This deal is insanely good for the Cubs. I'm presuming he has bonuses tied to starts and IP. Maybe a bonus for every start after 25 and bonuses for IP after 150. This deal is very much like I'd offer Bellinger. My base would be 7Y189M with a vesting clause set at 500PA. For every time during the first 7 years he achieved 500PA, it would add a player option with a base salary of 16M. The 2nd clause would then go into effect set at the same 500PA. For each season after the vesting options start that he achieves the same 500PA, the base salary for each already earned vesting year. Each vesting year would have 7 years where the increase could be earned giving each year a potential value of 23M. Give Bellinger opt outs at years 1 and 4. Set the pay structure at 29/29/29/27/25/25/25. This would let him hit the market after only 1 more year or wait 4 years getting 114M and leaving 75 or more on the table. Worst case scenario it's Heyward all over again but you have to take chances or simply pray the prospects work out. For him to get the full 12 years he has to have at least 5 in the first 7 getting 500PA which he should only get if he's healthy and productive. If he opts out after year 1 he gives the Cubs 27M in CBT space while PCA should be ready to take over CF and the 1B market will have a few decent choices. Plus the Cubs could look at adding Soto to replace Bellinger in the line up and let Mervis take 1B from there.
@@SetupManCubs This is a freaking amazing deal for the Cubs! The CBT commitment is no more than 2 years at about 13.5M per with a long of it being 5 years with an AAV of 16M. I'm guessing if the option is picked up the 27M is added and the AAV re-figured from there. If I'm correct, then if the option was picked up after year 2, the remaining AAV would be just under 18M. And if picked up after year 3, just over 20M. Jed is a genius.
I’m trying to figure out where Smyly fits on this team. Maybe innings eater out of the bullpen when needed, or lefty specialist for mid-leverage situations… nothing exciting, but maybe he will surprise us
Should the Cubs sign Cody Bellinger next? I examine that on this video: ruclips.net/video/1mtY1zqREpE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
It's 15mil. They paid Tailion 17mil per last year. This guy has 5 + pitches. Most Top prospects 2, Most All Stars 3. He has 5. This deal is very nice
2 are plus pitches (fastball and sweeper), one has the chance to develop nicely (splitter) and the other 2 (cutter/curve) seem to be for effect

@@michaelplowman8674 let’s see a few more of these genius moves before Spring Training! 🙌🏻
geez this deal is a steal. nicely done Cubs. He alone is not enough.
Thanks for the Tailion stat 💯 Smyly tho is a low 3era SP the 1st half every year. 🤷🏻💯 More worried about both their stuff tho.

Maybe the Cubs bring back Alfonso Soriano to help the Suzuki and Imanaga transition? I think he learned to speak Japanese while playing in Japan.
That would be pretty bad ass!
Patrick Mooney reported on the terms shortly after I released this: theathletic.com/5194035/2024/01/10/cubs-shota-imanaga-contract/
