially the same but they weigh a good bit more for the size and have plenty of low end torque and control.
Yes that may be the case. I believe the saddle tank is metal (it's certainly cold to the touch) but it's still fairly light so it may just be it's not contacting the rails enough. The Pecketts are certainly enormous compared to this. Thanks for watching 😃
That looks like an awesome engine! Hope to get one someday. Bachmann USA is gonna release Talyllyn, which I believe is re-colored from their Skarloey tooling. It's ready for pre-order. Are you gonna review it when it comes out?
Hi Mitchell, not sure about Talyllyn yet. As much as I'd like one I think the slightly longer wheelbase means it would struggle to get round Gofod Tynn. I'd like to build a more substantial 009 layout in the future but I'm not sure I can justify buying locos I can't actually run at the moment. Thanks for watching 😃
Roughly 45-50mm. I actually had trouble with the kit built coaches originally being too tall for them so the height had to be reduced! Thanks for watching 😃
I definitely think a review of the open cab version is on the cards! Bachmann have recently announced/released the Mainline Hunslets so I suspect their next 009 announcement will be those in their current condition at the Ffestiniog Railway... but I would love to see a Garret too! You can fit a Doehler & Haass PD05A-4 decoder. I tried to give you a link to the Tramfabriek, who have them in stock, but my post was immediately deleted.
