      I always loved the idea of the Vong, as well. I mean, just imagine it: This entire civilization has traveled from far across the Intergalactic Void, over *millennia*, to get HERE! I mean, how awesome is that? :-)
      So many questions arise in my mind: What has life evolved to, in another galaxy? What form has Life taken? What does technology look like? Do other galaxies have The Force, too? Do they also have galaxy-wide civilizations connected by FTL travel? Etc., etc.

    I love the vision of Timothy Zahn with his books, because he seems to see Star Wars similarly to how I do - focusing more on "realistic" sci-fy/ science fantasy possibilities within a fictional universe and not using it primarily as a platform for pushing political agendas. He makes more believable characters and interesting storylines that grow beyond the original trilogy, taking the story into new directions without destroying or invalidating the established lore.

      Not really, I’m kinda glad they scrapped the EU, they really had no choice but to start over. Most of the EU had no cohesion and the best EU ideas are pretty easy to graft onto the new canon because the best EU works are *self-sufficient* and work really well on their own. As much as I love heir to the empire and the vong era, it would be nigh impossible to directly adapt those into a new trilogy and do it well

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro 4 года назад +8

      I think I could add that Vongs are needed as justification for Palpatine tactic. Empire Fleet was prepared to deal with threats way above what exactly they could encounter in that region and vastly unprepared to deal with pirates and rebels. Problem with Vong was that they were overpowered without they design actually reflecting that. It is why people jokingly call them space orcs. Grysks did have modern weapons and in fact competent intelligence and tactic, so they did have possibility to threat full fledged military. On top of that whole mystery angle make unclear if they were just clever local threat or they are actually vanguard of interstellar conquest. It is in fact quite clever writing.

    Well the First order must have found a way to deal with the Grisk. Even after episode 9 there are still first order bases, planets, storehouses, ships, and production facilities in the unknown regions. They only showed some resurgent class ships taken out. No one invaded and took out their holdings in the unknown regions. We know they had lots of ISD’s they modified and smaller ships they used in the unknown regions. I’d LOVE to see Zahn write about this. I recently purchased the Zahn 1995 books and his newer books on Audible.

      I'm not sure how though. The first order Disney provided us was filled with incompetent commanders. The Grysks have proven to be a highly intelligent force with terrifying ability to subvert civilisations.
      More likely the first order simply ignored the Grysks and the Grysks were busy warring with the Chiss who knows.

    This sounds like a major post episode 9 storyline to me. Galaxy is fractured. No standing government and likely separate cells of first order in control of spots.
    We could have different factions ruling the galaxy. A perfect storm for the a Grysks to invade a galaxy in chaos and turmoil. The resistance may have won but there’s no structure currently. One Jedi cannot fight hordes of the Grysks.

    I’m quite intrigued by the kind of Mongol/Hun/Avar inspiration element of the Grysk. The Mongols adapted and adopted tech from clients, made heavy use of scouting but were ultimately defeated by a breakdown of the empire into competing factions. Huns (Black Huns of Attila fame) were more a confederacy with the original nomads only comprising a small amount of the vast power they wielded using subjugated clients. They were defeated by the remnants of the western Roman Empire along with Germanic and other nomadic allies who occupied former Roman lands, their ultimate defeat coming after Attila died and the subjugated people rebelling. Avars devastated the Balkans subjugated the people living there and defeated the Eastern Romans numerous times. They were defeated when The Franks gathered a large army and after defeating them in battle numerous times made it to the almost legendary Avar capital which was an unusual city of many concentric circles. A theme for all was the adaption to their ways of fighting and the use of their warriors as mercenaries before, during and long after their ascendency.
    Looking at the possible inspirations there is a lot that could come from this Grysk narrative.
