AND literally, no one will feel any benefit of the interest rates coming down. If you got your fixed rate last week - you are on that for another 2 or 5 years. If you get it next month well you are moving off 1% to 5% - just cost ist now 6% does NOT make you happy
I think really the major issues that really matter to people is affordable housing, finding a dentist, energy costs they can afford and having something left after all their bills are paid!
Sad that neither the Tories or Labour have no plans to address any of those things. Depressing.

It may on paper be the economy is getting better. But that is not what people see Andrew, they see the fact there are hardly any dentists, that ambulances either don't arrive or are hours late. That the roads are full of holes, that they cannot see a Doctor. This is all very relevant to Sunak who is a numbers man and seems not to have a clue about anything else. But they have governed by soundbite for 14 yrs and people have had enough. If the economy improves by October/November good but too late thankfully for the Tories.

The problem comes from how you measure the strength of the economy. Selective statistical choices and cherry picking the metrics that reinforce the narrative you want to spin can make anything look good.
They look at overall productivity or the average salary or some other aggregated metric but ignore inequality - things will look good.
Say that inflation has halved even though it's still far too high - makes things sound good.
£900 more in your pocket thanks to tax cuts? Fine if you ignore the increased costs from higher interest rates and higher prices.
Look at the positive-sounding things but ignore the overall big picture that shows the reality for a lot of people.
Or to quote Homer Simpson - "you can prove anything with statistics", whether it's actually true or not.
"£900 quid better off..." - Except if you have a mortgage you're about £1000 worse off. I know people of a certain vintage are desperate to pretend the Tories aren't F*cking mental but it's time to stop acting like there's factions in the party. Just accept it's a party of chancers all in it for themselves.
What good is it to have a bit more money when the NHS is decimated? Private is only an option to people in the upper third income wise.
The interest rates were going to increase anyway. It just happened more quickly due to Truss. They should've been increased while BJ was in power IMO as you could see that inflation was increasing.
Or even bigger rises in Council tax.

There’s not enough food in the supermarkets, no one can afford anything, the NHS is quietly being sold off, schools are crumbling, there’s no dentists, prisons are falling apart, there are no police, we’ve become more racist, there are no new houses, utility bills are sky high, trains don’t work, we are isolated internationally… yeah why on earth isn’t Rishi getting credit for all that?

None of these commentators can get a grip on the scale of the problem, they all grew up when £60 million was a lot of money and £1 billion an unimaginable amount. So they hear £60 million invested and they give CREDIT, then Sunak might as well throw hot pennies on the floor for us to scrabble for like the rich used to in the 1850's
And how on earth is Marr able to claim that better is just on the horizon?

@@psyick9543The UK has entered a phase called "sigmoidal collapse" its the opposite of a S curve of technology adoption where its super expensive at first but gets super cheap and everyone buys one until sales level off cos everyone has one.
This is like the falling off the top on a rollercoaster we are in that bit as you go over the top, the plunge down near vertical is yet to come, but it will and it will last 8 to 15 years.

Horrifically and astoundingly awful at politics.
What he did to HS2 (of his own bat, without consulting NR or HS2 Ltd or any experts) was unforgivable - cancelling the relatively cheap phase 2A left it costing a fortune and making the situation for rail freight worse than it is now, by it's rejoining the West Coast main Line at its most congested point! Just where it goes for 4 track to 2 track and there are 3 major flat junctions, all of which the few extra miles of phase 2A to Crewe would bypass.
He did that in a vain attempt to garner votes (according to polls) for his failing and walking-dead administration.
And then there's the ludicrous Rwanda proposals which doesn't stack up in any way which ever way you look at it.

They probably had a buyer for all this seized property, at knocked down prices.

The real issue is the way the immigrants look at it. at the moment they think that once they get to England then the government will give them a house and 30k per year, right or wrong if that’s the perception then nothing you say will make a difference to them. If they think they wont get to live in the uk and be given lots of free money and they’ll go to an African country they wont come. That is the point. Like it or loath it something needs to be done as the uk cannot continue to exist with this level of immigration, the social cohesion will break down and we will end up with extremists and racists taking hold in the ordinary population. The UK has been a welcoming country but that’s only because it can afford to be, if the general population feel like second class citizens in their own country they will turn.
By any economic measure they should have cancelled the whole thing. Without links to Manchester and Leeds the economic case falls apart.
Weak leadership is weak leadership. Sunak is not a leader.

225 million to top up Ukrainian shells but 60m on apprenticeships how does this make sense?
Firstly - Mid and Large companies pay apprenticeships levy on their total payroll of 0.5%. That is bound to be in billions.
Secondly - until very recently, the school leavers were seemlesly integrated to the workforce, and now everybody expects to be paid to hire young workers??? This is a grift opportunity for government cronies, and who is getting all that money?

They call it a 'dead cat bounce'. The Rwanda policy is modelled on Australia's disgusting abuse of refugees and as an Australian I feel profound shame that my country has shown a path to the gutter for others to follow; trashing human rights and international law. Imagine if you gave those refugees $230,000 pounds instead? The BRITISH economy would get the benefit of that money being spent locally, as well as another loyal, hard working citizen. Sunak is not good at politics, and the Conservatives are dreadful at economics and ethics. Good leadership takes courage and a sound moral compass and no one with either could remain a Tory.
Inflation is not falling. The rate of inflation is slowing. Quite different. Inflation is still climbing.
Inflation is not climbing it's falling. This doesn't mean prices are falling, they are rising but less quickly.
Yup, historically, the consensus was that the inflation was bad for the society, and the target for central banks was defined as *not more* than 2%.
In 2010's they shifted the target into *exactly 2%*, and the new narrative defined inflation as necessary stimulatant of economic growth.
Inflation is one of the most misunderstood and manipulated indicators.
Well said. And the usual April fools joke has landed on my carpet; the Council Tax demand featuring legalized theft in the form of the precept. The mayor of London has added what he wants and does to fund so called free school meals, a fare freeze and the removal of peak fares on Friday.
£2,500 does not represent good value.

The positive points you highlight ignore:
crumbling NHS
crumbling schools
eye-watering high taxation (the so-called 'tax cuts' are generally divided between those which benefit people who were already comfortable and those for the working classes which are cancelled out by other stealth taxes)
the vast increase in actual poverty, together with the poverty gap getting ever wider
the ongoing foot-shooting exercise named Brexit (responsible for the loss of many rights and freedoms for all UK citizens in addition the to the vast economic damage it caused)
the failure to recoup money from those who stole from taxpayers during Covid
the failure to maintain the banking regulations introduced after the last global banking crisis
white elephants, such as the xenophobic Rwanda scheme and 'asylum sites' which cost even more than using hotels for the same purpose
I'm not paid to list all of your omissions so i'll leave it there.
The UK is 'bouncing back' with all of the dynamic agility of a brick coated in lead.

Every European and general election for the past 15 years has strongly confirmed that the majority of people wanted out of the EU. The 2017 and 2019 general elections even offered voters the opportunity to back track on Brexit. Yet, the pro-Brexit parties won, especially in 2019. Even the EU-loving Liberal Democrats had to reverse their vow to rejoin the EU.
I don't think Brexit was a Tory or even a UKIP thing - it was a majority-of-the-British-people-wanting-it-to-happen thing.
The trouble with postponing the election until the Autumn is that energy price increases after a short relief will start climbing again, council tax increases, mortgage costs, food costs and stagnating wages will be really biting by then. Oh and the Rwanda experiment cost will be nudging £1 billion for marginal effect.
Forget Sunak. Forget the Tories. The entire system needs bringing down.

Many of us feel that the ' first past the post ' type of Democracy, which we have ' enjoyed ' for Centuries, has brought our Country to this difficult position... Not sure if the problem is... We keep on selecting candidates that prove to be ' Not fit for purpose '... Maybe, when people apply to go on the ballot forms ( for every Constituency ) they must sit some kind of ' O ' level test paper, to see if those applicants ARE capable of doing the job... It is like someone applying for the job of England manager, he gets the job, and soon after, it becomes clear that he has NO experience, or any ability, to do the job... Such things happen in Industry, and the failures soon get ' the big elbow ! ' .... So, to answer your good question :- I suggest a type of ' Vetting ' process, to ensure that, whoever gets chosen as an MP, is likely to be able to do a professional job for their constituents.... And as for the Cabinet positions.... That is another story !!!!

The government has had nothing to do with inflation falling. That was done by the Bank of England.
As for us bouncing back? I follow economics and there is little sign of that, other than inflation falling.
Just take a look at the FTSE 100. Its dragging itself along the bottom, still.
Additionally by Tory economic logic those NI reductions are potentially inflationary.

If you take a strong Index fund like Black Rock's iShares FTSE 100 it has had a Yield of 5.6% over the last year. That is about the same as the overnight money market rate. And an Index fund cherry picks the best. Compare with IWFQ a world fund - Currently has a yield of 30% this year.

It wasn't the BoE either. We had elevated inflation due to profiteering from Covid. That has come to an end, hence inflation is falling. Apart from Johnson and co giving contracts to their associates, govt and the BoE have had almost no influence on Covid inflation.
Rishi Sunak bad at politics and running the country , for anyone who's not loaded anyway.
The fact that people like Andrew Marr do not have a basic grasp of economics or what inflation means is a reflection of British journalism. For people to have more money in their pockets they would need supra-inflationary pay rises. Given that wages have been stagnant for a decade, the average Brit does not have more money in their pocket.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Andrew Marr understands the simple concept of inflation funnily enough. He's talking about how the PR message of £900 better off thanks to tax cuts hasn't landed. He's saying that's partly happened because of poor messaging from the Tories. I'd hazard a guess Andrew Marr might know his stuff after decades of political commentary...

It's really so simple, it makes no difference who is the 'leader' of the Conservative party, because it is the Conservative party itself that is the problem. When you have spent 14 years bringing the country to it's knees why on earth is anybody going to vote for you, no matter what you say, they have experienced your actions and they haven't been pleasant experiences for the majority of people.
Tory apologist, Mr Marr, is missing the point by bleating on about the so called 'good things' he claims Sunak has done, when it's all there for everyone to see the appalling mess the Tories have made of the country. They are a greedy, callous bunch of incompetent and corrupt money gluttons only driven by self interest. The sooner they are gone the sooner the country can start to heal.
Maybe he will leave a note on the table which says... " Dear new PM... I'm sorry, but there's nothing left ! "

You are deluded. The government is actually "doing" very little. You are simply repeating their announcements, their assertions, their claims, which will amount to minuscule actual delivery of anything substantial.
Whenever Sunak talks about any expenditure, it is invariably in the present continuous tense - e.g. we are spending n millions on x - when in fact it is a proposal/aspiration to spend some amount in the unspecified future, with no detail about whether it is evenly spread over time, frontloaded or backloaded.
This channel should be far more diligent on obtaining the detail and the facts than merely being a government mouthpiece.

We do not feel better off. Inflation falling STILL means prices are still RISING.

The only major 'bouncing back' has nothing to do with the government.
The Bank of England has imposed much higher interest rates. This has helped bring inflation down. It inevitably does.
The inflation rate is still well above the average over the last decade, so sorry if we're not celebrating.
All small initiatives that help the country are welcome, but fourteen years has brought us to our knees.

It’s bouncing back from their errors in the first place. Brexit damage, Covud waste and utterly insane policies where a lettuce would have been a better option. So bouncing back from horrendous positions isn’t much of a mark of positivity.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Rishi has no gut instinct. People laud him as Chancellor and bringing in the furlough scheme but this was at the very last minute with multiple changes and extensions agreed days before the scheme was due to end. He is a spreadsheet man not a politician.
Interest rates high, mortgage rates going way up on renewals, rents going way up, inflation seems higher than headline rate, RPI higher than the headline CPI, 9 million economically inactive with millions sick waiting for treatments, high streets closing, pubs, restaurants and shops closing, roads potholed, millions of kids hungry, tonnes of consumer debt out there.
Doesn’t this show how pathetic this electorate is if many think Farage would be a good leader!! God help us, the minority
*LITERALLY NO ONE* will feel any benefit of the interest rates coming down. If you got your fixed rate last week - you are on that for another 2 or 5 years. If you get it next month well you are moving off 1% to 5% - just cost its now 6% does NOT make you happy
A slow down in the rate of inflation in no way puts money back into people's pockets.

When the electioneering knock on the door comes, I will ask for the top 5 achievements of the last 14 years.
When Brexit is not mentioned I will ask them if they voted leave and how well it has worked out.
I almost feel sorry for the poor sods on the trudge round the neighbourhood.

After 14 years of Tory rule I cannot recall the UK being in worse shape.
I am 58 and have lived through the three day week in the 1970s, the misery of early 1980s and the recession of the early 1990s.
The new century was supposed to bring hope and yet since 2008 and the great recession we have headed ever further into an abyss.
So many things in the UK are barely fit for purpose.
Some are barely believable. Consider our new blue (Brexit) passports, designed en France and printed in Poland.
The government deprived De la rue of the contract and presumably British jobs too. You cannot make this rubbish up.
Housing and rents are in an appalling state and really reflect a policy introduced by Thatcher in the 80s and resurrected by Cameron in 2010, namely the right-to-buy, that has spectacularly failed but is now so entrenched our economy that it will take a lot to rid us of its poison.
Our government, Labour or Conservative, believe they can tinker us out of this mess but the patient requires major surgery. Both appear socialist; socializing costs and poverty too.
Brexit is the real cherry upon the icing on the cake.
The Conservatives have no sense of what is best for the country; it is all about the party and self aggrandizement.
Currently we have a nuclear deterrent that does not work for which we have paid huge sums to the Americans.
We need to hand it back and recover what funds we might and spend it on a conventional army, airforce and navy and whatever else like the NHS.
We cannot go on like this, something fundamental needs to change.

Bouncing back from austerity isn't that easy. All the services that are gone are still gone, all the debt accumulated is still accumulated, what you cant afford you still cant afford and what you don't have you still don't have! If you feel as though you've been shafted that's because you've been shafted. The man in charge is minted but feels your pain. He's laser focused delivering his plan. For now!!!

Rishi Sunak has not served his apprenticship as a politician.
He hasn't served as a local councillor, he hasn't had to fight his way through a couple of hopeless constituency elections before getting a chance at a winning seat.
He hasn't been honed and harden in the fire of politics and thus he doesn't understand the political system, the Tory system and hasn't built the relationships required to be a successful political leader.

I think after Boris Johnson it will take a lot for the public to believe anything a Tory leader says even when they are telling the truth.
Even if the planes fly to Rwanda before the election, remember that they won't be coming back empty. The agreement is to take a Rwandan refugee in return for every person they take from the UK.
