Just to give a reference point on the costs of the new D&D 2024 books - the three 3.5e edition books (PHB, MM, DMG), published in June 2003, were USD 29.95 each. I'm using those as a baseline as, prior to those full-colour, glossy print tomes, the books are mainly black and white with a bit of highlight colour or, in the case of 3e (2000) were underpriced as a loss-leader to drive adoption. So, today (June 2024), based on CPI changes, that 29.95 would be around USD 51.12, or USD 153.36 for the set.

I submit, once again, the "inclusion" of a female to male drow inside of Bregan d'aerthe in Waterdeep: Dragon Heist as an example of "inclusion" to include with no actual game/story effect at all.
Why the hell would anyone in Drow society choose to be male?
Why do this at all
@user-cs4su3ng9l For inclusions sake. There is no other reason that I can fathom. Now, understand, I could actually use this in a number of ways. Is "he" perhaps there to spy for a house? Does "he" get found out and has to murder that person who discovered "him" and then pins the blame on the pcs? A lot more plot hooks can easily come to mind, but they would be plot hooks YOU would have to create? This surely is the point then. Why bring it up at all without some sort of plot relevance? For inclusion.
I paid about 180 aud for the 5e books, sounds like I'd need to pay 300 for 5.5 if I felt like burning money for a minor improvement to some of the 5e mechanics buried within a mountain of garbage.

I'm an ethnic Chinese guy who has lived most of my life in Canada and I started playing D&D in the early 1980s. I never cared about race (as in human ethnicities) because most of us played non-humans. However, I was excited when the Oriental Adventures came out because it was influenced by Chinese and Japanese cultures (but most pop culture). Now the wokeists say OA is racist because it misrepresents Asians - for fuck sake, I was lucky to have "presentation" in D&D and now they're saying it's racist (it wasn't), which means we'll never get an updated Oriental Adventures because people like Daniel Kwan says so. Oh, "oriental" isn't a racist term - I referred to myself as "oriental" from the 70s to the 90s and I hate referring myself as "Asian" since I don't live in Asia.
Kwan went on to make an adventure for WotC's candlekeep book that turned out to be based on Kung Fu movies, with as little or less authenticity than Oriental Adventures had.
@@RPGPundit He had the balls to say monks are racist to Chinese when monks since 1E have been based on the Chinese wuxia genre (think "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). The D&D monk is first and foremost, like all of the other D&D classes, based on fantasy pop culture, not real cultures.
Funny how the point of an RPG is often to let anybody become anything they want if they train hard enough to develop the needed experience to prove themself.

@@RPGPundit Ah my apologies to Meatball!
In a recent conversatiom about this, I asked a friend if, perhaps, this overtly inclusive slant that One D&D art is taking may be meant to trigger some kind of social backlash in the D&D community against such inclusion, in favor of a sharp return to a more traditional, less-inclusive, non-PC, arguably anti-leftist grognardia. It sounds a little conspiratorial, but whether it's meant that way, merely getting that reaction and looking that way would amount to almost the same, so I suppose we'll see.
I doubt this theory. I think that the people currently in charge of the design of D&D are very much true believers in DEI. However, what you're suggesting might become truth anyways, if the sales of OneDnD end up being very poor.
What about the art in the new 8th Castles & Crusades PHB? It seems to me they replaced the beautiful warriors and knights with ✝emblems with rEpReSeNtAtIoN. What is your favourite D&D edition(s) RPG Pundit, and why?
If we're talking an official edition, my favorite was the Rules Cyclopedia.
@@RPGPundit Interesting. A f*ck ton of errors in that book. Weird, given it was essentially a compilation. TSR had gotten sloppy/complacent by then, I suppose. That was the edition (BECMI) I played the most, although we, like almost everyone, made up our own house rules to fix rules that were broken, such as the Deflect ability in Weapon Mastery.
Not only is the "representation" in the new books unlikely to attract more black people to try out D&D, if anything it's likely to do the opposite. The biggest obstacle keeping black people away from TTRPGs is the attitude within *black* culture that shames and discourages people within that community for "acting white", a label that certainly includes TTRPGs (among other things such as academic achievement and getting along with corporate workplace culture). The new art we've seen for the upcoming PHB just replaces the classic heroic fantasy aesthetic with a weird fantasy version of hipster culture...which I'm sure doesn't make it look any less "white".
Very good point!
Olde enough to have played AD&D Oriental Adventures and D&D's The Emirates of Ylaruam. Neither was particularly western in nature and were a bit fantastical (hey, its D&D) but it was fun nonetheless to trade the olde TSR Tolken tropes for something new. Same with MAR Barkers Empire of the Petal Throne which was a mix of South Asian and Mesoamerican culture thrown in a blender with a lot of 70s and 80s weirdness. Good times. Seemed a bit more authentic then despite the inaccuracies. I guess its like punk, where you can tell the real thing from the fake, even if its not following the formula.
And still people are going to buy it...

Japanese play quite a lot of RPG too. They even have several D&D inspired anime
And here in french speaking Europe we have quite a bunch of local RPGs which you "must" check 😉
Yes, Japan is a singular exception in Asia though
Black gamers weren't waiting for white-run companies to draw pictures of us before we started playing RPGs. Nor did we think that giving orcs an intelligence penalty has anything to do with us; we recognize ourselves as humans. Its shows that they are pandering to a adult audience that are willing to spend that money on D&D. I dont buy from them because the prices are ridiculous and they are just kind of creatively empty. the funny thing is that nobody cares about the art in dnd books, if you want art reference just google, its not like generic fantasy setting is just easy to look for, meanwhile games where the setting is more niche then the book having art is also a matter of helping creating a collective visual vocabulary of things to facilitate team play
I tend to disagree with that. The artwork gives the mood of the game. We see arts from Shadowdark and Mörk Borg, for example, and think: "that's gritty!". We see arts from the new D&D and think: "is that supposed to be what? San Francisco? Vila Madalena?"
@@diegoborges3716but thats really only for new players. A creative DM can easily change the style and mood of any system if their players can accept it. Most of the mood really comes from the individuals imagination and what words the DM uses.

The obsession millennial bourgeois leftist unmarried women have with inventing imaginary black demographics that they can go all Khaleesi over is a very real phenomenon, that's destroying our entire civilization.
This part of RUclips will complain about gaming becoming too political when they're the ones turning these internet hobby spaces into a maelstrom of politicized drama channels. Not once have a heard it brought up is that maybe the issue is more of an annoying aesthetic shift than a political/philosophical one. I personally think that long story short: the new art style just sucks and the influence of things like WOW and LoL are having a detrimental effect to realism in fantasy art.
That being said, the market for geek culture has also become more diverse. Catan is like the new Monopoly, rappers flex MTG cards, and female Tinder bios are filled with D&D under listed interests. Stores which sell 40K are also selling plushies and earrings. These are new developments. Money talks and marketing teams likely see a need to reflect the larger mass market in the same way they do for insurance ads. They see the success of League and WoW, and the relatively lighthearted fairy tale aesthetic of Critical Role's interpretation of D&D. They are corporate businessmen. I'll admit there's nuance here, but it's insane to deny that D&D has come an extraordinarily long way from Gary's basement- and a lot of that distance was covered just in this past decade.
However along with grifting for views these channels will also delete my comments when you try to have a discussion in the comments section instead of participating in their echo chamber. Happens over and over again. SAD!
