- This video show's common mistakes made from DIY repairs to the 2013 Chevy Malibu instrument cluster. It goes over the 1.2k R203 resistor, damaged stepper motors and general cluster disassembly tips and needle calibration.

@@Diaen that ended up going in a completely different direction than I originally thought. I have forgotten that the power LED indicator had quit working properly, and that it actually was turned on. It ended up being the HDMI input on my TV. I use a Vizio TV that has been slowly dropping HDMI inputs. It originally had five and now it's down to two that are still working. So it was a faulty TV this whole time (and power LED).

Quick tip when you lose small items in the carpet....Cover the end of your vacuum hose with some pantyhose and it should help catch any small items you wouldnt be able to find in the fibers of the carpet

Your videos alongside Matt's have been the basis of me going from just doing custom mods on my own truck, to now doing customer volume with auto electronics and finding I'm getting better and better at board work. Board works has been a life changing development for me I was wondering as someone who got into board work through auto electronics, what are other good horizons to expand too for this type of work? Thank you for all the information and questions you've replied to for me, I don't know if I ever would of got into board work at this degree if they weren't there to teach me

Well no not exactly, if you push these past the stops that's what breaks them. That's why this had a broken stepper motor, the needle was removed improperly. With the Malibu you just have to pull straight up.

@@nenadmijailovic7786 Yes. That will happen with an x27 style stepper motor. But not all stepper motors are the same.
I never criticize your repair work, ever as I feel you are a true master of board level repair and have a huge data base inside your head to work from so do not take this question as anything other than what it is, an honestly I am interested question. @ 8:03 I noticed the IPA move when you pressed on the resistor, is there an off chance with out using some UV resin that the vibration inherent in machines might break those connections?
As usual and as I have said a hunnard (sic) times the videos are the bomb, the conceptualization, scripting and videography is spot on for your target audience and you are a master at Board level repairs... thanks for the ride along sir.
That's a fair question. The resistor isn't floating, so I don't think the liquid you saw was coming from underneath maybe from just around. From my own experience components breaking off from vibration is less likely than I originally anticipated when I first started working on automotive PCBs. But if someday that connection does fail, I offer a lifetime warranty on my workmanship. And I will make changes as needed to make it improved.
@@jeffescortlx I appreciate the reply sir. I did component repair on PCBs in locomotives as a composite mechanic. Running broken, damaged traces with copper wire and sometimes the components would break the new traces. BUT locomotives tend to shake the horns off Satan so.... thanks brother have a great one!
@@jeffescortlx if components are likely to break off from vibration then those vibrations will likely have already destroyed the connections inside your MLCC (capacitors) on the pcb.
The mass of the resistor is so low that vibration won't have a significant effect on the long term durability of the connection.

That cluster looked like an owl with big eyes, mind you i havn't seen an owl with a multi pin plug up its bum :-D

@@danman9017 with that style you can give it a little push twist past the stopping point to help break it free.
I notice in your other videos (with the microscope video) that you attached the jumpers in pairs. Now I know why! You're using a "gallium-arsenide jumper lead holder"!

What size and type of jumper wire you use for torn leads
I see magnet wire or copper wire but nothing draws in solder properly
For short runs that don't require an insulated wire I just use cut off lamp leads.
For longer runs I use magnet wire. You just have to burn through the enamel coating and make sure you use flux.
Should i power cycle the unit before putting the needles back on to make sure they are at zero?
For best results you need to power it up out of the vehicle. If you use the vehicle to power it up, the gauges will try to do things and they'll move off of zero.
Have you ever fixed a 1994 Chevy Impala SS digital cluster? A common problem is the odometer flakes out with the wrong mileage and/or errors.
Yes I think I might have years ago.
What makes them flake out typically? I reflowed the joints on the sister board. Seems to work for now. I also cleaned the contacts for the vacuum display.
@@rsnarski3 it's usually fractured solder joints. Sometimes it's at the header pins and sometimes that resistors.
